A new Jurassic Park game... is this one just for fans?

A Gamer Review by 'Gauss' of the new 'Jurassic Park' Adventure game now available for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 systems.

Returning to "Isla Nublar"

Since the first movie, we've seen a lot of games based on this franchise. Most of them aren't exactly remarkable, but some are really fun and a lot of people consider them classics, like the Super NES/MegaDrive games, or The Lost World for the Arcades (Sega Model 3).

Now, we have this adventure game developed by Telltale Games, best know for their graphic adventure games like Sam and Max, Tales of Monkey Island and more recently, Back to the Future: The Game. This studio has designers formerly employed by LucasArts, so definitely we can call them "Masters" of graphic adventure games. If you have played one of their games, you somewhat know what to expect.

Plot and Episodic Content.

The game takes place during and after the events of the first movie. You will almost inmediately recognize locations, events and various elements from the movie (like the Barbasol can), but sadly you won't see familiar faces and only a few new characters. But, of course the raptors, the T-Rex and some other nocturnal dinosaurs will be there to get things difficult.

I must say that, while the story isn't very compelling, I think it's still a great complement for the movie, and -combined with the gameplay- the game gives you, a very cinematic experience. Although I must say that most of the characters are really forgetable.

The game is divided in 4 episodes. Originally, these were going to be released separately, but at the end and after some delays, Telltale decided to launch them together on a multi-plataform release.

Every episode lasts about one hour and a half, so it's a somewhat short game, but you can always go back to get better rankings. Still, don't expect too much replay value in this one.

Gameplay.

The Gameplay on this game can be divided in two parts:

- The "Exploration" part, where you look around for things and key elements in order to progress on the story. This is just almost every other Adventure game: you examine areas and you move the camera around for clues.

- The "Quick Time" events, which take the most part of this game, where you need to press a series of buttons depending on the screen indications: sometimes you need to press a button multiple times and some other you will need to follow a specific order. This reminds me some of the Heavy Rain gameplay parts, but of course, you should expect something a little more shallow.

The exploration part is very easy. Most puzzles won't require you to think a lot and you'll figure out things quickly. However, with the quick time events you'll need to have almost perfect timing, because after a few misses, you will die and you'll have to start the scene over again and with a lower ranking (from Gold to Silver to Bronze). But like I said, you can always go back and choose a specific scene to get a better score.

Those gameplay elements combined makes a very cinematic game, where most times you won't have full control of a character, and the plot will progress almost automatically after a few tries for every scene.

Graphics and Sound.

The game environments don't look that good, but the characters and dinosaurs models are mostly fine enough. Also, some of the animations are clunky.

Moving on sound, the voice acting works most times, the dinosaurs sound effects are great and the music is nice, it gives you a great Jurassic Park vibe, with some remixes and some new compositions.

Conclusion.

So, onto answering my first question: Is this a game just for Jurassic Park fans? I must say YES.

The gameplay elements makes the game very cinematic, and that's the exact word on how I could define the whole game. Because of this, probably a lot of people will find this a bit boring, because you don't really have control over any character and most times you will feel you are watching a lenghty movie. But you should expect that from almost any Adventure game.

Still, Jurassic Park fans most likely will be pleased because of the plot elements that complement the first movie story, the nice music and the great feeling that gives you returning to "Isla Nublar".

The game is available for download on the PC/MAC (Steam), PS3 (PSN) and XBOX 360 (XBOX Live), and you can also find a full retail relase only on XBOX 360.

Jurassic Park isn't a bad game, but probably will be enojoyed only by true fans of the franchise.

Yeah they kind of blew a lot of potential, could have went with a hunting game like Carnivores or a sim game like Sim Theme Park or a point and click adventure with some FMV rolled in... Anything would have been better then what we got in the past.

This game looks interesting though, not great but at least interesting.

I really liked playing the one on the SNES back in the day... this one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurassic_Park_%28Super_NES_video_game%29

The first person stuff inside was neat and overall the game was pretty good. I still remember how much it SUCKED not being able to save though!

I also had the one for Genesis, and it sucked...totally different game, a sidescroller that was rather poorly done. Very linear, clunky feeling control and just plain boring.
