Console specs still in flux, but sources say Nintendo now has ambitions for touch-screen multiplayer

http://www.maxconsole.com/maxconsole/contents/RKSID00000000000000000261/icon_xl.jpg

A trusted game development executive has said there are numerous indications within the Wii U codebase that the console is, at the very least, being prepared to operate with two touch-screen pads.

Nintendo and development partners had previously indicated that only one tablet controller could work with the system, due to technical limitations.

But Develop's source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, explained that multi-tablet support is one of three remaining variables for the next-gen console. The other two are RAM capacity and processor speed.

The person said Nintendo appears to be on the cusp of solving the technical conundrum of a single Wii U device supporting two tablet controllers. The source added that there was no indication, and very little chance, that four tablet controllers would ever be supported.

The Wii U, which was demonstrated for the first time this year at E3, features a tablet device at the centre of the experience. The iPad-like controller boasts a 6.2-inch single-touch screen, a camera, accelerometer, gyroscope, a motion control sensor strip, stereo speakers, stylus, microphone and a classic dual-analogue button layout.

The console will stream a game's video and audio onto the pad itself and, in theory, allow people to play without the need for a TV. The pad's screen and TV can also work in conjunction to deliver unique dual-screen experiences.

Yet the sophistication of the Wii U tablet has led to technical hurdles in supporting more than one on each console. The platform allows for up to four classic Wii controllers to be used alongside a tablet controller.

Earlier in the year, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata suggested that two tablets playing on each system would also introduce cost barriers to the casual audience.

Develop's source, however, believes that feedback from E3 has been welcomed by the company.

"Nintendo now know they absolutely need to support two tablets," the source said.

"At E3 they didn't commit to this, but they know how important it is to make it technically feasible to support two screens. Even if that affects framerate, as a developer and player, I don't care. It needs to work. Developers will design appropriate games for this. If you're building a quiz game you're not going to give a **** about the framerate."

Nintendo has told investors that the final edition of the Wii U will be demonstrated in June 2012 at E3. Launch is expected several months later.

Seems that Nintendo has one again listened to its potential customers by adding support for 2 controllers, but I am not sure that people wanting this extra controller will still want it if they have to pay out an extra $150 or more for another 'tablet'.

this really annoys me nintendo copy ipad, lol let see them make another FAD with shovel ware games just like the wii, this console should be names iFAD.

nintendo need to start putting effort into the games it gets, start opening up to all gamers, and dont just focus on trying to WOW people with what seems to be a fancy idea but in the end using the controller on nearly every game plus taking the type of games it will get in the end will become boring.

i definately will not be buying this, after my wii lacking reason to play.

how on earth is a joypad copying an i-fad? for a start the wii-u has a standard sd card slot, an hdmi port and 4 standard usb ports and it has those most important gaming devices buttons and joypads

its the basic idea/look of it, its like a pad just this has things added to it.

ill just wait for it to release and will look at the games it gets and will likely be simlar or same as what the wii has.

Good thing they are adding support for 2, although it should have support for 4... Some UNO would rock on it (a digital version never looses half the deck...) also 4 player any sort of card game where you don't want everyone seeing your hand. The only other use I can see really is having a menu screen that you can just touch to use items.

If it supports multi touch it would be kinda cool to use for sniper rifles just pinch to zoom in.

The uses for this thing are kinda cool, if Microsoft and Sony are smart they will include this type of controller in the next machine off the bat instead of trying to add it on later.

i cant really see ms and sony following this type of controller, all nintendo have thought of is including DS type game play, which to be honest will be mainly used to tap to select items ect or the shovelware kinda games.

on the 360/ps3 recently we dont get games which you have to enter a sub menu to change weapon, normally theyre assigne to a dpad, other than that, thats the only thing i can see nintendo using the touch screen for is DS type games.

after the wii im not rushing to buy this, sure seems fancy idea but again boils down to what games it will get, will it be 360/ps3 ports or will it be shovelware or will nintnedo this time release games that arent just based on this ifad touchscreen controller.

id rather save my money and get the next ms console or ps4 because 2 consoles in a row theyve offered far better games and games for all ages.

the thought of using a ds type display worked pretty well for them the first time they tried it and you have to also consider the "nintendo market", the reason the wii was sd was largely because at the start of this gen hardly anyone had an hdtv let alone multiple ones so most users would be playing on an sdtv in a bedroom or such, now everyone is getting hdtv (no choice) it has to go hd but despite being sd most wii's have ended up in the main family room because of the mass appeal of the thing so now whilst the 360 and ps3 are in bedrooms / basements / gaming rooms the wii u will be destined for the main room where the ability to play on the controller will be a huge advantage whilst still retaining the social aspect that set the wii apart this gen allowing it to support multiple pads would allow parents to watch tv whilst their children still played under supervision, i think you underestimate the number of parents who would be grateful they could watch tv whilst their children could still be monitored especially whilst playing online.

maybe i miss something as everyone i know dont have a wii in the living room, no offence but we gather round have some beers and blast on fifa or gears, the whole concept of playing a childs game waving your arms arround like a fruit cake is well ok if you want to entertain your kids, but for grown ups sorry sony and microsoft win hands down.

not only do they offer games that entertain our kids, its not its only option, nintendo are known as a family console, yet only target kids with brightly coloured games and childrent themed and lack anything for the grown ups.

i would have prefared to have had the option to play in HD, 360/ps3 has because they built the console for the future not for the now, so nintendo say you cant have hd because we dont see many people with hdtvs and not think in 3 years time youll be playing our system on a hdtv in cr@ppy sd.

like i hear the wii u is to have a blue ray drive, yet theyre not going to allow you to watch your movies on, now people stick up and think ahhh i dont want a console for that, when in fact its nintendo dont want to pay rights for it, and it proves that multimedia is used and loved on consoles, even to the point that people will fork out for external portable media players.

nintendo is like nintendo giving you something and telling you that you cant use it to its full purpose.

and i know people will say we dont care about blu ray or watching movies its a console, i just know the ammount of money ms rakes in from this service on live.

so, when you have your mates round to drink beer and watch someone play an online multiplayer game what do your family do? i'm guessing that maybe you dont have a partner or children (or both).

and i'm pretty sure that madworld, resident evil, disaster and many more games of that type are not designed for children, in fact id go so far as to say that a good 90% of the games that i play individually or with my friends on the wii are not games designed for children but its nice to have that choice, when i'm on the 360 its online shooters / marketplaces or nothing apart from an occasional blast on forza 4.

and yes, if i want to watch a movie i can stream it to my tv or i can watch the dvd, hd-dvd or blu ray disc on my dvd, hd-dvd or br players, just like i can watch cable tv on my cable box so why on earth would i want to be forced to pay extra just so my games consoles had those redundant features on them, i want a games consle to play games on, nothing more, nothing less and i really couldnt care how much extra revenue a company makes from offering those features, i'm sure they make money from avatar clothing too but i'd really hope you wouldnt consider that a good idea.

when mates come round and were drinking beer 1 the mis's is out and obviously kids in bed, i dont condone drinking arround children, but other than fifa yes the ms's does join in especially horde mode on gow 3.

lets say this, sony add a blu ray player but forces you not to have the option to play movies?? if nintendo want to be just a games console, then they should make it cheaper by adding a dual layer dvd drive as when its released its a last gen system (yet again) and this gen only a tiny ammount of PS3 games have needed the disc space that blu ray offers.

id rather a system that has something, not be limited because the company doesnt want to pay for it, in turn forcing you only to use it as one thing, and we all know people go for what offers more for less.

i mean when my blu ray dvd player broke i didnt have to go buy a new one, hello, my ps3 is now replaced it, would be gutted if i had a wii u and my player broke and had to go buy a new one, all because nintendo wanted to make use of the drive just to save a couple o quid.

At this point in time I would rather replace a cheap BD player then be forced to use a game console to watch movies on. I think BD players are like less then 60$ if you catch a sale.

point i was trying to make is you wouldnt have to pay anything for example if nintendo allwed teh wii u to play blu ray movies you got an extra feature/use for the console.

i mean when you buy a product, would you buy the one that offers less compaired to one that offers more, and adding the ability for the wii u to play them isnt really going to make a massive price increase, its just nintendo dont want to pay the rights for it, heck they dony really bother even trying like they used to, to be one of the or the powerfullest system on the market, they now seem to only focus on fancy controllers that like the wii was the main reason game devs was lazy and just release the same kinda games, possibly because of the wiimotes concept, that only so much can be done.

i know people say graphics arent what makes a game fun, but graphics are what helps pull the gamer into the games world, take gears of war for example sure its a good game and storyline but the graphics looking smooth and crisp like they do, makes the apocoliptic world feel realistic.

or a simpler way, people are drawn to what looks good, heck youd chose an attractive woman over a minger wouldnt ya lol

the point we were trying to make is why the f*ck would you want to? why would you want to overuse a device from a company renowned for its shoddy, easy to burn out lasers (or shoddy, easy to destroy hardware) that you paid a lot of money for rather than using a cheaply replaceale device designed for the job? it would be like me entering a demolition derby and choosing to take the rolls instead of taking a 20 year old escort, yes they would both do the job but which is going to be cheaper / easier to replace?

as to which i would buy, when it comes to consoles the answer is "all the above", but in budget restrained times for some the answer would be the cheapest to buy and run, its why toyota sells millions of cars and bugatti sells under 100 in a year, there is also the fact that nintendo makes games consoles and doesnt have an agenda to promote another of its divisions (you'll note that before dvd sony only had audio cd to promote so didnt include video playback on the psx, something the v64 add on did) sony wanted to push dvd then blu-ray, ms on the other had didnt so just went with the most cost effective format but again without the licence fees adding that as an extra on the original xbox then once they were very cheap they put it on the 360, nintendo have always focussed on "fancy" controllers and have produced machines that run the games they wanted to make, last gen that meant not needing lots of power because they knew that people were still using sdtv's mostly (in fact i read somewhere that most ps3 / 360's are still used on sd even now) and those "fancy" controllers have led the entire industry in every generation from a joypad to analog to shoulder buttons to rumble to motion controls and even the now standard 4 joystick setup (although barely needed on the 360/ps3 since they destroyed social gaming.

graphics arent important in games, never have been, look at super mario brothers or final fantasy or tetris yet all sucked you into their respective game worlds as did early pc games like the infocom range or scott adams adventures. making something a bit prettier doesnt improve its gameplay, newer games should however last longer given their storage space yet they dont, by all means look at gears of war, dodge, cover, shoot at waves of baddies then repeat, i've been doing that since space invaders, sure it looks better and its into the screen now (3d-ish) but the reality is that its added bosses and allowed you to play online, taking out it core mechanic and replacing it with other paying customers by which it lives or dies (i have all 3 in their limited editions), even for those paying customers they largely replaced free maps to download with paid for ones.

in answer to your question, no i wouldnt, i did choose a woman that i was compatible with and wanted to spend my life with and who was interested in me rather than my bank balance, i have enough sense to realise that this years blonde model type is next years old hag and had no desire to hook up with someone who would end up with a face like hilda ogden and tits like a page 3 model, it just wouldnt look right although when much younger and single i'd try to avoid a two bagger (look it up) however alcohol or drugs sometimes meant i didnt always succeed ;)

ok thats fine i mean if you happy paying for a console that has a blu ray drive yet cant play blu ray movies, but is kinda pointless nintendo will never use the capacity of a blu ray disc (its rare that sony even does) so is pointless they should just use a dl drive.

id rather have the option if i wanted to use it to play them, then i can, but cant because nintendo wont pay the rights and theres loads of people that use their console to play movies why do you think sony and ms charge for the service and even other companies make deals to allow rent n watch.

i have netflix on the wii (do not use it), lovefilm and iplayer and more on my br player and tv (do not use it), and all sorts of crap like that on my 360 that of course i do not use, i already have an hd-dvd player, an hd cable pvr, a br player and a dvd player so i'm covered for every video format (inc xvid, vcd and mkv / h.264) and vod if i ever decided to use it beyond what i get free with my cable package and i still dont get why anyone would want to use their games console for any reason other than games since its by far the most expensive and least reliable piece of equipment and so why pay for something you arent going to use.

ok but insted of saying you cant understand why, and accept that people actually do. because you dont use it then others dont??

but whats funny is i see you hate other companies that stop supporting something and hate them, yet accept someone that has something yet wont support it.

still either way, this wont be a system ill buy untill after a good 3 - 4 years after its release, im sick of buying a nintendo system that in its entire console life only has a handfull of top games.

i'm tempted to say "such as" since i cant recall a nintendo console other than the virtual boy that has only had a handful of games worth buying, even when the n64 was getting its arse handed to it by the psx it still had enough great games to make it a worthwhile purchase.

The main reason Nintendo does not include any sort of movie playback is the exact same reason the original Xbox would not playback DVD's with out either hacking it or forking out for the remote. The licensing fee's for movie playback the last I heard for BD was about 10$ per machine, doesn't sound like much money but when you multiply that by 60 million units thats a little over half a billion dollars.

On a feature that maybe 10% will use on a regular basis. The other 90% will maybe try it once for kicks then decide that a dedicated machine just does it better.

I have watched exactly zero BD movies on my launch PS3.... Streaming content from my PC a little but I have switched over to a media center PC for that task too as it just does the same job 1,000 times better. Codec problems? Not on a PC there isn't, everything just plays after you install one codec pack. Surf the Internet on a PS3? Yeah I have done it, for like 10 minutes then I went back to something that does the job way better.

Me I want a machine that only does what I want it too, not 100 things that I really don't want to pay for since I only want it for that 1 thing it does right.

Edit: Before anyone says "but a media center PC is expensive" I built mine out of junk I had laying around doing nothing, an old Pentium D, an old mobo and 3GB's of generic DDR2, an old Radion X1600 Pro and a couple of 160GB hard drives. I just wanted to see if I could do it at first (was a fun experiment) turned out so good I use the thing all the time.

I should put mame on it and configure it to use one of my wavebirds so I can sit on the couch and play some old school arcade games.... *sigh* thats a big download, might as well start on it now... knowing me I won't sleep until I get it working perfectly.

I remember owning a PS1 and then buying a N64 just to play F-Zero X and Golden Eye, good times I ended up buying like 10 or 15 more games (not sure since I eventually gave them to some one who needed a game system.)

I did buy a Virtual Boy too, but I got it on a clearance sale and I think I paid like 30-40 dollars for the system and most of the games, all new in the box! lol Even that was pretty fun and I can't say I regret buying it.

only 10 or 15? (and i hope blast corps was one of them)

you were lucky, it wasnt launched over here so i ended up paying an import store close to $400(us) for mine with an american psu and a copy of tennis, getting other games wasnt easy or cheap especially once it tanked so i was really glad when i was able to pick up a hyper rare flashboy flash card and a collection of dumped roms.

so for the sake of $10 which isnt going to break anyones bank thats my point nintendo are been cheap again releasing yet again a out of date machin that is only got a fancy iFAD to make a hype and mask the fact that since the N64 nintendo has lacked quality games, its more shovel ware.

im sorry if no one can see the fact that the GC was admited by nintendo lacking strong titles, then the reason for the Wii and if you fail to see when you walk into any games shop a good 90% of wii games are purly aimed at children, then how is this a system any 30+ year old wants to buy or play other than the quick 30mins with his kids.

hence no point in buying the wii-U, id rather buy the next XBOX or PS4 which offers games id play on my own, with the mrs, with mates and also includes games id play with the kids for 30mins and even games the kids will play on their own.

i could even prove this point doing survey, that nintendo consoles are a toy for kids and isnt even really aimed towards mature games, i remember a nintendo fanboy that was so far up their arse he wouldnt see that, even in a store pointed every game to him lmoa pokemon isnt a kids game ha ha ok go suck nintendo's c0ck lol tried telling him, nintendo is a toy, proves even more with ott iFAD controllers to warp my poor nintendo fanboys mind into thinking its something soo awesome, he still gets excited over the wii remote dance central hmmm sack o sh1te i sit the remote and kick the thing and if its in time it thinks im dancing WOW!!!

You missed the entire point of that... It's not 10$ its 10$ multiplied by how ever many systems you sell. It's an expensive feature and it can keep a system from being profitable for a long long time like the PS3. Sony had to remove half the hardware of the PS3 before they finally made a profit on it.

Who was talking about the GameCube? yikes even I didn't buy one of those. I owned a PS2 at the time actually several of them my launch unit wouldn't play CD games so it was replaced by Sony less then a week later (That was awesome back in the day) As for 90% of any systems games being aimed at kids so what? If your playing more then 10% of the games for any system you need to get out more and get some exercise you probably weigh 350 pounds or more...

They did that survey already, its called the market. Nintendo took about 50% of it and Sony and Microsoft split the other 50%. Nintendo is a toy, the Xbox 360 is a toy, the PS3 is a toy all of them are very fun. I doubt anyone would play them if they where not.

If you don't think the PS3 or 360 is a toy, then you probably should seek help, maybe take a break from games for a while, come back to them when you realize they are not the most important thing on the earth. They are great fun but remember like anything else they can be overdone.
