Uhm...60 million.. I belive that never will reach the 70 million. Piracy help to sell console. This is it. New psp model, aren't hackable, This mean less sold. Is unveliable like Sony, prefered to sell less console and gain less. From the biginning everyone thought that all the software companies would move on Sony, because there is piracy on it. No piracy = 100% gain. Look now. Sony are loosing the exclusive.

What!? So your saying Sony should of left the PSP hackable?!? Doenst make sence at all. Then No wonder has sold Millions because that toy was hacked like in what... 3 months of its release.... and it continues to be hacked with little effort. So i guess Nintendo and Microsoft should not worry about patching their system and let people continue to hack their systems.

WAIT a minute... UMD is alive and well? Well sorry but I thought Sony decided to dump the format and release the psp go. Why are they trying to back up a format which they have pretty much lost support for.

Because their replacement isn't ready and they need to keep revenues up. Hardly anyone is using their PSP to connect to PSN (pre-go) and hardly anyone is buying UMD games let alone movies.
The ideal thing to do is lie to everyone and tell them its still selling to squeeze every drop out of it until the E3 announcement.

maybe dead in the US.
but in australia its alive and well.
i know heaps of people and i myself still buy plenty of UMDs.
1.8GB vs DS's 2Gigabit which is only 256MB.
i know which format i prefer.
if i wasnt paying $100 every 6GB prepaid 3G broadband i still wouldnt buy off PSN. i prefer physical media.
i dont like the fact that if i buy a game, and it doesnt sell well, sony can just remove the title to create more space on servers. then if i have to delete it to fit another game then later i want to play it again. i'm screwed.
the movies look pretty good as well, i dont se what everyones gripe with it is.
nope UMD is fine with me.

I guess that "alive and well" needs to be defined :) Is it mostly about how PSP UMD-based games are selling or is it mostly about that the UMD format is still being supported (as in people are still making PSP UMD-based games)?

The PSP UMD-based games are indeed not selling that well in Europe and in USA, but in Japan it is actually quite popular. In the latest weekly sales report from Media Create, there were actually 11 PSP UMD-based games in the Top 50.

NDS - 19
PSP - 11
WII - 11
PS3 - 7
360 - 2
PS2 - 0

I know that chart placements alone doesnt necessarily tells how well a game is selling though. Chart palcements alone mostly tells if a game sells more or less compared to other games, but i also think that chart placements also shows which gaming platform software that is popular in general. For example, if you look at the Individual Format Weekly Top 40 charts for the UK, you are almost lucky to see even 1 PSP game there.

The DS is still the king in Japan (and worldwide as well for that matter), but there are 3 PSP games in the Top 10, and 11 PSP titles in the Top 50, so the PSP is doing pretty good in Japan in my opinion :)

The numbers of games that charted that i mentioned above here is only for 1 week of sales in Japan though, but i just quickly checked through the other Top 50 lists for previous weeks in 2010, and the lowest number of PSP titles that i saw charted in the Top 50 was 9. The highest number i saw was 14 i think. So usually quite a few (relatively speaking) PSP titles are charting within the Media Create Top 50 on a weekly basis :)

I am not trying to "justify" (or what i shall say) the PSP sales in general worldwide by saying that they are good just because the PSP is quite popular in Japan just to underline that. I know that the PSP sales (especially the PSP software sales) arent really that good in Europe and in USA. I just wanted to mention that the PSP is quite popular in Japan at least :)

It might have looked like the PSP Go would replace the older UMD-based PSP indeed, but i dont think that Sony said that the PSP Go would replace the older UMD-based PSP. I think that the PSP Go was/is ment to be an addition model to the older PSP models, maybe similar to like DSi XL is an additional model to the DS Lite and the DSi. The DSi XL isnt replacing the DSi, at least not yet. Maybe the DSi will replace the DS Lite though, or maybe it has already been replaced? Do Nintendo still manufacture DS Lite?

I have also read that some people speculate that one of the main reasons that Sony made the PSP Go (besides trying to make money) was to try to get as many PSP games as possible up on the PS Store so that the games could be downloaded and to be ready for download when the PSP2 comes out. It is belived that the PSP2 wont have a UMD-drive in it, so Sony wants to try to get as many PSP1 games up on the PS Store so PSP2 owners could buy older PSP games as well.

This is just speculations though, but i think that it sounds reasonable :)

My biggest problem with the GO as well as the seemingly forced digital download future of consoles is that when the console is no longer supported its simply a battery sucking brick. I hate umd as much as anyone but at least if say PSN went down or they decided to no longer support the PSP I still have games I can play. Regardless of how long the PSP GO is supported you are still essentially renting the games and they should be priced accordingly. Currently the only way I know to have a local copy of your game is if you also have a PS3, but frankly I dont trust Sony enough to not revoke the backups if they dropped the PSP. If sony provided some sort of interface like itunes were apps and games could be downloaded to the local computer and synched to the device I wouldnt mind but as it is now I just cant see any justification to buy one.

+1

I agree back ups should be an option for digital distribution, even if it had DRM. If you buy something it should be yours.
