It wouldn't surprise me if scammers start using this now instead of the Spanish lottery.

Apple has a history of calling people who downloaded apps to meet a specific milestone in the past. I always wondered if their user agreements allowed them to do that.

As others have said, can't blame here as I would have done it as well.
In fact, if I knew that one day in my life, one of those calls or emails or popups or letters was really going to be for $10,000, I'm pretty sure I still wouldn't open, read, and listen to them all. :)

Seriously you lot are that scared of cold callers you just hang up?
All the dumb cow had to do was have apple verify her details and previous purchases for her on their end and make sure that they do not want a cheque for $5,000 to obtain the $10,000 gift card.
That's pretty funny that most of you would hang up, If you think you know what's coming there's absolutely no harm in finding out more information! You don't have to give anything away while they have everything to prove.

10 billion apps? That's two apps for everyone on the planet. Sounds like a marketing ploy to me. Or there is obviously a multiplier factor in the formula Apple uses to calculate apps downloaded.

or you cant do math
the last i checked there approximately 6.7+ billion people on the planet but most growth models show that durring sometime in 2011 we cross 7 billion
thats a big difference from 5
anyway and that multiplier is the fact that the majority of iphone users have a half a dozen to a dozen apps on there phone if not more
there is no trickery involved.

Right. These days, as I've only got a cell phone and not a home phone, I don't get all the solicitation type calls I used to with a home phone. So perhaps I'd be a little more willing to listen for a few seconds. If in the first second and a half they state that they're Apple (and it's a normal sounding human rather than a computerized voice) I suppose I would follow along skeptically to see what it's about.
However, I can't imagine I'd ever win something via email - would just delete on sight assuming the spam filter hadn't already done so. :)

I'd hang up too. If it wasn't a fake/prank, it'd be a phishing scam. Apple should have done her the courtesy of calling her back to tell her it's not a scam. That would have gotten my attention because calls like that usually can't call back.

Yeah, though as controlled as I am, I would have probably picked up the phone and screamed "WHAT THE F*CK!? F*CK OFF YOU ASS. I'VE GOT BETTER SH*T TO DO THAN LISTEN TO YOU'RE THIEVING ASS"
