Xbox 360 hdd load

I have modded my bothers xbox dvd drive with the firmware update to play backups
it work for about a year and now he said the dvd drive seem to be dead.

is there a way to put game on the hdd or an external hdd to boot them from there without the need of dvd?

If you perform the RGH hack you can.
But you will loose the ability to go on LIVE
