View Full Version : MS: Hardcore gamers will love Project Natal
While the Wii has been highly admired by the casual markets, Microsoft has gone on record to state that their project Natal technology will actually be the subject of much love from HARDCORE gamers. Apparently, 70 percent of publishers out there are developing for Natal at the moment.
<blockquote>"Take your hardcore gamer, they're going to love Natal,"Bach explained. "Now, they'll play a different style of game on that when they're doing it. When they play Halo: Reach, they might be back with their controller doing some very, you know, targeted things. But the style of game they will play will be different."
"But they will absolutely love Natal," he added.
Bach also stated that 70 percent of the publishers are now developing titles for Project Natal. The company revealed a modest listed of Natal developers during this past Tokyo Game Show. The list included names such as Bethesda, Capcom, Konami, and Ubisoft. </blockquote>

Gamers: We're not convinced by project natal because all we've seen is living room marketing and laggy ball-kicking videos.
Stop hyping, Convince us! Show us a game we'd play (not halo too easy to cheat) being played by independent gaming journalists with just an Xbox 360 and the Natal attachment. Until then just stop the hyping its making me less interested and more worried about the final result.

When he said 70% of publishers are developing games for natal, what he really meant was 70% of publisher are porting their wii games to natal. Publishers do not develop games, developers do, publishers just publish them.

I feel the exact same way, it's about time someone said it.
I would love it to work well, and i hope everything they're saying about it is true but i'm just not convinced. This is also coming from someone who is generally in favour of sony products, but i do own both consoles and hope all these new control schemes work out. I mean, it can only end up better for us right?

Wait a minute...
I would class Halo (excluding CE) as "casual" gaming myself, if that's the "hardcore" market they're referring to I can see a lot of unhappy (IMHO) true "hardcore" gamers.
Saying that, this statement...
"Microsoft understands hardcore gamers don't want to stand in front of their TV and wave their arms when playing Project Natal. For them, Natal will be a very different experience."
...brings back a bit optimism.

wait lets be fair now... the wii did this exact same hype with the wii and wiifit.
show little and talk more.
Id like to see more also but you have to think they are scared someone will copy them if they show to much to soon.
There is still a lot of time before natel comes out... its only jan. We should see more at E3.

@c4113n We can hope and i do hope for both Gem and Natal its just very important that the software matches up, Killzone 3 with Metroid Prime 3 style controls would probably be a great start.
As for this hardcore thing the term is too loose and now they're adding sitting down to game into the mix? I'm fairly sure this gamer doesn't exist.
@danight Nintendo did run with some hype over a couple of E3 visits with little real substance on the first but that's kind of my point? The technology is great but how many true gems are we given once the words are over?
These days we're expected to buy these devices on promises, hype, pre-rendered tech demos with the phrase hardcore thrown around, I don't feel i'm wrong asking for some substance this before the hype starts.

Well considering the dev kits just went out a few months ago... id say there isnt a ton to show without giving away major info. Like what games will launch with it. Thats a major secret usually to make sure the competition cant line up a counter lineup.
Now a wii sports kinda deal probably isnt to much to ask for... but id expect sony in the next week or 2 to launch a counter campaign or press release talking about their controller to try and steal hype.
On the same token dont expect much real info to be given away with them either.
Its natural for us to want more info but the nature of the business probably means we wont get much until E3 at best. Just because to show us it action would mean devs give away vital info. Like what devs are working with it and what games they may be making for it.
ex: if infinity ward says heres our demo, then its expected some form of COD is gonna use it. Thats probably what they wanna avoid since microsoft doesnt have the biggest 1st party studio lineup.

We'll just have to see what they come up with, but I'm with ThreeDog (well I'm always anti-hype). I just hope they get things right, controls should be made around the game, not the game made around controls.

you know publishers do develop their own games. a good eg. would be EA. i know there are others but i just need to point this out since everyone thinks that because a company is a publisher, they cant make games. did you really think some company like EA would wait for a develop group to surface? what if theres no developers willing to give them a game to publish. do u think theyd would 1-2 years wo a game to publish? therefore, other publishers can also develop games.

Simple answer.
No, they won't.
I can see ds like games working with Natal(ie Phoenix Wright).Maybe a DDR game...or sex sim. That'll appeal to "hardcore" gamers.

Nah Sony seem have stuck with it's targeted hardware rather than ripping out mandatory components in the process. ;)

A SLIM PS3 with an Emotion Engine chip?
Bloody hell mate you'd have been lucky to find a Phat PS3 with a Emotion Engine chip, not even my launch 60GB model has it and I bought this over 2 years ago! o_O
Wanting a PS3 Slim with a Emotion Engine chip is just plain dumb.

Lack of instant & accurate responsiveness is a huge NO for hardcore gamers.
Can't imagine playing any high precision game like a shooter on Natal.

The big disadvantage of Natal is because its camera movement.
Wii managed to do it because its physical hardware controls, and is not as limited as Camera games.
I dont know how Natal will work, but the current camera games on 360 and PS3 isnt that good. In fact, i own most cam games for both systems, and only "Your'e in the movies" works good enough in my opinion.

I will continue to be skeptical until I see but I do admit I dream about the possibilities with some genres...particularly RTS which is one of my favorites...Halo Wars was the closest to a playable rts that I have seen on a console so far but I think there is alot of promise for motion type input to take it beyond even what a pc can do with rts. :)
Well when avatars came out they said it would be 'awesome'. Nobody likes it. It's just another stream of income for microsoft.
Microsoft is just hyping up their own trash again.

All this hype is not aimed at the consumer. Its being manufactured by microsoft to attempt to get more developers to make games. Given the intensity of the hype, it sounds like they are having a hard time getting developers on board.
Nintendo did the same hype but they also said that they were aiming at new demographics to expand the gaming market. It was a gamble on their part and they too had to convince developers (many of whom were not convinced until the wii started selling out all over the world). It paid off for nintendo but the 360s demographics are not casual gamers, and new customers are not going to go out and buy a 360 AND natal just to play a handful of games when they can just get a wii. So microsoft has to convince people that hardcore gamers will love natal. But I dont think anyone believes that for a moment.

The Wii was more well received by people including those within the gaming community, this was back when we thought the wii had real potential.
In the end however, we end up with 98% shovelware, most decent games are first party with a few good games from others.
These days I actually tend to have more fun when getting hacks to work or playing old GC games.

Knowing from previous games which emphasize on one good bit of the game... it'll be right at the end after everyones got fed up with the whole thing and just play GT or something...
