I have 2 broken xbox'es. Need some tips.

Hi guys,

So, i am the lucky winner of 2 broken Xbox360 consoles. My first one (the old kind, without HDMI) wont read any discs, and my secound one (new version, with HDMI) gets 2 red rings on the circle.
Here is what i was thinking; I read somewhere that the red circles ment that the GPU was broken. Can i take the GPU out of my older Xbox and just switch it out with the broken one? I tought about putting the DvD rom from my new xbox, into my old xbox, but i really want to have HDMI, so i was hoping to use the parts from the xbox WITHOUT HDMI to fix the one with HDMI.

That sounded very confusing. Let me put it this way; What can i do to fix the RROD? None of the consoles have a warranty, so i need to get them going myself :)

no you cant remove the gpu from one & put in another .
but you can fix the red ring of death 99% of the time
with a simple fix that costs no more than a couple of £.

check ebay for RROD fix kits after that all id recommend is having a heat gun
(ie paint stripper & follow few guides.) just google or follow the tutorials they have on this wonderful site.

guide 1. how to open the 360 (so as you dont make a mess of the case)
guide 2. how to remove everything & prep the motherboard
guide 3. what to do with said heat gun (much better than the overheat method) found on youtube just search there.
guide 4. how to fit the xclamp fix (i.e the RROD fix kit)

then put said 360 back together iv done it 3 times now & each time worked perfectly.

the one that does not read discs,assuming its the correct drive for the unit,in otherwords not just a drive someone banged in there.you can either swap the laser or drive completely.

the one with lights on,just xclamp it.

Hey guys,

Thank you so very much for the replies! I just put in an order for X-Clamp with CPU cleaner and opening tool and the whole package, for like 14 dollars, so now i am just waiting in excitment and praying that its gonna fix my RROD.
As for the one with the broken DvD rom, i was thinking about changing the DvD rom and modding the console, but it really bugs me that i cant use HDMI on it, since i have a pretty new 40" screen.
We shall see! Anyway, thanks alot for the help guys. Lets hope the x-clamp works :D

just picked up a new benq for £16.99 off ebay. £29.99 seems a tad expensive................you can buy a faulty xbox complete with a spare drive for that money :)

2 red leds is "just" an overheating problem, no RROD. 3 is a RROD

just a tip on the 2 RROD I had this one 2 xbox360s I did the repair and all was working fine for hours while the xbox was stripped down and not had the shell put back on but as soon as I re-assembled the xbox's they both 2RROD I couldnt suss out what was going on took them apart they worked fine put back together 2RROD gradually I put the long screws back in 1 at a time and all ok untill I put the 1 thats at the back in the middle and the xboxs 2RROD happened so I left the screw out re-assembled xbox's and never looked back both working great for months now.

Yeah just x-clamp the one with 2 lights then at least you have ONE working one, then I'd send the other away or something
