PLEASE HELP! MANY PEOPLE ARE LOOKING TO MAKE PURCHASES WITH THIS INFORMATION! IF YOU FIND INFORMATION, LINK TO THE SOURCE AND POST IT!
I've been thinking that the easiest way to tell from the shipping box / PSP itself what firmware is installed would be from the serial number of the PSP.
There seems to be 2 parts to serials, the P-number and the S-number:
The P number seems to (possibly) be regional and stays the same across a batch of consoles. The S-number is the serial number as shown inside the battery compartment.
I'm thinking maybe we could build a list of serial numbers against Original Firmware version? Unless there's already one out there somewhere? So to get things moving here's some real samples that have been through my hands, the final two digits and letter obscured for anonymity...
These are all UK/Eire spec European consoles
PSP-2003PB

As you can see, for this region of consoles (other regions might have different blocks of serial numbers reserved) if your serial number is 06643XX or below you should be good to flash :thumbs:
If your serial is 07583XX or higher then :mad: sorry!
Hope this helps - any other contributions would help narrow it down, especially for other regions of the world.
Now let’s continue with other thing. What about a quick compatibility list?
1. TA-079 v1 -> Can be cfw’d -> Can create pandora
2. TA-079 v2 -> Can be cfw’d -> Can create pandora
3. TA-079 v3 -> Can be cfw’d -> Can create pandora
4. TA-081 -> Can be cfw’d -> Can create pandora
5. TA-082 -> Can be cfw’d -> Can create pandora
6. TA-086 -> Can be cfw’d -> Can create pandora
7. TA-085 v1 -> Can be cfw’d -> Can create pandora
8. TA-085 v2 -> Can be cfw’d -> Can NOT create pandora
9. TA-088 v1 -> Can be cfw’d -> Can NOT create pandora
10. TA-088 v2 -> Can be cfw’d -> Can NOT create pandora
11. TA-088 v3 -> Can NOT be cfw’d -> Can NOT create pandora
12. TA-090 v1 -> Can NOT be cfw’d -> Can NOT create pandora
13. TA-090 v2 -> Can NOT be cfw’d -> Can NOT create pandora
And, let’s make a last one! What about a quick boxcode list for the ofw that are inside? For the Phat models (01g):
1. A = 1.50
2. B = 1.51
3. C = 1.52
4. D = 1.52
5. E = 1.52
6. F = 2.00

14. N = 3.03
15. O = 3.10
16. P = 3.11
17. Q = 3.30
18. R = 3.40
19. S = 3.50
20. T = 3.51
21. U = 3.52
Now for the Slim & Lite (02g);

9. H = 3.95 / 4.01
10. I = 4.01
11. J = 4.05
And for the 3k models (03g);
1. (No letter) = 4.20
2. A = 4.20/4.21
3. B = ??
4. C = 5.02
5. D = ??
6. E = ??

Any store would be fine, but your best bet for getting a hackable system would be either the God of War or Daxter Limited Edition pack.

No, they managed to get it into service mode, but no pre-IPL has managed to surface, so no software can be run yet.

I just bought a PSP 2000 series, and i'm trying to figure out what kind of motherboard i have. If its the one that can't be hacked, i will be extremely disappointed :mad:
All the information i've read here doesnt seem to apply to mine...
Here's what it says on the box:
PSP-2001PB / 98510
Thats it. Thats all it says. other than the serial number starting with an "AB". I checked in the UMD slot and i cant see any numbers listed there either...
Does anybody know what kind i have? Or can someone please help me figure it out?

Limited Editions and the new Piano Black boxes do not have codes. Daxter is able to be moded (as that is what I purchased).

Yes, PSP-1000 model batteries work in both, but PSP-2000 batteries do not work in PSP-1000 units.

EDIT: Well, i just got my Pandora battery, and i can't get it to boot off my Magic MS. All i get is a solid green power light, and nothing comes on the screen. Am i doing something wrong? Or does this prove that this psp is unhackable? :(
Oh, and to answer the previous question posted here, mine was bought from Bestbuy just two weeks ago, and apparently it's no good. I wouldn't waste your money on it :o

TA-88v3 will use the battery, only the PSP-300X models do not allow the PSP to enter service mode. The problem with the TA-88v3 is just the lack of an IPL.

You don't have to worry about bricking it, but I'm afraid you most likely have the new motherboard if the original firmware was 4.01...

My brother in law has just got 2 PSP's for his boys and asked me to sort them out.
1 is 2003 PB with a G on the pack and running 3.95 OFW
The other is 2003 IS with F on the pack and running 3.90 OFW
They will both accept my Pandora battery and have the Green light on with a Black screen without the MMS (which I take as entering service mode), but if I try it with my MMS they both switch off. I have tried putting the Battery in both before and after the MMS but neither way works.
The MMS is loaded with DC6 and worked the last time I used it in the summer, since then it's been kept safe in a case.
Any help would be much appreciated. Hopefully I'm missing a step out but I don't think I am.

Where did you find it? I am thinking about returning my and search for an old one. Although I still didn't have a change to get a pandora to make sure mine has a 88v3.. I only have this week to return it and have 80% of my money back.

Just purchased a PSP-2003PB Letter code: G it has firmware 3.95 on it. It was purchased from Game Focus on Goodge St, London. The last new 2000 they had.
I have not tried to load it up with custom firmware yet, but I'll post an update when I have done it. Hopefully it wont be the dreaded TA-88v3, all indications at the moment point to it not being one.
Update...
Hmmm, after all it does seem to be an TA-88v3, when I boot using the pandora battery and memory stick all I get is a black screen with no memory stick access when I press x. (I tested the memory stick and battery on my old phat and it goes into the recovery menu).
Update 2...
Worked with DC8, also found out that certain memory sticks don't work. I tried with a 64MB Sony; did not work 256MB Sandisk; did not work, finally tried my own 4GB Sony Stick and no problems there.

If it has 3.95 it's not a TA-88v3. Make sure you try DC8 before you call it quits.

Anyway, I just bought a "used" psp from Gamestop in New Jersey, got it home, and the system info says its a 3.80 firmware. its a slim silver. I ordered the slim pandora and magic memory stick. Am I set?
Yeah, you're good :)!

Hi there... bad for us. I still couldn't verify if mine was really one of the bad one or not, because I was not able to have a pandora batery till today. Since my deadline to return it to the store was today, I decided to return it.
So they will refund me all I paid (except taxed I guess).
There is no way to know when it will be fixed... maybe one week, maybe one month, maybe six, maybe never..
Hi i just go my psp for xmas i have a
2003 pb

ofw: 4.01
From what ive read it looks like mine aint going to work please could some one let me know thanks.
Also if its not going to work when will they bring out a fix for it?

Hi :)
I'm new to this Forum and a new PSP user. About 3wks ago I bought a psp 2000 slim Ice Silver. On the box it says,
PSP-2003 IS
220-240V
G
Unfortunately I didn't know the importance of OFW version at the time, so I'm not sure what version of OFW my PSP had. I think it was 3.95 but really not sure, since then I upgraded to 5.02 so I cannot check.
I was considering buying a Pandora battery and MMC but first I would like to be sure that my PSP is hackable. Could someone help me out with this?
Happy New Year to everyone
Thanks for your help
P.S Under the battery there is a Date Code 8B. Don't know if this helps.
Thanks

i work in a game store and sadly all the psps in my store are all G's and i wouldnt be able to go about opening them all to see if any are running 4.05 or not.
But i did notice that on the barcodes some of the boxes have a white dot where as some other ones had a black dot, could this be the marker of the v3 modo ?
Oh yea the markings arent there to say white psp or black psp, the ones we have are all black. These are UK models by the way.
So if you ppl who have the 4.05 could you see if you all have the same colour dot on your barcode ?
EDIT
sorry by 4.05 i mean 4.01

Great forum and resource on this forum!!
I have a quick question, in the very first post it talks about:
"Limited Edition & New Boxstyle:"
Is this referring to the one that does NOT have the clear front that you can see the PSP? Where there's a picture of the PSP instead of a clear front/window that you can see the ACTUAL PSP?
And that the one that is see through with a clear front to see the ACTUAL PSP you're buying is the: "PSP-2000 Original Boxstyle Box" ?
I wanted to verify because I think I found the older style box, but it's the Piano Black core pack. However on the side bottom of the side I believe it says "PSP-2001PB" Or something like that on the side.
Please let me know if I can follow this:
PSP-2000 Original Boxstyle Box Codes (Thanks to Alek @ Dark-AleX.org):
(No Letter) = 3.60
A = 3.71
B = UNKNOWN
C = 3.72
D = UNKNOWN
E = 3.80
F = 3.90
G = 3.95 / 4.01 (TA-88v2 / TA-88v3)
A PSP with G and the 4.01 firmware is most likely a TA-88v3 motherboard, so it is advised that you stay away from them.
For the one with the clear front. Because I've already bought 2 with OFW4.01 with the box that you can't see in. :(
Please help. Thanks!

I got mine at Super Target. They had some with the old packaging and some with the new, but I'm afraid to open it unless I know it is the old motherboard.
Also buddz, I wanted to know did you open it up yet to see which OFW and motherboard yours has? Please let me know. Thx!

The one you showed me in the PM was the Daxter pack, which is modable, but the black version in that type of case is TYPICALLY TA-88v3, which is not modable

I posted earlier about DOTs on the barcodes of the psps ive now attached an image (poor quality but you can see the dots on them). As you can no doubt see there is a larger amount of white dots to black.
http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp52/bluecathode/DSC00337.jpg
i bit the bullet today and bought one which had a white dot on it and it was a 3.95 and i was able to use pandora on it, i can only assume the black dots are the ones which pandora doesnt work on.
The reason i went for the one with the white dot was that we had an older psp traded in ( a slim one ) and the box that one came in also had a white dot, although this might not actually mean anything. But its a start ?
EDIT
ahhhhh i didnt mean for the image to be so large

Hey I'm intrigued by this white/black dot thing. What colour dots have you guys got on your boxes, and with what letter and firmware?
I have a UK Piano Black PSP sat here with a white dot on the box label:
PSP-2003PB
220-240V
F
which is obviously OK to flash custom firmware to.
I also saw a Crystal White PSP in a (UK) shop today marked as follows:
PSP-2003CW
220-240V
SS 259NP
Does anyone know what the SS 259NP means or whether this will be flashable? Has anyone seen a code like this before instead of the single letter? I didn't notice if it had a black or white dot on it.

About "dot thing": few users on our board have reported that black dot means ta-088v3, but I'm still not buying this completely and I'm waiting for more proofs from more users. If it confirms, I will post here again ;)

sorry ive been away for a while. All the boxes we have are all marked with G a minority are white dots majority are black. Also the 3000 model comes prepacked in our store with the likes of fifa, need for speed, etc. Opening the outer box to these revealed that all 12 3000 models we have are black dots on the barcode, which would defo point to the black dot meaning v3 mobo. I couldnt go opening them all and turn each one on but i believe its common knowledge that psp 3000 are v3 mobos anyway, i did it more to see what colour dots were on the boxes.
I think the dots are a clear way of finding out the mobo verson from what people have posted back.

PSP-2003PB

what about this model
PSP Slim & Lite - Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G Hunter Pack - Limited Edition (PSP-2000 Console)
any had any kind of info on it since its a Limited edition:confused:
I tried downgrading my m8s psp. He didnt buy his that far back, but he said he had 3.xx software on it.
I created a pandora and magic memory stick (despertar cementario v8). When the downgrading menu loads up (with downgrading options etc.), the buttons dont work.
Anyone else with a similar problem? Can it be the new motherboard? Please help

Hi, can someone help me pls. I want to determine wot board my psp has cuz when its in service mode it jus says ta?? the other thing is my 7 digit serial isnt in that list (mines 06749xx) and I'm so sure that mine shipped with ofw 4.01 and its a 2003 model
I think that the date code is a good indicator. 8B and below means it's hackable, 8C and above = :(

This might sound obvious, but is the power switch in the 'hold' position? The fact that you get the flashing menu up means that the PSP is hackable :D

Good point. I never checked, because the menu loads without moving the power switch.

I'm pretty sure it had 3.80 OFW on it, but now it has 5.00 M33-6

There are more ways to identify if PSP is hackable or not. See this (http://pspslimhacks.com/forum/psp-tutorials/is-this-psp-hackable!-allow-me-to-answer-that!!/?PHPSESSID=9b26b88561f8eb367116e2542ea3d01e).

Hi. I am a newbie here. I knew nothing of the various encarnations of the PSP so I went out and bought one, which ever one I got handed. Last week I bought an action replay and the battery wouldn't enable for service mode, so then I bought a service mode battery and my PSP won't even start up with that in it. I have spent £30 on bits that I cant use, because my console has a revision 8C motherboard. I wish I had read around the forums before spending my money!
I shall now lay in wait until the hackers find a way to bust the new hardware.
Cheers!

i bought the Red God of War edition psp, came with the game, the Superbad movie and a coupon for buying SF-Combat Ops from PSN. Original firmware was 3.95 now it's 5.00 M33-6. I pandorized the slim battery with my hacked phat psp because the slim's motherboard (TA-88v2) doesn't let me do that.

Hi.
Thanks for the tip however I am not prepared to buy a second, older model of PSP so I can prep the newer one from it. My issue is not creating a pandora battery. I bought a second battery from Datel (the tool battery) and with that battery inside my PSP, all I get is a little green light next to the power slider switch, and no other activity what so ever.
The 8C motherboard is configured differently to previous revisions and won't start when using a pandora battery. THAT is the information I wish I'd learned sooner, before buying a PSP

Hi all, just adding on my PSP-2001PB / 98510 was hackable. I read somewhere that if the serial number was below 2200000 number that is was still hackable. if it was over this number and the higher it goes the more likely it isnt hackable and that it has the new motherboard. My serial was lower than the Hu2200000 starting of at HUO7300xxx. So I tried the Pandora and MMS and and right off the bat no problems hacking into. So just to throw this out there, ppl with the box code PSP-2001PB/98510, that some may still work from my xp. Also if you havnt purchased i've noticed that there is the same serial number on the back of the box or on a sticker that matches up with your psp.
can anyone help me verify this with checking there psp serials and seeing where they stand.
just trying to give a little info

I'm 90% sure 3.95 was OK, it's 4.01 where you could encounter problems, a motherboard check is the definitive test. You do not want a TA-088v3.
If you're worried about this, then buy a used fat, all motherboard revisions in that range are hackable.

I am new here and I was thrilled by all the information one can get in this great site.
I would like to buy a new PSP, and I found a 2000 model PB 98510 piano black. I asked the seller about the model appears on the bar code and he said it's ab0232
so is this a hackable PSP, which can accept installing custom firmwares?
please let me know.

Not really, you can use ChickHEN followed by Custom Firmware Enabler, which is basically a RAM based custom firmware. I'm sure there are probably some compatibility issues with some homebrew or plugins but it's very close to custom firmware. If you can install it, you should install it :)

after looking thru some other sites, one issue i hear is that if you run out of battery, like completely 0, and the psp restarts(or you shut down then restart, regardless of battery) then you will have to redo the steps or basically restart chickhen?
but is chickhen really that much of a bother to restart?
assuming what you said is correct and there are issues with some homebrew, me, a layman who just wants to play games and not carry so many umds, really should not be worrying at all should i? i mean are there issues with games crashing and the like with chickhen?

If your battery dies completely or you turn your PSP off (totally, by holding the power button until it goes off) then you will have to restart chickhen, which is easy enough (Go back to the Image folder and cause the TIFF crash again), CFWEnabler actually writes some files to flash0:\\ so you would have to then restart that (But not reflash the files, if you chose to reflash the files it would simply say that you already have). Restarting it isn't a major headache either.
I wouldn't imagine either ChickHEN/CFWEnabler has big issues, and if you're simply using some emulators and playing games, i doubt you would have any problems at all, in fact for the most part it would feel to you like you where using actual custom firmware.
Tip: CFWEnabler uses ChickHEN to start... they are not the same thing.

from what i have read it really is no big deal. but people around here(where i live) DO make it a big deal.
what do i mean? the ones that use chickhen costs less than those that are actually cfw-able, which cost a lot more. when all their kids are gonna do is play games, psp games. both are actually fine. not everyone wants or needs to run linux or windows on their psps for w/e reason.
anyway, final questions, why is it said on some guides that i need to use a sony original produo2? will using a class A or different stick have a bad effect? why is it chickhen? does that stand for something?
thanks.

No one runs Windows/Linux on their PSP, custom firmware PSP's are just more stable and you can do more without worrying about a brick. If all you want to do is play games, you won't notice a difference.
It says use a produo2 official because the TIFF exploit is HIGHLY unstable,what i mean by that is, sometimes it works other times it doesn't work, and it is completely random (I won't explain why here, if your interested head over to SilverSpring's Blog post on the topic: http://my.malloc.us/silverspring/2009/07/why-eggsploit-is-random/ ). No damaging effects can come of attempting to use the exploit with any memory stick, it will either work, or just crash your PSP (Requiring you to simply turn it back on again...), they suggest using a produo2 official simply to try and keep as many variables as close to standard as possible, thus giving you a higher chance of the exploit working first try.
It's called ChickHEN because it was released around Easter time (Easter... Egg.. Eggsploit.. Chicken.. just a play on words) and HEN because it's a Homebrew ENabler.

If you have a motherboard less that a TA-088v3 or TA-090v2, and if your firmware is 5.03 official or less you can use the LibTiff exploit homebrew enabler (ChickHEN) and Hellcat's recovery flasher to install custom firmware. Doesn't require a pandora battery.

It works like that because the exploit only affects the RAM of the psp thats why when you turn it off it will be gone. But do you know how much of ram it occupies?

I don't think it "occupies" ram in the sense of a piece of code sitting in ram, i think it simply modifies existing code already loaded into memory to relax encryption/signature checking procedures, it may make several modifications in various areas/threads, and it may well insert it's own code. I don't think many people know the ins-and-outs of this HEN, except Davee, those that helped him and those that reverse engineered his code in order to create CFWEnabler.
I'm aware of how the exploit works, but the best answer seemed to be "That's just how it works" given the audience.

No, because Chickhen writes to ram, and CFWEnabler writes to NAND only upon installation, no damage can occur outside normal usage (Or if you're dumb and flash stuff to flash0 that you shouldn't).
There is inherent damage risks writing to flash and to ram, but no more than normal usage...

The PSP came with OFW 3.95 though.
This version is not in your list, so can you add it? I really thought that mine is a TA-088v2 like the blue Madden PSP one.

I just bought a PSP Slim ceramic white, here are the specs:
PSP-2004CW
Regional ID = ???(Europe)
Box Letter = G
Date Code = 8C
8 digit P-number = 27401822-8
7 digit serial = (HC)61xxxxx
OFW = 4.01
The box has a black dot!
Pandora battery didn't worked, so i tested it with Dark Alex's tool to identify a TA-088v3 motherboard ;)
And as i suspected it is a TA-088v3, so no cfw install or downgrade/pandora possible.
But you can run cfw from ms using HEN.

We should open a thread and stick it in this section about, all psp history, or star from there days, about cfw chronology with links and novelty, like also patch software.
Many user, came back here after some weeks or months and say.
I was away from psp scene from.....ect ect. Can some one explain last novelty?.
I think this is a good idea.
Thanks.

lol... *ahem* I would like to inform the general populous of MaxConsole that i work long, and hard! I toil away at my workstation drinking copious amounts of caffeine infused drinks and whittling my fingers to the bone (TO THE BONE PEOPLE!) churning out fine examples of programming [Research into loading executable code into a hijacked process from an internal variable simply because it sounds cool], scripting[adding GZIP compression to a website because it looks elite in the HTTP headers], graphics[porn] and web design[lol, that's what I've been doing?!], to the utmost professional industry standard[LMFAO!!! what?! it works... what else do you want?! the server isn't on fire.... wait.. errm.. brb!].

To be honest it would be a short article, I joined in with the fun shortly after the release of the slim, the only notable things i can think to say are.
The TA-085v1 (Like the 1000 series) has battery EEPROM write access, thus enabling creation/normalisation of pandora batteries, this feature was disabled at the hardware layer in all subsequent PSP motherboard revisions.
The PSP Fat (1000 Series) battery will fit into and power a Slim (2000 series).
There are (it seems) two sub types of TA-088v2 (I call them TA-088v2a, TA-088v2b), type a is stable with DC5, type b is unstable (Hence the creation of DC6 based on the newer kernel).
The only notable exploit which made it to full kernel mode HEN on the 2000/3000 series (and was subsequently released to the public) is the ChickHEN exploit which utilises a crash in the libtiff library first released by MatIaZ to execute h.bin, a few people worked on this and i was privy to a test candidate of the TIF file for testing before the vulnerability was crafted to execute unsigned arbitrary code, the exploit is inherently unstable across all motherboard revisions.
Another exploit which is worth mentioning is the GripShift username buffer overflow(/underflow(?)) exploit, which ended up writing to $ra (Which in PSP terms is gold, as $ra is Return Address), which allowed homebrew to be executed in user mode via an SDK, This could have become a fully fledged HEN had someone taken the time to hike this up to kernel mode (Using whatever method), but since you actually had to purchase the game it was somewhat undesirable to the general populous.
The TA-088v3 has an updated preipl authentication routine, it WILL enter service mode with a pandora battery but since our current custom IPL's fail preipl authentication in this instance an unbricker is not possible at this time, at this point it's also worth mentioning there is a TA-090v1, it is a PSP Slim 2000 series, and is fully CFW'able, it's rare and is believed to be Sony using up old IC stockpiles with new TA-088v3 style motherboards, it began turning up when people had sent bricked units to Sony for refurbishment.
The TA-090v2 contained a microphone and screen enhancements, and we assume the same or similar preipl as the TA-088v3, it will not respond to a Pandora battery by entering service mode, and the battery reports its serial as 0x000000 (Probably due to some kind of error), it's speculated that the battery communicates with the PSP using some form of encryption layer, Datel where due to release a LiteBlue tool battery containing technology they had reverse engineered from the 3000 series which would put it into service mode, however Sony slapped them with a Cease & Desist, and it's probably still tied up in court. It's worth noting here that simply because technology is purported to exist which is capable of putting the 3000 series into service mode, this does not mean that CFW can be installed on it, as the preipl >IPL authentication would still have to be exploited.
Methods of installing custom firmware:
No matter what motherboard model you have, if your firmware is 5.03 Official you can execute ChickHEN, from there you can use HellCat's recovery Flasher (1.60) to install the latest custom firmware, or if launching the exploit from any FAT motherboard or the TA-085v1 slim board you can create an MMS and Pandora to install CFW in the traditional manner, if you have a TA-088v3/TA-090v2 there is 5.03GEN-X which will patch custom firmware into memory, effectively emulating it on the fly.
Some notable software to accomplish this:
Rain's Ultra MMS Maker
HellCat's Recovery Flasher (Version 1.60)
ChickHEN-R2
MHUSPEEDv3
OSPBT
DC8
That's pretty much it...

Yes, Download 5.03 official firmware and install it (NO HIGHER!) google ChickHEN-R2 or MHUSpeedv3 (Doesn't matter which) and install it and execute it on your PSP following the (Simple) instructions contained within the download, apparently MHUSpeedV3 is more reliable than ChickHEN-R2, but for continuity's sake try ChickHE-R2 first.
Note: Both of the above exploits are inherently unstable (there is nothing that can be done about this), you probably won't get them to work straight away, try a couple of times (When it doesn't work, the PSP will freeze and power off, when it does work the PSP's screen will flash green and reboot), there are tutorials online which detail how to increase your chances of this working.
Download and Run PSPIdent which will (among other things) tell you which motherboard you have:
if your motherboard is a TA-088v3 you will need to use 5.03GEN-C: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ATTEMPT TO FLASH A RESIDENT CUSTOM FIRMWARE TO A TA-088V3 (Such as ANY M33 release, or ANY GEN release - Only use 5.03GEN-A/B/C, C being the latest), YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
If it is a TA-088v2 or below (3.95 Official will either be a TA-088v2 or a TA-088v3), use HellCat's recovery flasher v1.60 to directly flash your flavour of custom firmware
In short, yes your PSP is hackable :) remember... Google is your friend.
Go do all that, come back and post your results.
Is it safe to flash my psp to 5.50 gen-d straight via XGEN UPDATER V5 or am I stuck with 5.03gen-c? (see attached bmp)

Your PSPIdent states you have a TA-088v1/2, yes you can flash GEN (Or M33) to your console. Only a TA-088v3 should not be flashed, i believe (but don't quote me) that the latest GEN updaters will not flash to a TA-088v3 and i know that HellCat's recovery flasher will refuse also, homebrew developers have done their best to protect people from their own stupidity.
Another good thing about your motherboard is, that no matter how bad you screw it up, we can fix it :)
PS: remember to post your progress, the reason advice is given is to find out how it went and share the joy of it.. yes that sounds kinda gay but humour me..

Just bought a PSP-3000 Core pack from Best Buy with a Manufacturing date of November 2009 and it came with FW 6.xx installed. I couldn't find any "Box Code" so maybe they just use Mfg dates now.
Just to confirm that you shouldn't expect to find a PSP-3000 core pack with <5.03 pre-installed unless its manufacturing date is way earlier than November '09.

I just bought a refurbished God of War PSP Red from ebay. I thought at first all God of War PSPs came with TA-088v2, so it was hackable. Then I read there is a TA-090v1 for refurbished PSPs, which is hackable. Though, I was wondering did Sony update the motherboard for refurbished PSP 2000s? The TA-090v1 came out in 2008, so it's been 2 years. I'm just scared Sony might have updated the motherboard to something that is unhackable.

"Only"?? Hah, I wish I could find a 2000 here, I've been searching for months!
You better get a 2000. If I'm not mistaken, all 2000's are hackable nowadays, unlike 3000's.
The difference is, you supposedly get a brighter screen with the 3000, but it's actually shittier
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2008/295/psp3000vs2000831_screen.jpg.
(I can confirm that, I have a PSP-3000.)
It's a little lighter, and it has an integrated microphone for Skype (and those few games that support it).
But not all of them are hackable. Definitely not worth the risk.
MaxMouseDLL
09-18-2010, 06:15 PM
The only 2000 model which is not hackable is the TA-088v3... but it's worth noting that any PSP regardless of model (with the exception of the PSPGo) is hackable (to a degree) if it has firmware 5.03 or below installed on it.
For example the 3000's can run a GEN HEN which has almost all functionality of CFW.
