According to the Telegraph, much of EA's plan to tackle its $1bn loss announced in May rests on the success of FIFA 10. Despite soccer not being so popular in the USA, the producer himself was surprised at just how popular FIFA is in the respective country.
<blockquote>At the publisher's summer showcase earlier this year, it announced that the $1bn loss EA posted in May would have been substantially higher had it not been for FIFA.
While EA won't be drawn on exactly how much the FIFA franchise contributes to its overall profit margin, it is a safe bet to say that there is a lot riding on the success of FIFA 10.
It is helpful, then, that the FIFA series has seen its popularity in the US jump.
"I think if I was honest, I'm surprised about how popular it is in the States," says Rutter. "I know how hard it is to follow football in North America because I live there. The big challenge for us is how do you build on that because it's not a sport that's part of the cultural consciousness of people in the region."</blockquote>
