edit: Before we start: Just how active are these forums? I know there are posts as recent as this year, but this site doesn't appear to see much in the way of traffic.

Is save editing only done on the PSP via a program such as CWcheats, or is it also done via a program on a computer? If the latter is possible, do you need to install custom firmware or otherwise mod your PSP to edit saves in this manner? Finally, does the editing usually involve just turning on a cheat and saving the results, or is it more in-depth? I believe things like "all items" would have a cheat as they are pretty standard. But, name changing would have to be done on a case-by-case basis since each edit will be unique.

One more thing: (might be getting into general PSP hacking here.) Have the 3000's been hacked yet? Even if they have, I won't risk bricking mine. I might buy an old crappy PSP and make the battery and whatnot after I get some funds.

Also, I have a request if anyone has cwcheats: can you take my MHFU save and put all items on it for me (that's pretty simple)? See...
(There was a link to go here.) The thread right below this one, probably (called "MHFU US save hack," or somesuch). Look on the third page for my posts.
...for more info. (I put a tl;dr section at the bottom)) Also, no links until you have 10 posts is a dumb rule, imo. Also, it'd be great if I could resize text.

you need CFW, a hex editor and a plugin called savegame deemer to edit savegames on PC.
savegame deemer decrypts the gamesave as you save it.
cwcheat is more hassle free way to go, and its search engine makes it quite easy to find adresses of interest (lives, health, etc)

PSP-3000 has been hacked if you're firmware is 5.03 or less running on chickHEN then using a CFWenabler.
if you have above 5.03......then you lucked out

Thanks for the info. If you're going to need CWcheats either way, then going through the PC is uselessly complicated.:p

I have another question about firmware: New games require newer firmware, don't they? I update my PSP from my games and I can't play a new game until I am updated. So, I'd have to wait for a CFW update before I could play a new game. As long as your CFW receives good support, that isn't an issue, I suppose. I'd worry that they couldn't beat the system, or that the developers might just quit the project. You could switch firmware, I guess.

I also just thought of something pretty unrelated. Do emulators recreate a console to the point that if one was to take the save data from a memory card he or she could load it in an emulator? That would require some work, probably. But, to ask that question differently: How different are emulators from their real world stand-alone counterparts?

At this point, PSP emulators seem to still be in their infancy. So, by the time this is feasible, the PSP2 will probably be out and I could mod my PSP all I want without worrying about a new update bricking my PSP.

This is probably oldnews. I just discovered there is an action replay for the psp. It has a "Battery Enabler" and loads up "as soon as the PSP turns on (i.e. before the XMB)." It appears that it is pretty much the Pandora's Battery/Magic Memory Stick.

That is apparently an early attempt which ended up sucking. The new version (a compact disc) puts the AR program in the update folder and the PSP thinks it is an update. Anyway, it uses the OFW and runs on all models of PSP, apparently.

How I think this works: AR looks like an update so that it can restart the PSP and load before the XMB boots. You can still update the PSP normally because AR doesn't actually affect your firmware. Atm, it shouldn't brick the system. I'm pretty good with computers but there is a lot I don't know so correct me where I'm wrong.

This is amazing because Datel has apparently figured out how to encrypt unofficial data. I have a question about this: Is there a way sony could make AR quit working? I don't want to buy something only to have it quit working after a bit.

EDIT: I was going to post a link to download the demo, but can't yet. This may be better suited for the plain PSP hacking forum anyway.

Anyway, there is a demo of this available on the site. The demo doesn't activate the cheats, but is otherwise the same as the full version.

One more edit: Would someone mind trying this out? I'm going to look for more information on it. Also, while this could help me on my games, I probably won't buy it for a while, if ever. My offer for the save edit is still open. :D

the GEN firmwares have keys that can run newer games on older firmwares, also theres a few eboot decrypters around that allow you to run newer games as well

@Clarkie: I tried to go to your site via a link you posted before. it was ".co.uk" I think. Must've been an old site. Anyway, I'll do that.:D

yes, although i think theres a problem with kingdom hearts (from what i been reading in the hacks section), although i think it only applies to the ISO, if you have the umd i think it still works
