GAAAH!!! I'm having some pretty crippling problems with this game lately. I've had to go through the entire game without using Familiar (freezes the game) and am now at the CoT - the post-game super dungeon. Basically, the bloody thing is freezing at least once a floor (the dungeon has thirteen floors).
I've tried 3.80/3.90/4.01/5.00 pops and none work great (I beat the final boss on 4.01, but the end cinematic froze, so I had to beat him again on 3.90 so I could watch the ending) and then read up that using the tried and trusted SLPS01222 made the game much more stable. About twenty minutes after switching Game IDs, I had another freeze - 3.90 CFW. Usually the freeze is before a magic animation ala Tales of Phantasia, but I've tried compressing the eboot less and it makes no difference (I used a compression of 5 instead of 9), which is what I found alleviated ToPs' problems. On SLPS01222, the freeze came when exiting the party menu (so that basically makes this ID useless).
So my question is - has anyone played this game through on a stable-ish pops that makes the Cave of Trials actually playable? On a side note, I'm annoyed anyway because I checked up on TheGamer'sPress to see if the game was alright to play, and the comments there basically state the game is flawless on 5.00, which is rubbish. The game is NOT flawless on 5.00 and I am playing the NTSC version, with normal Game ID and SLPS01222. I also don't really want to play the PSP remake (I'm stubborn).
NB: I'm playing the game via two single eboots as multidisk eboots are difficult and annoying to make. However, if people are sure that a MD eboot works better than a SD eboot, I'm happy to change. In my experience, MDs are more trouble than they're worth, they're limited customisation-wise, and I can hardly ever get them to go past a black screen at start-up.
