According to website "Ripten", an email from Nintendo invited them to a special Wii U preview event in New York City. Apparently, the invite was sent to the author because "He is a Nintendo Club member".
This is the e-mail he received:

Also, it looks like a Nintendo rep confirmed that Nintendo does plan to do a Wii U tour but he said it was going to be "a media only affair".
In an interview with NOA's Charlie Scibetta at this year E3, he admitted it would prove difficult for the company to make people “understand” the Wii U.
“It can appeal to people all ranges in terms of their gaming ability but it’s hard to understand the system until you get your hands on it.”
“A big part of our strategy has been and will continue to be trial, getting it in as many people’s hands as possible.” |
So, it's probably real and it could be a pretty good idea making the Wii U accessible to the public before its launch.
Let's hope this happens in many other cities around the world too!
