I would prefer just to see one company leave the console market or fail so hard next time around it destroys them.... Would prefer two consoles and a PC to a monopoly or the current situation.

The motivation behind my opinion is that this would maintain competition at the console level, would still spawn and cheapen newer technologies for use in consoles and could be cheaper for the gamer that has been spending massive amounts of money just to make sure they're not missing out on great games.

Lets see, console makers lose money on each console sold for the first few years. After a few years, they break even or begin to turn a profit. Without competition, why on earth would new and improved consoles come out only to be sold at a loss again?

Capcom, I'm so so sorry you have to install and pay for multiple SDKs, port your crap, and market it for more than one console. Life is rough.

In a way, a single console would be nice, but we would probably be ****ed somehow to make such an idea bad.

as for worries of a monopoly the console market already acts like a monopoly pricing isnt driven by market forces or competitive forces it is dictated by the console manufacturers

even if a single console saw an increase in price im willing to bet it wouldnt be equal to the price of all three consoles combined

im betting there are likely a few on this site who have all three

and in the end i would think that the gamers benefit from those making games being able to focus all the resources on one platform

its kind of funny that people want these devices to play every single piece and type of media they own plus go to great lengths to see emulators ported to these systems so they can play all of their old games on a single system

it seems to me that a single system for the current gen makes this situation even more ideal

Before Microsoft came in I would have been all for a set spec, for a set time frame, console lifecycle. But since this gen and last we have seen Microsoft pioneer in poor value subscriptions fees and dlc and minimalist consoles with expensive add on I would rather open competition.

Sounds like the PC format to me... see how well its doing for gaming. capcom knows japanesse devs are behind the 8ball, with many of them either to slow to release games or whoring out old franchises that are just average games.

But lets look at this from a wide perspective.
had there only been wii?
yes wii sold like wild fire, but 95% of games worth buying are first party titles only and isnt even hd. No great online features or network, no blu-ray. Not even a dvd player. But still a cheap console. Very reliable hardware. Had it been the only console you can tack another $100 on to the price for that reason alone.

Had there only been xbox 360. Tack $150 onto price for being the only console. No blu-ray, with great online service and the biggest library of good games with highest buying rate for games. Now the major draw back is RROD. They would get played more than ever and would have blew up just as fast. If it was the only console people would probably go back to pc gaming.

Now had there been only ps3. We would be looking at $800.00 consoles (based off what it cost near launch to produce.) Low end may get to $600.00 after a few years. You would have a nice online network (not near what it is without xbox live to compete with), nice library of games (also not near what it is without xbox 360 games being ported to it. Almost the entire first year of games was nothing but old xbox 360 games being ported a year later). Laser would be dying faster and ylod would happen more since the system would be getting used alot more. Like xbox 360 may drive people back to pc because of prices involved.

Now game devs. Could raise price even more since there is no other choice except to pay it. But commong things like no price wars and high end hardware are almost guaranteed. Less than half of the new features since most features are ideas used from other companies. No wii = no move or kinect, no xbox live = crappy psn and well crappier nintendo network.

There is reasons why walmart spent tons of money to try and keep its arc rival k-mart iin business. Even after banks turned down kmart for loans, walmart stepped in and lent them money just to keep their doors open.
There is reasons why microsoft and nintendo didnt run ps3 out the market when they easly could have. Had they cut price by $50.00 2 years ago, ps3 would have been forced out by stock holders sick of losing money. They kept ps3 around because they where both making money at current prices. Take ps3 away and then the xbox 360 starts looking expensive, take xbox 360 and ps3 away and wii starts looking expensive. Its not until we see a bad choice to we take the less of 2 evils.
But thats the nature of choices. Right now we as gamers have the coice to not support a company and still have a great gaming experience on another console. Had there been only 1, we as gamers only choice would be to stop gaming or tuck our tail between our legs and give in.

Or we can go back to where it takes a few grand to make a high end pc gaming machine. Or better yet where 1 console gets named aleinware because its over priced packed with crap you dont need for gaming.

Oh btw capcom, the sharks are circling the waters and their names are google and apple. We may even see 1 or 2 more gaming devices enter the market before long. They arent just watching for their health. There will never be just 1 console.

I hate to tell capcom also, you guys dont have the pull you did 15 years ago. You may wanna see it, but i wanna see night rider cars. That doesnt mean it will ever happen.

Reeves is a COO. So he's looking to cut costs and time. Although it comes across to me as 'We'd like to be lazier and less original'. Capcom's output over the last 18 months hasn't been very inspiring.
No real chance for a unified system - unless it's via emulation, really. Too many 7,8,9 digit dollar/euro sales figures up for grabs. Programmers would probably love it though (smaller dev chain), but users would eventually bemoan the lack of original titles as a result. Yuck!

This is idea is very good on paper, but in practice it will only screw us... HARD! it's just like workforce unions, sure it's nice in paper, but in reality they only serve to defend lazy f*cks who have been in the same job for 15 years, same thing for Human Rights... in all honesty I've never heard of a violation of human rights when speaking of an innocent person. Well there must be a few cases, but when I hear of human righst violations it's always the rights of some rapist, thief, murderer that are being violated.

I digress, not only are we talking about no incentive to lower prices, they'll be no incentives to innovate either. I do like consoles to evolve, though as many might know I'm not a gfx minded type of guy, so I wouldn't really want to depend on the one company deciding it's time to upgrade their hardware... although on the bright side maybe devs will have to work harder to make their games appealing, instead of thinking games should just be "pretty".

But to take that 1 step further add in ps3`s blu-ray and first party titles and you have a all around gaming experience. Thats the complete package of everything out there. It doesnt get better, but its all 3 consoles and yes thats a pricy choice but it was a choice.)

I own all 3 and prefer the ps3. It has the exclusives I actually want to play. The wii has 2 games I actually play, and, I don't pay ms to play online. Its that simple. If all you can imagine is nintendo first party games and HALO to cater to all gamers then you are sheltered.
You want to claim the PS3 has a poor mans version of live and motion controls...but, it has them...in 1 package (and one is free).:p

Most multiplatform games are in someway shape better on the xbox 360 99% of the time.
You combine xbox 360 game library along vs ps3`s then add wii`s to xbox 360 and its clear your favoring the console you prefer. Fact is add move + ps3 price and you could buy a xbox 360 and a wii. You combine xbox 360 + wii sales and you have total world domination in sales. So your opinion holds no facts except that its your your opinion.

Now it doesnt say everyone wont think 1 console isnt the best choice. Im sure people will think it might be. But facts are facts and when you look at sales. Thats why 3 console have did as good as they have this gen. BUt if you cant see how live made psn better, how games loke forza made GT 5 better or how wii motion + influenced move and how both wii and xbox 360 price directly reflected sonys price cuts then you are not only shallow but blind to whats been obvious to just about everyone.

If ps3 was so great then both wii and xbox 360 sales would suck in hardware and software. But thats not the case and its unchangeable. Fact all 3 console are better than any 1. If that is the case why are multi platform games more popular on 360? Why is the general opinion on Move is that its a wii clone that is lacking in a few parts? Why is the general opinion on PSN is that it is 1) more unreliable than LIVE ,which I don't know why people debate this, you pay for LIVE that goes not only into MS pocket but also in to maintenance of the network...anyway and 2) That LIVE has better features and games than PSN, which I will only partly agree with, only because LIVE games are locked to your console and/or Account. And in my opinion Wii has a MUCH better first party library than PS3 Uncharted VS Zelda, who would win? Mario VS Heavy Rain? Donkey Kong VS ICO? or any which way. (I would give Donkey Kong VS ICO to ICO myself, but the numbers don't lie) The wacky cartoon character mascots have been replaced and are said to be "kiddy" now but somehow whenever a new Mario Platformer comes out It DOMINATES sales AND gets amazing reviews by critics a feat that should speak for itself. I get what you are saying but, unfortunately the facts are that PS3 is, most of the time a copy and paste of other consoles features. I remember an article in EGM that showed the "latest revision" of the pre launch PS3 (after the batarang debacle) and it had the joypad and analog stick reversed like the 360 and EVERYONE was like "WTF!?!?WHY?!?!" They listened fortunately. UNfortunately they removed the most innovative and pioneering feature from PS3, but thats a discussion for a different board ;) I would love to see the Xbox 720 have a whole side dedicated to Windows 8 and be upgradeable/changeable, that would be sweet.

You posted a bunch of opinions. You can debate all day which games or features are better. Just because one sold more does not make it better in everyone's eyes. Zelda has been **** since OOT (My opinion) so I will play uncharted any day of the week over the lame and boring as **** twilight princess. also...you are comparing 3rd party titles to first. Maybe you ment exclusives. We all know 3rd party games are important to a console's survival. Why do you think sony dominated the last 2 generations? Yet, there are no facts in the era of gaming. If someone thinks the PS3 is better for them who is to say that this is a lie. Even if PSN is inferior to Live. I do agree that the 360 is a better system but the sales for both are about the same so Sony is doing something correct. We also have to remember that Microsoft is more into the western side of world being an american company so in other countries PS3 would be the better choice... Location is the key.

Also, I would love Sony and Microsoft to combine.

i would love this as:

ninty,ms or sony can:

-still manufacture gamepads or other hardware so we have our favorite controls
-fight for the titlte of the best game on the console
-put alot more time in to development of games instead of focusing on hardware sales
-maybe put some more than a handfull of really good games out there per generation

If you take into account the various regions, the rest of the world doesn't agree with your facts, because they are not correct.
