Anyone else remember Nintendo having something like this at e3 in 2002 (I think it was)?

Anyone remember the craptastic sega hologram games in the 90's, Time Traveller and Holoseum? Looks like a more advanced version of that, very cool but what practical use does it have...maybe for 3d artists to preview renderings or for industrial modelling but I cant see any real use for regular folk.

I remember the Time Traveller game. Man did that game suck. It was a huge machine, but only had a tiny display. The display on this Sony device is huge in comparison.

It's actually a different technology from those old games.

Did you notice the "dark moving bar" on the 3D images? That's being caused by a refresh rate.

My hunch is that this is an adaption of those 360 degree screens you see at malls, or those childrens light-up-globe toys. Those displays and toys have an armature with a row of LEDs mounted to them. The armature rotates fast enough to display a picture.

What Sony probably did was to find a way to mount LEDs or a backlit LCD bars to the armature at staggered depths. Thus, they could alter the image depth by controlling which LED/LCD bank was on at the time.

It would've been cool to see one of these displays turned off.
