Try using the bootmii installer to install the hbc or follow the guide in the sticky.

Have you tried installing Cios? Also maybe you'll need to downgrade, but I don't know a guide so try google.

By "Bannerbomb didn't work," what do you mean? Are you getting a black screen? Did you try all versions of Bannerbomb?

i had problems with this, i got a file from "http://www(dot)mediafire(dot)com/?qjjgmzlglzw" put to sd card then go into wii data/channels and select sd it will launch bootmii, in the menu select uninstall hb channel then install hb channel this will render hb channel working again, keep the card in and launch hb channel then choose downgrader (optional because i ran this and my system is still 4.1 and its supposedly meant to go to 4.0) anyway the hb channel is working so im not phased by downgrading, hope it helps

My Wii is currently running 4.0E

I am wondering: Can I upgrade to 4.1 without any trouble?

I have used Trucha Bug Restorer to install a patched IOS36, and I also installed a patched IOS36 as IOS 249.

If I have understood this correctly, the 4.01 update will patch IOS36 to disable the trucha bug. But will it remove my patched IOS36 installed as IOS249?

If not, I will simply be able to re-run TRB after the update, and repatch the IOS36 using the IOS249 I have installed now, right? That is my planned course of action, at least.

Answeing my own question:
The IOS36 apopears to still have the trucha bug after the update, and it did not touch the one installed at 249. So basicly, you don't miss anything by upgrading.
