View Full Version : Disney working on 'Blu-ray beater', online storage 'Keychest'
The WSJ has reported that a new service called Keychest is to debut from Disney that would give users access to media from a wide variety of platforms and devices including PC's and mobies.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the service, called Keychest, would give users access to media via a wide variety of platforms and devices, including PCs and mobiles.
Using Keychest, consumers would purchase access rights to a film or TV show, rather than have physical ownership of material on a disc.
One Keychest solution would involve digital files being stored on a cloud server rather than on PCs owned by consumers. Customers will pay a single fee in store.

I doubt that this will have any significant affects on physical media but this is where change starts. If Disney can implement this successfully then other studios will be right behind them. In the next ten years or so we will probably have a majority shift from physical media to a pay per view type set up. This is good in the sense that less physical media equates to less resources being used but on the other hand I prefer to own my media so that I can use/watch it when I feel like it. I do not want to have to connect to the Inet in order to watch something.

It actually would be better, if you think about it physical media blows. My tiny scratched skipping piece of **** dvd's and blu-ray discs would agree. If it works I'll take it. At a discount of course, I hate it when steam charges the same fuckin price on release. It brings my piss to a fuckin boil.

I second this comment.
There will always be a higher demand for Offline entertainment if the option is available.

It's slightly ironic considering Disney backs the Blu-ray format. I wonder what kind of DRM they're going to put on these digital copies.

Streaming isn't going to match blu-ray's quality for YEARS. Even as services like the upcoming Zune video are boasting 1080P streaming, 1) not all 1080P is created equally, it can be compressed all to ****, and 2) Don't forget hi-def audio, which I doubt ANY streaming service is going to offer, possibly ever.

Umm Blu-Ray discs are designed to work flawlessly even with scratches, they tested it with a knife edge across the disc... worked perfectly, you must be purposely damaging them yourself for them to be skipping/not working...

I remember that test very well.
Anybody here have problems with a scratched blu-ray game or movie or are they really that hardcore?
It's a step to combat piracy none the less.

Good point, never thought of it like that.
It have to be incredibly good to completely obliterate physical media, which can be decrypted, ripped and upped to the internet.
