The New England Journal of Medicine has a very comprehensive look at the injury sustained to the foot of a girl due to Wii Fit. So if you're interested in reading the scientific break-down of how Wii Fit can cause you injury, the look inside!

In the United Kingdom, a healthy 14-year-old girl presented to the emergency department at Horton General Hospital in Banbury (near Oxford), having sustained an injury to her right foot with associated difficulty in mobilization. She had been playing on her Wii Fit balance board and had fallen off, sustaining an inversion injury. (The Wii Fit replaces handheld controls with a pressure-sensitive board about 2 in. off the ground that lets the user participate in tricky games that can improve balance.)

On examination, there was soft-tissue swelling around the base of the fifth metatarsal, which was maximally tender to palpation. A radiograph showed a small fracture of the base of the fifth metatarsal (Figure 1). The patient was treated conservatively with the use of crutches and was referred to the fracture clinic for outpatient follow-up. The fracture probably resulted from the pull of the peroneus brevis muscle during inversion of the ankle.

Wii Fit didn't injure this girl, she hurt herself. I'm sure it hurts like a *****, but she could have injured herself just the same stepping onto a sidewalk.

But I do firmly believe that you can burn a LOT more calories playing DDR though, especially on Expert. :p

Your x-ray clearly shows internal fixation, but the report says she was managed conservatively.

If "falling" off a 2" board does anything at all to your foot then you have other, more serious, problems.

I tripped and fell of a single step at my house a few years ago and broke my foot. I was carrying a stack of computer parts, got distracted and stepped off the corner of the step and missed the walkway, foot turned in and snap...I had to wear a cast for six weeks. Oddly enough it was only 2 weeks after my wife had broken her foot in a wreck...I told her I did it on purpose so she didnt have to go through it alone :)

Anyway...yep you can break bones "falling" just a few inches, but its human clumbsiness not the Wii board to blame.

If she fell off a bike, they would blame the bike for not being stable, if she stuck a pin in herself, they would blame the pin for being sharp, if she drank battery acid, they would blame duracell for making batterys too easy to open.

This isnt news, just an axident by an indivitual which happened to involve a wii one way or another.
