ok, someone had to do this and i'm really really sorry.

this game sucks right from the start, no bond theme, not intro just a bland startup screen that looks a little like the old startup screen from wipeout (psx) and from there it goes downhill, start the game and its like WTF this isnt goldeneye.

the moment you start not in the dam but a training mission you realise something is wrong, firstly its almost monochrome, secondly its call of duty modern warfare reflex edition with a new skin, little distance markers, the ability to climb over CERTAIN objects (whilst not others) and enemies lobbing grenades at you is all wrong.

once you get out of the training onto the dam its different and again disapoints so all in all as a single player its a slightly longer version of modern warfare reflex with a goldeneye(ish) skin.

now onto multiplayer..

a decent selection of maps that are similar to the ones on goldeneye but somehow in play still fall short, of course the split screen social multiplayer is still great fun and a reminder of just how much damage "online multiplayer" has done to gaming although i was sad to see many of the 50 playable characters are very similar with only a few recognisable characters (and no bond?) we were gutted to discover that robbie coltraine was not an available selection as that removes much of the fun from a multiplayer of "get coltraine" (google it), ok, so being modern warfare (pretending to be goldeneye) it does also have an online multiplayer mode which is no better or worse than it was on mwr.

am i still going to buy this?

well yes, there is just about enough of goldeneye in the offline multiplayer to make it a worthwhile purchase but if you have not pre ordered this i'd seriously look to buying a pre-owned n64, a few extra pads and a copy of goldeneye for around the same price then you can play it as it was supposed to be played.

scores...

as goldeneye, 4/10 (n64 version 9.5/10)
as an wii shooter (with online) 8/10 (6/10 if compared to ps3 / 360 shooters)
as an offline multiplayer 9.5/10 just because its the most fun you can have with a shooter nowdays.

update: apparently activision are worried because this game is tracking miles ahead of the ps3/360 bond game and is said to be superior in every way (except resolution) i guess thats what happens when you try to sell an online multiplayer game as a mainly single player title, with a 6 hour single player and a really bad online.

When I first heard that Goldeneye was coming out for the Wii, I wiped the dust from my Wii and decided to buy the game. I assumed, and hoped, that Nintendo were just going to port the original Goldeneye onto the Wii. After reading this review, I have seriously reconsidered. Is there anything similar to the N64 version in terms of storyline?

yes, much of the game does follow the basic premise of goldeneye, its really not a bad game to play (and to be fair its far far superior to the ps3 / 360 bond game). as i said the most fun to be had is with the social offline multiplayer because that is where its closest to goldeneye 64.

as i said most of my disappointment related to the fact that by using what seemed to be the cod:mw game engine it somehow cheapened the game, like yourself i was expecting (and hoping) for a direct port with updated graphics and some extra levels, rather than them adding things that tend to make almost every other shooter on the market so generic.

all that said we've ended up having to buy a second copy because it is fun.

I kind of enjoyed the single player game on the Wii, not nearly as much as I enjoyed the N64 version though....

I about cried when I realized when there was no boat level and therefore no shooting scientists in the leg and watching them limp away :(

I swear that level took me like 2 weeks to beat, not that it was too hard. It was too much fun shooting the scientists. Leg shot oh oh he's limping away *shoots him in the arm* haha!

Yes I am easily amused! lol

oddly there is a boat level right at the beginning of 007 bloodstone (ps3/360), but its not as much fun.
