The rumour is that SEGA have contracted a UK technology firm to plan a console. They are considering cheaper processors namely Nvidia and AMD based stuff and will be aim to be below $299 whilst competing against the HD consoles.

Although I would love to see a new Sega console (mainly to see a decent Sonic game again), this is unlikely to be a home console and more likely for arcades which I believe Sega are still in IIRC.

i dont mind if sega is developing a new console because the more console there is, the better the competition will be. you wouldnt see nintendo, sony, m$' slacking off releasing new games or putting new ideas in their existing and future console... and we know sega arent new in making new console... they have competed with nintendo and sony before and they can go head to head with m$ after all these years they hide in the shadow not making a console. if nintendo and other **** dont maintain their leads, sega can slip through and begin to revive as console maker again.

some of my favorite games were on a sega console... but i dont see why they are getting into a new console. i could maybe see them making cheap arcade boards for japan or something.

Would be nice to see sega back in the race, a console with nintendo level first party support but with a willingness to produce more than cutesy family games would be great. Don't get me wrong nintendo make great games but they have a severe dislike of making anything that is graphically realistic or more gritty, and kiddy tv style graphics get old very quickly, it's unlikley nintendo would make somthing like a deadspace type game but sega would have no qalms about it.

nintendo did make disaster which was a great game, and of course the metroid trilogy could barely be called kiddy style either.

I would like to see SEGA back in action but looking at their software of late would there be a point? A console requires first party games at the forefront of its attack plan and we all know what SEGA have been like lately.

If this is remotely true i would suggest that SEGA take a step back and take a look at themselves, Cancel the project and maintain its current approach with software until it is vastly improved.

We don't need a fourth entry to the market, We don't need another clone and there's not really any space for further innovation.

true, but they are not as common as the cutesy style games (better description then kiddy games as they are not exactly all kiddy games), they do make em but they are so rare that they stand out like the ones you mentioned.

Well i really dont believe this is in any shape of form true. I will still talk why it oculd work and what it could do.

Normal gens where like 5 years. So microsoft and sony get jealous of wii and instead of making new systems all together. they make addons.
Still still leaves the down falls of the main system there.

Sega could add more ram Say 1 gig and way better GPU and attack both ps3 and xbox 360 on the HD front since both cant handle 1080p really.

Sega could try and secure some low level dev studio that might be struggling. To provide etx first party titles. Sega could also be a publisher allowing 3rd party devs to use them instead as a cheaper for vs say EA activision or such. Kinda like what SE does.
This might attract devs to make games for them since the profit margin is higher with less pay out to publishers.

Now for the controller? Lets just make a genesis 6 button controller and a wii mote clone. That way we have the best of all worlds basically. 1 type of controller is so last gen :) Now we need like 10 different controllers per system.

memory card. This could be fun and right up segas ally. remember dreamcast had the VMU`s? Well bring them back as mp3 players so you can listen to music on the console and take it with you. Play basic colums games that can play with friends over wii fi.

Now the network... if you cant make a better online experience than nintendo, you suck.

So basically there is potential for sega to do some things. Like jumpstart next gen. Microsoft and sony seem like they are locked into this gen for another 3 years with these addons. Since next gen will probably have upgraded versions if not before next gen.

Sega hasnt spent years trying to figure out what works, they can just look at the big 3 and see what works and pic and choose what ideas to steal from them.
Then they just have to get supporters and implement it.

What is sega did the go live thing where you dont buy games you just rent for time periods. basically you pay to play what you want and when.
This could total counter act all 3 of the big 3 and really change the way we think of networks this gen.

----------------------

Ok the bad news.... unless sega deals with google, apple or someone else to get some major funding, they are in no shape to attack any of the big 3 head on. And yes the big 3 could easily gang up on lil old sega.

Now if google backs them.... that could be a evil combo.

Apple + SEGA would be better... Apple has lemmings ;)

agreed.

so sega wants to fail again ? (honestly i hope they don't) but if this is true i think it will fail.

how i see it theres no room for more consoles in the video game market, just look at EA or something, if there was they would probably made one by now.

just thinking about a 4th console....uh but we'll see what happens i guess.

I love all the SEGA=FAIL talk. Shows how much everyone has grown into Xbox and Sony fanboys.

Sega "Failed" because they were light years ahead of everyone else.
First console with internet.... First console with addons for every type of game like fishing, shooting......

To many great games on dreamcast, Genesis was a monster.. Master system murdered NES in terms of variety.... (by variety I mean not using mario in every game to sell it)

If sega has been hiding in the shadows this long making a console, you better be damn well sure its going to be competition.

Sega didn't fail because they were ahead, they failed because they simply couldn't afford to compete with Sony on marketing. It costs a bucketload of cash to promote a product on the international market, and after the Saturn didn't perform as well as expected Sega just didn't have the dosh.

Sega again is in no financial position to compete with Sony or Microsoft in marketing spend unless they have the backing of a major third party company, or an investment group.

The only other way I'd see Sega release a console is if they redefine what they call success. If they can make money of they hardware, maybe they'd be happy with only 10-20 million in sales.

i agree... Sony could barely compete with nintendo who had way more money. sony was way to much.
Sega couldnt pay or out pay for exclsuives while sony could. sega could market as much.

sega did do 1 didstick thing that was a huge kick in the balls for them. They did the secret saturn launch to select retailers that pissed off other retailers who refused to carry or push their products.

If i recall right. Sega actually tried to cut a deal with microsoft during the xbox 1 days to have all sega dc titles bc with xbox. But microsoft didnt do it.

But sega clearly failed because of money and i think right now that is the number 1 reason we wont see them back in the hardware market without a major partner.

Sega failed because after the genesis they failed to market and support any console to a degree that ensured confidence in the consumer. Look at the mess of the sega cd, 32x, then the still born Saturn which was abandoned in under 3 years for the dreamcast which also under delivered. Yes they were innovative and yes they were "first" in many categories but they were dead last in knowing how to support and maintain a userbase. I could possibly see sega having success with a handheld, but in the console arena the forks already been put in. There only hope would be enough people young enough not to remember getting burned or enough nostalgic enough to forget it and I just dont think there is enough userbase to do that. I love SEGA, I have owned them all, even the nomad...but I wouldnt buy another console from them.

Sega was ahead in some areas but they made way too many mistakes, Even looking at how hard the Saturn was to develop for and the lack of communication between Japan, USA and Europe.

I love SEGA but to call everyone a fanboy just because you don't agree just makes you look like a SEGA fanboy.. and potentially worse than anyone else that had their opinion in this thread.

Look at what SEGA is now.. it speaks for itself.. i look forward to them publishing old games like Sonic Adventure on XBLA/PSN more than anything new they could shove in a box.

The console market is now taken up by three companies with endless funds, First party games that generally dwarf the quality of other offerings and a general aim for domination even if it means killing the competition with financial incentives.

How would SEGA clean up their own games, Afford to pull the marketing feats required, Create their own console with mass market appeal, Convince developers/publishers to take on a fourth system, Develop the online network required by gamers today and convince people that they're there to stay and not just going to die after an attempt?

I would be ready to buy a new console from SEGA if they could prove to me they have what it takes... just as im waiting for Microsoft Sony and Nintendo to prove to me to part with my money on this that and the other.

Sega equals Fail when it comes to consoles.

They released FIVE consoles at the same time Nintendo had only released the NES/Famicon.

Only Sega could blow the amount of win they had going with the Genesis. First they release 2 expensive add-ons quickly and then drop support just as quickly as they came and then follow it up with a rushed released of their next-gen console that was so expensive that it made the previous add-ons look cheap.

I also don't think this is true, and if it was would also advise sega to rethink their stance. Once upon a time sega could sell a console simply because of their first party games.... but that wouldn't be the case anymore. With the crapware that is a high % of sega first party games, why would people then buy a sega console? 3rd party devs could potentially think the same thing, and so they would ask themselves, why should we waste resources porting to the sega console?

I personally think they should concentrate 100% of their efforts on making their classic series as great as they were once considered, and also bringing some of their dead series back to life, THEN if they start seeing some worthwhile sales and criticism they should consider a re-entry into the world of consoles.

Due to their practices, I would love to see sony leave the console manufacturing scene, and I would be thrilled if sega could bring their A-Game to make that happen, but if they were to attempt doing that now, then I think they would fail.... MISERABLY.

It would be awesome if they could come in, and release a console that you don't need to spend 2X as much as the original console cost you on accessories. Package the console with a game, enough full controllers for 2 people (assuming they go the motion sensing route in the same manner as sony/ninty), and make it a reasonable price tag... well if any of these idiots did that it would be great.
