Here is my experience:

I have 3 systems, one with benq, two with liteons. ( internal MU and memory card model )

I have IX 1.6 on all the units. I am using Verbatims 2.4x. The one Liteon with the external memory card has given me some read errors over the past year. ( it is less than one year old ) The funny thing is that the errors were on certain backups at certains places, but not with the originals. The backups also played fine in the other units.

Until the recent new games ( wave 3 ), it has been a slight annoyance only. With the new games it seems to have become a bigger issue. All new games ( batman, nfss etc ) gave me some problems with read errors. Batman would load to the start screen and then give the error. You can hear the drive spinning, then spin down at that point before the error pops up. These discs do not have a problem in the other units.

I tried to reflash, adjust the laser dvd pot etc. Same issue. To make a long story short, I replaced the drive last week with another new liteon and it works like a charm.

I think that for some reason some liteons have an issue with being flashed?
The new liteon keeps the disc spinning where the old one would slow down and then give a read error at certain points in the games.

I thought I would just give my 2 cents on the error.

I know ODST has issues and some say its the dashboard update, apparently MS are working on a patch for it.

it's no secret that some liteons are crap at reading backups.

i've never liked liteons, but some are good.

i still say sammy or benq all the way.
