Violent movies can similarly "cause harm to children" but the industry polices itself. In fact, the game industry in the USA polices itself much better than the movie industry. When was the last time you saw an "unrated" console game at a store? When was the last time you saw a movie's rating on the front of the box or even 1/4 the size of an ESRB rating? When was the last time you saw the MPAA pressuring retailers to check ID and enforce age restrictions?

US stores set and enforce policy based on ESRB guidelines. Most have dire consequences for the employees that do not follow it. None of it is imposed by law.

I guess games are the "new kid on the block" as far as being a scapegoat in the ever present "it's not my fault it's his/its/their/her fault" debate in our society. That said, I support these measures, kids should be playing kid's games.

The US should make their laws similar to the UK's, it is illegal to sell a BBFC or PEGI rated game to anyone below the age shown on the front and that includes taking the money from the under age person while they're being accompanied.

I agree, our system has a lot of benefits that will also help the industry evolve the adult gaming sector.
