The Nintendo Wii has fallen to its lowest price ever on the UK High Street.

Supermarcket chain Asda is advertising a £89 price point for the console in today’s papers. The SKU on offer includes a white version of the machine and two games – Wii Sports and Wii Party.

ASDA has opened the xmas season pandoras box by announcing it is going to retail the new Wii Family Edition (thats the new-version one without Gamecube compatibility) for £89.99 including a Wii remote plus controller, Nunchuck, Wii sports and Wii party.

This is expected to run across the retail industry although some retailers may decide on a £79.99 price point, this once again drops the price of a Wii console below the normal retail price of a basic Xbox 360.

So it looks like the new price combined with some of the best Wii games (Zelda, Last Story, Xenosaga, Modern Warfare 3 and Pandoras Tower) might just give the Wii its final xmas sales push.

The shop has also discounted a number of popular chart titles such as Dead Island, F1 2011, Kinect Sports: Season Two and Just Dance 3 to just £35.

MCV predicted back in May that a wave of sub-£100 Wii deals would hit the UK.

strange how some misguided people still believe that, or at least like saying that to make themselves feel better about buying a console that didnt sell like the wii has, heck this model cant even play gamecube games which, if, as you pretend it would easily do.

lolz i aint bothered that the wii sold more consoles than say the 360 or the ps3 main factor is that it was the cheaper console, but its not as if the 360 or ps3 arent selling either.

just i take games anyday, the 360 and ps3 offers better games than the wii, it isnt just kids games, it also offers mature/adult games which is to me a buying point for a console.

but taking the wii, it cant play dvds, its cant play cds, it lacks media support, its lacks HD support on HDTVs, its specs are basically a re vamped cube so really boils down to a gc with a new controller.

it depends on if you love nintendo blindly or not, i compare the games it offers compared to other systems and i know other systems offer more of what i like and nintendo dont and since the N64 its the same type of games, and can see this already on the 3ds if and when nintendo decides to aparently release these games.

Good price, is this the normal version or the silly stripped down version they were bringing out before xmas?

It is the 'stripped down' version. - No gamecube!

so did nintendo just remove the gc support chips to remove gc compatibility? seems like it would have not been cost efficient to retool the system board.

also thanks billysastard for the great news stories. the site i'm sure appreciates the support you are giving it :) you have my thanks :)

no, this is the new bc chipset for the wii u in a wii like case, kind of a beta test unit (except its fully functional)

and i used to do it before when it was quiet and i had time so just because i got demodded (by zeus) now we are under new management i'm happy to join in again.

so i wonder if anyone will buy this thinking its an acutall wii and would play GC games, to me just feels like a dirty japan knock off that wii see lol get it wii.... ohh nevermind lol

so wonder if people will kick off like they did when sony/ms stoped the BC support and nintendo have done the same.

i agree although they did announce it a while ago, and in reality after all this time would anyone really be buying one of these since you can still buy the regular version if you need it, given that hardly anyone is buying wii's now and unlike the 360/ps3 they are far more reliable (and cheaper to repair)

i do agree that in some ways it does come off as a Chinese knock off wii, i was annoyed with sony because they killed bc before launch in the uk with only 1 sku (the $850 60gb) having bc and even that was the cut down version, my guess is that it was less of an issue on the 360 simply because, well, lets face facts, the xbox 1 wasnt exactly a machine laden with great games like the ps2 and most of the good games there were still work on the slims (at least jade empire collectors edition, forza motorsport, halo combat evolved, halo 2 collectors edition, halo 2 multiplayer map packs, fahrenheit, call of duty finest hour and call of duty 2 the big red one collectors edition all work just fine on my slim).

if i'm honest i'm not to happy about this (or the fact that the wii u dropped gc compatibility) it seems crazy given that the wii is compatible with every other generation of nintendo home consoles (as well as sega, nec and snk ones) through the virtual console but my annoyance with them is the loss of the gamecube ports rather than the bc since that kills both my ddr mats and my family trainer mat, i do hope they will provide a solution to this via usb but i'm not holding my breath, i was annoyed with ms for the same thing when they blocked the ddr mats when they switched from xbox 1 to 360 (but the games ran :().

lol nintendo will probably add gc titles to its virtual console.

i really cant see the point in this version tho, its not as if the wii could do much when it was first launched, nintendo failed to make the remote/games innovative as they claimed only recently added another motion sensor but still the wii estimates your location and isnt accurate.

take kinect ok yes its a big block but thats how nintendo claimed the wii to be, im not a fan of these type of games anyways main reason i dislike the wii because every games is the same idea over and over, but had a little go on kinect and it was more interactive, it tracked your body and represented your bodys movements into the game.

that i was impressed but taking the controller option cant really see my self playing Gears with it, hence the good option of having a controller instead of forcing every game to use that option like the wii has.

i agree they will try the vc route on the wii u

the point is that since its the wii u bc chipset its much cheaper than making the wii allowing an even lower price whilst still making a profit.

with the m+ its 1:1 not at all like it is with the standard wii remote

the wii has a classic controller (or had gc controller) option so motion was never supposed to be forced but after the success of wii sports everyone just had to try it on :(

They were trying to 'report' the first post, because I had $ symbols instead of 'pound' signs for the UK money. -- I quickly fixed the error.
