Self proclaimed PS3 hacker George Hotz has told the BBC that he can do whatever he wants with the PS3 and it's just like he has an 'awesome new power'. Likewise, he added that he hasn't FULLY hacked the system but can TRICK it to do anything.

Sony said it was "investigating the report" and would "clarify the situation" when it had more information.

Mr Hotz said that he was continuing to work on the hack and, once finished, would publish details online in a similar way to his previous iPhone exploits.

In particular, he said, he would publish details of the console's "root key", a master code that once known would make it easier for others to decipher and hack other security features on the console.

He said his motivation was "curiosity" and "opening up the platform".

"To tell you the truth, I've never really played a PS3," he said. "I have one game, but I've never really played it."

Opening the system could allow people to install other operating systems on their console and play homemade games, he said.

In addition, he said, the hack would allow people to play older PS2 games on their consoles.

There wont be a decent emulator (if at all) for a long time on newer consoles (only make it easier to run stuff on the PS2 compatible units. Unless Sony had some secret hidden PS2 emulator hidden all this time.

PS2 emulation was done through software in later BC models... So why wouldnt someone be able to be dump that emulator,,, or port an exsistin gone over?

If anyone can do it.. This guy can. And since he did it with the Iphone... no firmware upgrade has been safe for longer then a month.

I believe Sony only removed part of the hardware (the Emotion Engine (CPU)) but the Graphic synthesizer (GPU) was still on the mobo.

you would have to create an emulator for the GS in order to get it working. Whether or not this is possible I cannot say, we will have to wait until at least the current system software is reverse engineered to see if it can be done.

That`s bullsh*t. Ever used Linux ? You`re a typical console-kiddy. The point is : A normal PS3 is just such a WASTE. There`s so much more you could do with it except gaming. I don`t care at all about copying games. Hell, there`s 1-2 games per year that are interesting. Why would I copy them...

But when it comes to piracy, if this machine is opened up to play copies of games, then the PS3 will be doomed as all 3rd party software developers would leave in there droves, and then it would only be any good for emulators & Linux, and ultimately Micro$oft would win the next Gen war. :eek:

i know geohot is a respected hacker on the idevice scene but until i see some proof it just hot air as far as i'm concerned.i hope i am wrong but why broadcast the fact that it has been done on the internet and to the bbc. he is just asking for the $ony laywers to come knocking on his door at some point, or is he looking for sony to pay him off if he tells them what the exploit is.i believe that is what happened before on the jap launch of the console, someone found an exploit phoned sony and he got a nice bunce for telling them how crap they are at doing their job. for the fact of dark_alex coming back onto the scene through the ps3 is people just having wet dreams. odh well time will tell if this will turn out to be another paradox / ferrox fisaco.........................sudeki300

Well congratulations are in order for both sides, the ps3 for holding out, and geohot for getting it done. I still remain 50/50 about this, I sure do want full access to the hardware, if nothing else just because (I'm sorry, I like to void my device's warranties.... it's my weakness), but I don't really want piracy to ruin things. Well only time will tell if it was good or bad, will the increase in console #s eventually lead to increased games sales? or will it sony just keep bleeding $$ on every ps3 purchase?

In all honesty, I think this will either help, or destroy the ps3. Status quo has left the building.

WTF? Really?!! F*ng Really?!!! Every console this generation (other than Sony) have been hacked six ways to Sunday and Sales still went up!!! Yes piracy sucks but the real majority use tools for the greater good and entertainment. There is a lot of focus on the negative even before this thing comes out. They way the industry has been going content will no longer be available as media and exclusively online. Sony can start making a profit off the consoles again and people can justify a purchase for a multi-use system and an Linux PC. I remember running Black Rhino on my PS2 (before the adapter died).

I hope Dark Alex and Paradox step in to get this up and running as soon as possible.

Utter USELESS.....Ps3 is all about online gaming,if i wanted to play free games on my own i would buy a cheap banned 360 or play cracked pc games.

its a waste of great online console & too expensive to let it get banned.

If what i have been reading up on this guys hacking blog, that its going to be very easy for anyone to hack there own PS3, no matter what model you own, that's the difference, if its going to be as easy as hacking the PSP, which i have achieved myself also, then i stand by my statement that the PS3 is going to be doomed, it's difficult to hack the XBOX360, i should know i have tried, and that is why the XBOX360 is still doing well, as for the Wii, i don't own one of those, so i can't comment on that.

I really don't give a hoot what you people think of me, but if i end up being right, who will be idiotic then......Mmm think about that. :p

well its released,
download the files and tell me its easier than the xbox360 to hack.
you have to pull your ps3 apart and pulse a 40n seconds shock of electricity into a certain point on the PCB. not to mention you must have linux installed (which means slims wont work. so all the people going OMG, im going to get PS3. either a second hand fat or sorry, you should of got one sooner)
you have to compile the code also before you can run the kernel hack. so theres alot to it.
the xbox360 is waaaaay easier to hack.
and "it's difficult to hack the 360"
NO IT'S NOT, its piss easy to hack the 360, as is the wii (the wii is alot easier) alot of people just dont like pulling the 360 apart to hack the drive.
and the wii, no pulling apart required, get bannerbomb, install as a channel and bang, its hacked, and how well is the wii doing again.

which you will have to go through same process to make system run arbituary code.
people talk about how easy it is to hack the PSP.
the Wii is ALOT easier by a long shot.
sony have managed to block exploits in later firmwares.
the Wii can still be hacked.

well its a hudge oppotunity for all the developers that will work in the near future on the playstation 3. this is the first step but there are many steps to be made. I wish all the developers the best to make the playstation 3 fully hacked so everybody who owns a ps3 could run the homebrew.
