GBA Games wont save

my friend has a cyclods evo and a 3n1 and it loads the games but on some games it wont save and others it keeps corrupting the save, i tried it out with my edge and gba exploader .58b i belive and it did the same thing, so i was thinking maybe we need to format the 3n1 somehow to make it like out of the box new, does anyone know whats going on and how to fix it, or how to format it to make it out of the box new style?
