Guys,
I read somewhere else that external hd can't read games bigger than 4GB, is this true? what's your recommendation for storage. I currently have only the 40GB Ps3 and want to buy either an external or internal drive to expand for PSjailbreak. please advice. TIA

At the moment yes because of the FAT32 file size limit.
Internal is better, but at some point hopefully a version with either EXT, NTFS or a custom format will come out with large support.
You can get 120-250GB SATA for around £40-50 now but make sure to check the height because some a thicker than others.

Mostly only some of the ps3 exclusive tittles have retarded huge files, but the games that are on other consoles can be backed up usually on the external just fine. Only problem with backing up to a external it takes alot longer. So your best bet is to buy a bigger internal drive, i have a 40gb as well and with games requring you to install then downloadable content you have maybe 7gb left to your self

Is this really an issue? I have heard like 1000x before repeated that this is NOT an ISO loader. With that said the likelihood of the backups being such is probably not that great as they are probably just copied directly from the hdd. My guess is that it is just a raw dump of the disc, all files, in a directory (with game id and w/e) similar to how demos are done when they are unpackaged. If this is true, the probability that any file is 4gb is not great. I havent verified this yet, but will soon.

they are not .iso at all they are all files, but some games have files that are larger then 4gb just for that one file, if it were image files nothing would work because every game would be over 4gb externally of course i mean.

Just what I thought. Was hoping that there wouldn't be any individual files over 4gb though. bummer

Pretty much like an unpacked PSP game.
You've got a file and two folders [PS3_GAME] [PS3_UPDATE].
[PS3_UPDATE] contains PS3UPDAT.PUP.
[PS3_GAME] contains PARAM.SFO along with .PNG artwork.
[PS3_GAME\TROPDIR] Contains trophy data in TROPHY.TRP.
[PS3_GAME\USRDIR] Contains game data folders and the eboot.
Looks like there is plenty of potential to modify bits and pieces.

IIRC, the largest current 2.5" drives are 640GB. I can't recommend a specific drive though I do recommend avoiding Hitachi, in 18 years they are the only drives I have had suffer from the "click of death".
Generally Western Digital has proven good while Samsung are also decent and a good price/performance.
If you need larger, you can get kits which allow you to use a desktop/3.5" drive (they use the same data connection).
Also, 7200RPM are faster although you may have heat issues (although I haven't heard about anything happening because of their use).
^recommend some drives man if u can, i'll probably get a sam or a wd then.
i just want to make sure it fits and doesn't have that advanced formating that TD said some have.
hmm...

Advanced Format drive confirmed working exceptionally now. Had a good play switched some stuff formatted some stuff and everything seems to be good.
Western Digital 500GB WD5000BPVT 5400RPM is the drive i got i am extremely happy with it.
I would go for the Western Digital 500GB WD5000BEVT 5400RPM s pretty damn nice and is standard format.
I hear great things about the Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 7200RPM WD3200BEKT too.
alright sounds good then, how bout a seagate momentus or whatnot ?
i'm looking at either the seagate or WD, basically both are the same, 5400 rpm/500gb ect.

Honestly don't know about seagate so i'll let someone who does answer that one :)
i assume all/most 2.5 drives work with the ps3 ?
i mean hell even external drives do...
not to mention alot of ps3's shipped with seagate's....i think it's a safe bet.

Most PCs now a days come with Seagate drives. I think Macs do as well. They also own Maxtor now. We have a lot of them at work and they have been reliable. I buy WD for myself, though I have had one fail pretty quickly. Less than a month.

Hi! all. would like to clarify some doubts.
If a game has a file that has no files that are bigger than 4gb is it guaranteed to run
without problems from an ext HDD?

No its not, Some games simply do not work and others have a few bugs. It also comes down to how good your external drive is.
