hi guys,
Just received a second-hand wii, with 3.3E firmware. The owner's nephew used to play on it and she said its supposed to already have been modded. I tested the wii with a backup game, but got the "Error unauthorised disc". However in the package, i found a little microchip, so i have attached the photo below.
What is this chip and where does it go???
Is it any good or would i be better off softmodding?

Thanks for your help.

looks like a wiikey v1. though check it and make sure it isnt fake.

The Wiikey v1 is old though with no support, particularly for newer games like NSMB which require either homebrew or patched system menus to run.

First of all i'd like to say thank u so much for ur help guys.
Rather than waste time to try and fit the chip back into wii console, last night, i decided instead to softmod the wii using Dogeggs's softmod guide. With loads of help from a great friend (from another forum), I have managed to do everything, except the bit where you load Priiloader, but my friend said that instead of using Priiloader, that i should use Start Patch, because it can block game and online updates.
My only problem is that last night just as i was about to install Start Patch, i had to stop as i had to goto hospital because my daughter got injured.
1. Now could anyone pls guide me to install and use Start Patch? Is this better than Priiloader?
2. Also i want to be able to play games from external HDD, so how would i go about doing that?
3. Lastly someone mentioned that i even though i've managed to update to 4.1, that i must use 4.2 update, otherwise i can't play some games...is this true? The reason i don't want to update to 4.2, is because it blocks the usb hdd option and i would like to have that eventually.
thanks for your help.

Priiloader DOES have these blocks.
1.The only difference is that priiloader requires access to an SD card, however it also acts as slight brick recovery as it can grant access to the homebrew channel if a semi-brick occur.
Anyway here start patch:
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Startpatch
2. Just get a USB HDD and plug it into the USB socket closest to the GC connections.
Run USB loader GX (recommended because it also allows you to rip discs from the console.
I also recommend CIOS 222/223 as its more reliable than 249.
3. No, 4.2 is just 4.1 with more anti-homebrew methods which have been patched.
Also I recommend installing bootmii as boot 2 if you can because it allows you to backup your nand for easier brick recovery.

right, thanks.
now i'm even more confused mate. I did look into 4.2 hack, but messie's guide stated:-
"Waninkoko's 4.2 SAFE updater is already out here, but it is not recommended that you update to 4.2 anyway. An online update will remove any cios you had on the wii!! You will lose the ability to play backups and load through usb! this is only for those who are already on 4.2."
Let me tell you what i want from the wii to be able to do:-
1. LOAD GAMES FROM USB HDD
2. MUST BE ABLE TO PLAY ALL NEW GAMES
3. MUST BE ABLE TO PLAY ONLINE AGAINST OTHERS, BUT NINTENDO MUST NOT BE ABLE TO BLOCK IT OR TRACK IT
Are you telling me that ALL the above can be done even with 4.2 update?
Also what is the advantages/disadvantages of using priiloader vs start patch?

Its more complicated to softmod thats all, personally, I would stick with 4.1, there is NO reason to
upgrade.
The system menu is nothing like the 360/PS3 where you must upgrade for online. If you need to update the shopping channel and other non system menu items, just use this:
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/WiiSCU
I cannot say how online safe this is, the only bans I have heard of are cheaters.
just install CIOS, the homebrew channel, use usb loader GX and maybe Bootmii as boot2 for brick protection.

I am on system menu 4.1.
I have my own HDD (a 2.5" WD 160GB) and use USB loader GX with CIOS 222 (I couldnt get CIOS 249 to work properly with SSBB).
I once tried system menu 4.2 (I updated using wanikokos updater to avoid the dodgy boot2 update), but I later downgraded using an old bootmii backup because it blocks certain aspects of the wiikey e.g. changing settings (at least I heard this).
