[4.0E] with wiikey makes hackmii nescessary?

The new smb iso doesn't work on my wii with 1st wiikey (1.9s), so i think it is now time to install things like neogamma.

I've done some research, the best method is bannerbomb and install homebrew channel. But do i need hackmii also?
I have the original firmware 4.0E installed. should i upgrade before this?

I've read neogamma can be launched from the homebrew channel, so this shouldn't be a problem (google).

But i wonder if i need things like hackmii and a more recent firmware version...

I had to get Neogamma for NSMB too. The Hackmii installer can install the homebrew channel, bootmii and dvdx on your system. Really all you'll need is the homebrew channel but tbh there's no reason not to install bootmii as well. It has some very nice features, you should look it up. ;)
