Following on from our leaked specs that indicated that the next Wii would be Blu-ray equipped, we have news that Nintendo has reportedly mentioned again that the next Wii will indeed support high definition.

One of the recaps is from today's Nikkei Industrial Daily, which has an article about last week's Nintendo earnings report. During the briefing, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata apparently touched upon the specifications of Nintendo's next generation console, indicating that the console would likely make use of HD visuals.

Yes, I'm aware this is all extremely vague. What you're reading here is a summary of a summary of what was probably a vaguely written article in the first place. If I manage to get my hands on the paper, I'll post a more detailed summary. Alternatively, it's possible that the Nikkei article sourced the Q&A section of the briefing, which Nintendo will likely post in full to its official site some time this week.

Oh well if its true I just bought a limited edition black Wii so I can't be botherd to buy another one, that and I have a PS3 for Blu-ray, would be nice if it upscales Wii games properly, 720p would be good enough I really can't see WiiHD being 1080p because Nintendo are known for saving money where they can.

Lets do a just for fun (because I'm bord lol) and all post the specs we think the WiiHD will be compared to WiiSD!

Expect this as the next generation console not an upgrade.

Also Nintendo are known for cost efficient hardware, not saving money. The Gamecube was almost on par with the Xbox, just little differences here and there and in the end devs pushed more out the Gamecube than the Xbox.

And so on backwards, this is the first time that (second if you include the DS) that Nintendo have produced a low powered system.

 So what about the Gameboy against Sega gamegear and Atari lynx.

Oh yeah I know about all that I just can't see this console WiiHD being as powerful as an Xbox360 though but thats just my opinion and anyway I'm still quite happy with the Wii although to be fair it can gather dust at times.

If it is good then lets be honest will they abandon us again I miss the good old Nintendo games I'm not into all this family fun stuff. I want to see the console with brill Ninty titles as well as some killer games from others, like your never going to see a Forza style game on the wii and thats because of Nintendo's way of building lower powerd systems.

The N64 was more powerful than the PSX I know, but they even then refused to add CD-ROM support, if they did they would have had the killer apps of the time like FFVII but that due to its size had to go down the CDROM rute, like with the Wii they had the option to give it a HD capable graphics crard but refused because the could not see HD in every home, but now look bloddy every where!

Nintendo as much as i do love them there ignorance will be there downfall!

Are you kidding? The XBOX 360 can do 1080p and it's been under $200 for over a year. Nintendo is no stranger to being the graphical top-dog WITH a lower price. Hell, they even had the PS2 beat in the last generation (not Microsoft though).

Because Nintendo doesn't have to use obsolete processes or bleeding-edge tech, they can possibly make something MORE powerful for LESS money. For example, nVidia has to keep producing old DX9-class GPUs for the PS3 as does Microsoft for the 360 (ATI/AMD/GlobalFoundries only designed the GPU for MS; they don't produce it). A cut-down GPU with a modern feature set (DX10/11) that only needs to aim to match/beat 4-year old tech without it needing to be pushing the limits of what is possible today. That is much cheaper because it can be manufactured along-side whatever chip is the fastest available today (cut-down version of it). It would still have the benefit of DX10/11-class effects, even if it can't compete with the latest $400+ desktop PC GPU.

NEWS FLASH! The XBOX 360 isn't "powerful." Neither is the PS3. They used tech that was already in use/old in PCs when they were released. For the first time in history, an new generation of game consoles were already eclipsed by modern PCs of the time. They didn't refuse HD for that reason. They refused HD because it would have meant raising the price to a level that would have made it difficult, if not IMPOSSIBLE to successfully outsell the competition. Even though it was ready, Nintendo held the GBA for more than a year so that the price was more appropriate. It didn't hurt that the GBC was still selling like gangbusters thanks to Pokemon.

Nintendo's mantra has always been to introduce new tech when it can be done at the right price. The time for this upgrade was last year but, as we all know, at that time they still couldn't keep the Wii in stock the way it is!

I'm expecting the wii HD will surpass the PS3 in technology due to the fast pace of technology process and advancement. I'm sure by the time Nin release it's product, it will cost very little.

Can't wait for wiiHD. NIntendo made the right move with the wii. Now, the WiiHD will be on spectacular system at the right timing.

It should kick ***

Since when did I say xbox360/ps3 were the most powerful thing on the market? I said that I can't see it being as powerful as an Xbox 360 also I'm fully aware of all this you keep telling me about techy stuff your talking to someone that builds PC's everyday for the past 6 years lol.

I honestly think just like the last time when the Wii was being released everyone was speculating way over the top, they were saying it's going to have dual core PowerPC CPU's and some even said it would have dual CPU's basically loads of bull!

So in kind of defense of my opinion I;m telling you now your going to be lucky to see a dual core CPU and if no dual core then a CPU that might for nintendo go over the 1GHz range maybe 2.5Ghz, not only that Nintendo CPU's tend to have very low important amounts of L2 Cache, even when the Wii was being developed 1MB of L2 cache was not much to ask for really and I don't honestly think it could have cost that much more to develop.

Nintendo don't care about consumer afford ability they care about profit margins just like everyone else, thats why they made the Wii with the specs they did because they had left over Gamecubes that they needed to do something with so they got a new CPU and upped the RAM changed the BIOS and there done, and maybe melted down some plastic.
And don't give me the bull about Nintendo care about there customers because they cares as much as Sony and Microsoft.

And the only reason WiiHD is coming out as soon as it is, is because of the piracy rate on the Wii. So don't tel me they don't care about profit!

lol wheres the wiitards who slated ms n sony stating hd is rubbish, lol nintendo will make a wii 2 with slightly better graphics and hd where no doubt lol ms n sony will make a even better machine maybe supporting 3d?

nintendo are allways one step behind when it comes to consoles, they force so called innovation then near the end of the console life make reports that it failed or didnt do aswell as expected maybe due to constant turd games.

VERY RARE to find a MUST OWN title on a nintendo console, since the N64 nintendo has gone down hill.

I didn't say you said that. You called it "powerful" when, for the first time in history, the latest consoles couldn't be called that even at launch... and that is despite them costing much more at launch than any previous mainstream console. Doesn't sound like technology was progressing fast enough. Even then, they were pushing their limits and reliability suffered.

Oh God. You're back.

First of all, Nintendo has always been one step AHEAD of their most sucessful competitor. The NES trashed the Atari 5200 and XE (none of the kids I knew even knew what the Master System was, including myself). The SNES was far more advanced than the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. The N64 was far more powerful than the PSX/Saturn. The Gamecube was clearly more powerful than the PS2. The Wii is the first time they have ever entered a console generation with last-gen tech and they did it because HD consoles were now TWO and THREE times the price as any previous console of theirs. Nintendo had never launched a console for over $200. The 360 was 2x200=$400 at launch and the PS3 was 3x200=$600 at launch... both lost TONS of money. If Nintendo had a similar price it would have been a barrier to entry and people would not have given them a chance. They all would have gotten 360s or PS3s. They made the right decision, they proved it, and you still won't just shut up.

And keep imagining that you were right and everyone else was wrong. You know good and well that anyone who argued with you then said exactly what Nintendo said: HD was too expensive THEN and not appealing enough AT THAT TIME. They said all along that they would introduce the tech when it could be done at the right price... exactly why they delayed the original GBA by a full year to introduce it at closer to $100 (and yet it was still the best handheld at the time).

I don't know what kept you in it for so long but go crawl back in that hole you came out of. It doesn't seem to have done you any good but at least it kept you from making an ass of yourself for a while.
