I modded my wii about two years and i can't remember which chip i used. I remember it was one that was open source and started with Y i believe. Last time i updated my system was for Punch-Out and i haven't used my Wii since. I noticed alot people mentioning that Wiis getting bricked due to updates and i'm hoping to play the new mario game coming out which means i have to update. Is there a chance that i can brick my system if i update through the nintendo? IF so what can i do?

thanks

edit: remember the chip is called Yaosm

Just install the latest IOS files using DOP-IOS (cant say which ones yet but probably 38, 53 and 55) and block updates, what system menu are you on now?

I also recommend installing bootmii and doing a boot2 backup to prevent bricks.

you can also regain access to the shop channel using:

NEVER update to system menu 4.2.

Thanks for you reply.

If by system menu you mean the update, i'm currently on 3.4U. I'll look around the web to see how i can install/ use DOP-IOS. My other question was for the bootmii, is there any limitations saying that it wont work with some modchips?

thanks again

BootMii works fine with modchips. It has nothing to do with loading backups, it just sits before the system menu on startup and allows you to launch the Homebrew Channel or backup/restore your NAND. Could very well save you from a brick.

It can also be useful for other things, for example, I once used a backup to downgrade my wii's system software.
