Hi,
I havent used my wii with any new games recently (most recent being wiifit, an original game I got with the board).
Is there anything I need to be aware of regards newer updates/backups. Will it be ok with my originla Wiikey, or do I need to update its FW first?
Not quite sure what FW my Wiikey has on it currently, but remember upgrading it around the time of the Metroid release.
Many Thanks

Some newer games require either patching or some homebrew to run e.g. NSMB.
Also you need to make sure you are either up to date or the latest IOS files.
Finally I would avoid the 4.2 update due to compatibility issues.

hmmm.... i take it playing backups isnt as easy as before then?
I never bothered with softmod options as I have my wiikey (v1) and its been upto the job so far.
Are there any new updates for the Wiikey available, or is my Wiikey obselete and my only option with new games being soft modding?
What are IOS ?
Thanks for the info.

I am in the exact same situation, and I am wondering if there is anything I should be looking out for when removing the WiiKey. Can I just open up my Wii and pull off the WiiKey? I would really appreciate it if someone that have went from using a WiiKey to soft-modding can shed some light on this.
Thank you all in advance!

Generally, IOS 38, 53 and 55 is needed for games if on 3.2 (4.x has these)
The methods to load games if not patching the game/system menu is to install CIOS R14 and run neogamma, if on 3.2 then its easy to run patched games.
The days of easy backups are over, the wiikey is still useful but its not as easy as before.

Thank you for the info. Looks like i have got plenty to catch up on.
Can you clarify a few things for me?
I have the 1st incarnation of the Wii, as I bought it at launch.
1) Is the Wiikey v1 now redundant? If not, what do I have to do to get new games to work with it?
2) If it is redundant, what is the best alternative to get backups working? The brief bit of research makes me think that soft modding looks a bit long winded to get working... is that actually the case, or am i reading a bit too much into it?

2.) This is the best tut for soft modding I have seen so far:

Only takes 5/10 min's (depending on firmware version), I have soft modded so many wii's I have lost count.

Thank you all for the info. I think I am all set for soft-nodding my wii now. Except, do I need to remove my wiikey before softmodding it? If softmodding works even with the wiikey attached I don't think I'll bother taking it off.

The only issue i know of with modchips is dvdx, so unless you need that dont bother.
Besides its still useful for older games Amand under certain circumstances.
Finally havent checked the guide but make sure to install bootmii as boot2 first to lower brick chances or
make recovery easier.

I only ever play backups from my own region. (PAL)
From what I understand the NSMB is the only game that doesn't work with the original wiikey v1....is this correct? If so any idea if they are to release a wiikey fw upgrade to rectify it?
Are there any wii updates that will brick my wii/detect the wiikey that i should look out for?
At present im not interested in homebrew, just simply want to play my backups.... is the wiikey still ok for me?

Well I have the original WiiKey on an original Wii and received NSMB for Christmas....
Put in the disc, said 'yes' to the update and it plays perfectly fine. My existing backups also all still work. :)
