New Wii and play backups from dvd?

well, this is my first attempt in Wii world ,i bought it for xmas to my nephew and i want as well softmoded the console , my questions does a new Wii can be softmoded ? if yes could i just play the backups from the dvd or it's works just from sd card?

All Wii's can be soft moded, the newest versions like the limited black Wii's will not allow you to play dvd backups beacause of the new chip on the dvd board, the only way is to play backups via USB Flash drive or USB Harddisk.

If it has a D3-2 drive then your only options to play backup's are SD Card, usb stick, usb hdd or buy a replacement dvd drive that does not have a D3-2 dvd drive chip and fit it yourself.

There is a 50% chance the chipset is GC2-D3-2 (v2) with no drive chip.

I got this for my wii and i am able to play DVD backups and watch DVDs.
