Apple has confirmed that they will hold an special event to introduce the new iPhone to the world.

Apple has reportedly being sending invitation to the media to attend to an special event on September 12th to presumably present the new iPhone and maybe more things.
According to TheLoop:
Apple on Tuesday sent out invites for an upcoming event happening in San Francisco on September 12, 2012. The invitation I received says the event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts at 10:00 am.
It is widely expected that Apple will announce its next generation iPhone at the event.

If you pay attention to the projected shadow of the "12" it is clearly a shape of a "5" suggesting that the new iPhone could be named finally, iPhone 5.
