A Japanese company, Digital Media Professionals, has released information that claims that their PICA200 GPU is being used in Nintendo’s next handheld, the Nintendo 3DS. The PICA200 GPU was supposedly created around 4 years ago in 2006 and certainly has greater graphic capabilities than the current Nintendo DS.
The most intriguing part of this announcement comes with the tech demo that was released alongside the chip which shows the graphical potential for the Nintendo 3DS. The tech demo is an eye-opener, especially on a handheld platform but I wouldn’t expect to see these graphics on Nintendo’s “3D” games; It requires extra processing power to render games in stereoscopic 3D.
