View Full Version : MS blocking 'unauthorized' 360 storage devices

Major Nelson has warned that next week's 360 update will see the BLOCKING of 'unauthorized' Xbox 360 storage devices. By this we think he means unofficial hard-drives and also Datel's memory unit but time will tell.

Here's exactly what the Major said at his online blog:

"When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to “back it up,” you’d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you need help identifying officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on Xbox.com"

Now a full blown modchip would be justified. this blocking unauthorized hard drives is unnecessary.

I wonder if they also talking about upgraded hdd with hddhackr.

seems to be the way people interpret it.... dont know why.

the hacked hdds contain only official licenced hw/sw.

now, 3rd party unlicenced hardware on the other hand was reverse engineered and not supported by m$..

i think what m$ is targetting here is crap like datel memory units and stuff like that.

if m$ was to target 120gb hacked drives, they'll have ALOT of pissed off people. just like the whole used xbox360 being banned thing, its hard to tell unless you actually buy it,

many people likely have in their posession a hacked 120gb hdd if theyve ever bought off ebay or second hand at game stores.

i also believe this is in preparation to the 250gb hdd launch. i bet m$ has a trick up their sleeve with that specific drive so we can be detected unlike the 12-gb counterpart.

I remember they did something like this on thr xbox 1 when people used pen drives as a mc.

Although i understand why MS want to block them (to make **** loads of cash), they need to understand why the alternatives are preferred by some.

Last weekend i had to buy a mc from a shop because i urgently needed it to swap hdds with someone who was there just for the weekend....£35 for what is essesntially a 512mb usb stick which i am only jusitfying to myself because i now have one to backup my saves and move my profile to as well as the free upgrade to a 60gb hdd.

on topic

i think they mean the datel business seeing that other hdd's used report back as identical and all 120gig or 20gig HDD how are they going to see the difference between an orriginal and a fake?

Just keep treating your customers like **** Microcrap so they switch over to Sony. What a bunch of fucking morons. I haven't plugged into the internet in months anyways so it won't effect me.

Amusing and reading into it i think this will affect hard drives too, larry applies links under authorized devices twice which shows 120gb hdd 60gb starter pack and a memory card. I wonder how many people downloaded the same security sector!

Looks like two groups are responsible for this, shame it wont affect gamer score cheaters, they really need to put some real value back into those numbers.

I suppose you can describe the 360 as the Ryanair of the games consoles. Its the cheapest HD console but you have to pay for every little piece of **** and they dont give a **** as to whether you like it or not.

I wonder whether the datel HDD backup device will become more popular now since most people wont pay £100 for a £40 HDD.

I wonder how they detect unauthorised HDDs? Does the HDDS.bin contain a serial number or a unique ID of some sought, or does the HDD have some sought of apple ipod style chip which is only being used now to detect fake/unauthorised devices?

The reverse engineered stuff probably will be easy enough just by hashing the firmware of the device.

Mark my words, they will not ban selfmade HDDs. You can by 120GB HDDs from eBay that are visually indistinguishable with the real deal. If they start banning those, they have a support nightmare on their hands.

yeah because people who buy 3rd party UNSUPPORTED and UNOFFICIAL memory units are customers to m$.

lol.
and yeah, it will affect you as soon as you play a new game that requires the latest dash update.

Yep, as the PS3 is flying off the shelves, M$ is still sticking it to the consumer. Sounds like a good business model. RROD's are still going on too. My friend's roommate had his new 360 for 3 weeks. Dead already. I've had my PS3 for 2.5 years...absolutely no problems. The other cool thing about PS3 is that it hasn't been compromised. This keeps PS3 happy so they won't hit your system with invasive updates. In fact, if memory serves me correct, PS3 even told everyone how to install their own PC HD's. Now that's a brother helping a brother out. Screw you M$!:D

I have to admit, I like the Xbox360 much better then the PS3, BUT I think I might start playing my PS3 again. When it comes to allowing the user to do what they want with THEIR box, microsoft is the biggest piece of ****. I mean, come ON! I bought your fing console for 400$, let me do what I want to it!

Just another way of Micro$oft telling you, that you have to purchase their overpriced accessories, instead of being able to use 3rd party cheaper ones. Just out to make a quick buck...again...they don't care what their customers want....and like another poster said, i hope the EU sues the ass of them again for this.

Sony & PS3.....do what you want with your console, which is the way it should be. Now...back to Uncharted II ;-)

I've just read through 7 pages worth of hatred for M$ over at majornelson.

What are M$ doing with this update?

Are they crazy considering the open storage options available on PS3 and Wii?

More storage = more space to put your paid for ($$$$$$$) purchases on. WTF?

$149 for a 120GB HDD is just a blatent rip off, whatever way you cut it and lets be honest, 120GB is sooooooooo old news.

We live in the era of the Terabyte, not the Gigabyte!

M$ is making loads of cash by selling official accessories. this is holycarb if M$ blocked "homemade" hdd. I am seriously considering to get a pre-owned XDK console when i travel to china. XDK can load any size of sata dirve without signature and no game region restriction....er, the best reason is "they are very cheap"

not exactly wasting money. 3rd party products have always had the history of failing prematurely. i think the n64 was really the only console where the 3rd party controllers lasted longer.

either way, if people bought official 360 accessories in the first place, this wouldnt affect them at all. this only affects the poor asses who shouldnt be gaming to begin with cuz they want to save $20.

So what's your point??....the 360 has a 30% failure rate,,,you're so dense you think I should go and buy a 360 HD? They don't know how to make hardware or software. (XP, Vista, please!! LOL:eek:) Why would I listen to you or them?

"this only affects the poor asses who shouldnt be gaming to begin with cuz they want to save $20." Dude, you also may suffer from "dumb ass" syndrome. Let's see. At new egg, a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s external Notebook Hard Drive is 59.99 with free shipping. M$ HD is 149.99 for a 120 GB HD that you have to drive to go get. That's 120% more for 270% less. The funniest thing of all is that you bought a 360 knowing 30% of them die and you like to buy HD's that went discontinued about 4 years ago. Lastly, you win your "dumb ass" award because you don't know the difference between $20 and $90 in savings...where did you get $20??..oh ya, $20 makes your point seem logical when in fact you lied to make your point. Now who's the "dumb ass?" The best advice that is the smartest advice anyone can give is to stay away from M$. You are literally throwing your money away. I didn't even mention that M$ makes you pay 60.00/ year to play multiplayer games. I am on my 4th 360, my warranty is out and I have a dead 360 in my closet. How much money do you think I saved "dumb ass?"

You just said what I have been feeling for the past few years. I understand that M$ has to make money on their HDDs but do they need to charge so much for it? Yeah I'm sure that plastic encloser the HDD is held in costs so much money. Its BS and I'm tired of it. Screw them for being so greedy. If they were fairly priced I'd buy them and not complain. Maybe no more than $20 more than what the actual HDD costs? Is that too little for you M$?

**** that ****. When Christmas rolls around, I intend to be enjoying it with my brand-new Nintendo Wii.

I totally agree. What makes this all really stupid is the fact that they can get away with freely throwing around the same tired old excuse that SecuROM uses for continuing to "protect" PC games with their OS-tampering malware, and to them, the opinions of anyone who disagrees with their methods are clearly biased towards being allied with promoting illegal activities on their precious console (i.e., guilty until proven innocent by swearing complete and total loyalty to the company & never complaining about anything bad they do ever again).

To put it in simpler terms......If you're a regular gamer who doesn't like this ridiculous & obviously BS update, then guess what - in their eyes, that makes you a software/video game pirate! If you're a member of the video game industry, or a developer of third-party equipment for various consoles, and you think that MS is being a bunch of brain-dead ****sticks for implementing this outrageously dim-witted idea, then guess what - in their eyes, you're actively supporting video game piracy!

Couldn't have said it any better, but don't waste your time on him. As long as it's M$ branded, it seems ok to him.

But hey, his stupidity feeds our entertainment! Just like his sig says...
