Like how the Wii only became reality because the DS was a success.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're at least mulling over hardware options such as what CPU, graphics chipset etc will go in there, but yeah I also agree about the comments about Kinect. I guess they could always change some aspects of the hardware easily enough.

It's complete rubbish they probably have a good portion of it developed already. As if they would admit to competitors that they don't even have a clue what to do next. I'm betting it was said to try and get Sony to market first so they can bump up the spec of the next Xbox to be more advanced.

it's been know for about well 12 months that amd ati will get the contract for building the next xbox so not even contemplating seems a bit odd if the already have singed contract for cpu gpu with amd and co
estimated released date is 2012

so why lie when the cat is already out of the bag??
unless you want the biggest lairs gauntlet again this year:p
or your name is plain old M$ know for lies and deception
or it probably an not so elaborate/smart scheme to boost kinect sale
because there might be people unsure of buying $150$ kinect just for one year of play

yeah well it might be different or it might be correct and proof of such is hard to get.
but the idea of backwards compatibility with x360 and 2012 for release date sound just about right.

and the article in Nintendo's case did get the estimate date just about right, so it proofs / disproofs just as much:p

and for 2012 release date to happen you should surely be contemplating about what 720 will have and what not!:rolleyes:

good i think theyres still plenty that can be done with the 360 and ps3, i dont think theyres any need for new next gen systems.

also what i dont get is why both the 360 and ps3 are hd consoles yet game devs are making rendered movies that arent hd, a few games now ive seend with rendered movies and look blocky

I agree, i think all 3 have moved passed even the planning stage and are securing contracts on a actual build if they havent already got a prototype.
But of course they are gonna play dumb, all of them know that sales will go down the day they say a new console is coming because people will hold off.

Ye, developing a console probably starts some years before they get released. If Microsoft havnt even started to think about a new Xbox, then it might be like at least 3 years before we see a new Xbox. I think that there is a chance that we will see a new Xbox before this.

doesnt development normally start once the current model is launched? i can understand a short delay of a year or two whilst ms tried to sort out all the "issues" with the 360 but by now things should be at a point where the first AAA titles are underway, i'm still betting on a 2012 release across all 3 home formats.

you'd be right with the assumption that they started developing a new one once the 360 released. that would have been true. it all starts on a drawing board with ideas on what to do. it doesnt mean they have a prototype or anything.

just look at the ps3. long before it came out it was supposed to be able to use the idle cell cpu power from your toaster, or from another ps3 idling across the continent... well that never happened, it was something they had in the early early phase of the console.

In other words, yes they are making a new console now but don't want to show their hand jsut incase the competition tries to one up them.

The PS3 and 360 are both starting to show their age, and while the financial climate may mean this gen is longer than the norm, I doubt it will be long before info starts to slip out on the next gen.

If the quote can be believed, it says they are a long way from even 'contemplating' what's next. That has to be a lie. They would have some planned specs by now.

I can understand them keeping their cards close to their chest given the way things leak on the internet and the situation they caused after abandoning their last machine on 360 launch too. But clearly before the 360 launched some of the development team would already be researching what they do next with a small team still testing the 360 and working on the firmware.
