my second review for here and its another stinker i'm afraid.

the 3 snes donkey kong country games were all superb, even the n64 version was quite a lot of fun despite its graphical glitches and overheating of the ram pack, so when nintendo announced a new donkey kong country for the wii, i, like many people were eager to get my hands on it.

booting it up in anticipation it looks good, a familiar sounding theme tune and obviously updated graphics had the look of a real donkey kong country game last seen on the snes, then i started the game...

lets start with the good, the game looks great, classically styled and the animation is smooth, the sound is everything you could expect too. the first few levels are well thought out and the overview map will also look familiar, this looks like a great game.

now the bad, there is no way to sugar coat this the controls are dreadful, you are restricted to 2 choices, remote on its own held sideways or remote + nunchuck, the onscreen instructions are not the clearest and in play it controls like a 2006 wii shovelware title with you constantly having to fight the controls to get them to do what you want, despite showing in the onscreen instructions that you waggle both remote and nunchuck up and down to do EVERY move in reality only the remote needs to be waggled along with pushing left or whatever to perform a roll, this game could have been superb with the addition of classic or gcn controller options but as it stands you will die frequently and rarely will it be because of something you did instead of a control issue.

i cant tell you about later levels simply because i just couldnt be bothered fighting the controls to get there, i'll let the kids try it later on and see if they think any better of it but i do seriously doubt it.

if you are looking for a great game for the wii this xmas you have several choices from black ops to the superb sonic colours, epic mickey and a shadows tale.

so the scores

graphics 9.5 out of 10 great looking, just what you would expect
audio 9.5 out of 10 sounds exactly like a dkc game should
playability 5 out of 10 may be better if you can tolerate the bad controls
controlability 2 out of 10, you dont so much play the game as fight the controls

overall 4 out of 10, with a classic controller this could have been 9 out of 10 because the game is that good but the control options are a total disaster.

recommendation, rent or download first to see if you are prepared to live with the controls before paying for this game or just go out and buy epic mickey, sonic colours or a shadows tale.

One thing to add is that if you have access to cheat codes, Accio Hacks or some other way to run cheat codes on your Wii, is that you can slightly adjust the controls to a much more satisfying control method.

Still not perfect but work IS being done to get Classic controls for DKCR! :)

So far you can remap all the shake functions to pressing the B button and this alone helps immensely!

So instead of pressing down and shake you press down and B, still not as good as classic control would be but better then shaking the crap out of your controller every 10 seconds.
