Playstation Arc, Playstation GEM? Who knows what exactly the final version of the PS3 motion controller will be called but Disney are swaying towards the latter. At DICE they called PS3's motion controller GEM.

<blockquote>
After mentioning the iPad and iPhone, Wadsworth also talked about upcoming opportunities with Microsoft's Project Natal and, in perhaps a slip of the tongue, Sony's Gem. Sony's motion-control peripheral has been called Arc and Gem in the past few months, and Wadsworth's comment at least adds some more confusion about its name into the mix.

Wadswroth also talked about making a media group like DMG successful in the modern world of media consumption. While he agreed that the traditional model of supply and demand is still the obvious basis for business, he also talked about flipping the formula and letting demand drive supply for approaching how they create media like games.</blockquote>

Sony continues to trash talk the competition and this time it is the turn of the Wii. Dyer of Siny noted that there is a distinct lack of innovative new IP coming out on the Wii and the publisher backlash is benefiting the PS3.

<blockquote>Dyer continued, "And I don't even have to fight for their hearts and minds; I just show them the TRST data with regards to how many top 10 titles are third-party titles on the Wii, or how many top 10 titles are third-party titles on the DS. Not many. It's not a hard story to sell, and they get that. Unless they've got a particular franchise that's worked well on the Wii, you don't see a lot of innovative new IP coming out on that platform.†</blockquote>

According to reports, An Australian distributor has been ordered to pay Nintendo just over half a million dollars in damages due to it selling the R4 cartridge for DS.

<blockquote>An Australian distributor has been ordered to pay Nintendo over half a million dollars for selling video game piracy tool, the R4 mod chip.

The Federal Court ordered that RSJ IT Solutions cease to sell the chip through its gadgetgear.com.au site and any other sites it controlled, as well as paying Nintendo $520,000 in damages.

The chip allows users to circumvent the technology protection measures Nintendo has built into its DS handheld consoles, enabling illegally pirated games to be downloaded online.

Nintendo brought the claim against the gadget accessory distributor and two affiliated respondents Patrick Li and James Li.</blockquote>

Sony has revealed that it fully believes console exclusivity will become a thing of the past. However, for third party games specifically, Sony sees themselves being able to offer the consumer a lot more than say the Xbox 360 versions due to the joys of things like Blu-ray. Here is the main part of what was told to <A href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/ps3-better-serves-publishers-than-360-says-sony/2/" target="_Blank">IndustryGamers.com</a>:

<em>“I point to a couple big examples. One is Batman: Arkham Asylum, with what the guys at Eidos and Rocksteady did, and I point to Madden and the unique campaign EA put behind it with us, showing promotions that were very PS3 focused. And that really drove sales," he explained. "Look, we're not going to get the exclusive games. The Mass Effects, Gears of Wars and Left 4 Deads aren't going to happen nearly as often. But we have our own first-party development and exclusives like Final Fantasy XIV and Agent. Exclusives just aren't as...

Some analysts have sent out a warning that Nintendo need to slash the price of the Wii to $150. This is due to the fact that competition is going to severely increase with the imminent arrival of the likes of Project Natal and Arc.

<blockquote>We believe Nintendo needs to cut the price of their console from $200 to $150 immediately, as they should establish as meaningful of an installed base as possible before the Natal and Arc are introduced. We believe they also need to generate strong hardware sales momentum into their competitors release or face the draconian consumer perception of the Wii having a dramatically reduced entertainment value proposition over a faded technology innovation; Rock Band anyone?"</blockquote>

The Official Playstation Magazine has an interesting little rumor. The rumor is that cross game chat will be available to PAID PSN subscribers only. We hope this is not the case and it is just a poor rumor.

<blockquote>
In the latest issue of PTOM, there’s a thread about PlayStation 3’s “Next Techâ€, and in it, slew of details were divulged concerning PSN.

After talking about the possible 3D offerings in 2010, the mag delves into cross-game chat.

“Aside from the 3D goodness, cross-game party chat is the obvious “next big feature,†even though it might be restricted to paid [PSN] subscribers.â€

Earlier in the same thread speaking about motion controls, the writer said this:

“Sony’s current service is one of the PS3’s best features, so we’d begrudgingly welcome a revamped PSN with extra subscriber functionality, like cross-game-chat and exclusive PSN downloads.â€</blockquote>

Sony has claimed that publishers have defected to the PS3 and essentially the tide has turned in their favor. They say that all the major publishers are now telling them that the PS3 platform is where huge year on year growth is happening including EA and Activision.

<blockquote>Ahead of a year that Sony clearly believes will cement the PS3’s market position ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, the platform holder has claimed that attitudes in the publishing community have changed and that PS3 is now seen as the safe bet for further development.

“The $299 price point has resonated and it has a huge impact when you're sold out in so many locations, but the better news is that it's translating into software sales,†SCEA’s senior VP of publisher relations Rob Dyer told IndustryGamers.

“When I walk into an EA, they're telling me that for Madden, the one platform they're seeing year-on-year growth is the PS3, or when I walk into Activision and they tell me the same thing...

Sony is testing out a new piracy system with the new SOCOM game on PSP. Essentially, if you want to go online with the game, you have to be validated before doing so. Therefore pirated copies of the game will not be able to go online without the special voucher code.

<blockquote>Any hopes today marks the beginning of the end of the rampant piracy seen on its PSP platform. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3, released today, is Sony's first test at discouraging pirates from downloading PSP software.

Those who purchase SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 are now required to register the title through PlayStation Network before given access to online gameplay. UMD copies of the game will come with a voucher code that must be redeemed online, while digital copies will automatically register in the background. Those who buy a used copy of the UMD can purchase a PSN entitlement voucher for $20 to play online.

Today Sony has confirmed that it has stopped production of OLED technology in Japan. The main reason this move was made is due to sluggish demand but apparently it plans to keep selling the TVs in foreign markets.

<blockquote>Sony said it had stopped production of ultra-thin TVs using organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology for Japan, just a little over 2 years since it launched its first set. It plans to keep selling the TVs in overseas markets, a spokesman said.

OLED displays use organic, or carbon-containing compounds that emit light when electricity is applied. They produce crisp images and do not need backlighting, making them slimmer and more energy-efficient than LCDs, the most popular type of flat TV.</blockquote>

A journalist has got his hands on the final code for Final Fantasy XIII. And after playing the PS3 version, he reports back that the Xbox 360 version is worse. The CG is extremely compressed, objects are less detailed, character clothing doesn't have the final details amongst more 'issues'.

<blockquote>The final retail Xbox 360 code is in the door and comes off comparatively the poorer...

Final retail code has just arrived in the building for the Xbox 'cut' of Final Fantasy XIII and as many suspected, it is exactly that. A cut.

Having just finished the game in just under sixty hours on PS3 puts us in prime position to note the differences in visual quality.

“Sacrifices have clearly been madeâ€

So far we have noted:

* While facial detail appears largely unchanged, the characters' clothes appear at first glance to be lacking finer details, with notably lower resolution textures.
* Incidental environmental objects and enemies appear less detailed, both in texture...

A recent official blog posting reveals that Capcom really wants to see Street Fighter IV gracing the PSP. As a PSP owner, would you be happy to see this title on there?

<blockquote>Capcom's project manager Natsuki Shiozawa wrote on her Japanese blog that she wants Street Fighter IV to appear on the PSP. Apparently, her colleagues at the company all have the same dream.

Would you want to see Street Fighter IV on a PSP? It wouldn't be the first time a fighting game has been downsized for the handheld, with BlazBlue and Tekken 6 being two recent examples. You can read the blog entry here, where Shiozawa-san tackles a gauntlet of fan questions and answers them most honourably.</blockquote>
