Whited00r 5, a new application that allows your old iPhone or iPod to enjoy iOS 5 almost full-featured

Apple wants you to buy a new device to enjoy the features of iOS 5 but you as a retro-geek didn't succumb to their will and stayed on iOS 4. All you have got in return was a "This App requires iOS 5" until now...

Some coder-minded folks have just released Whited00r 5 (yeah, they have released Whited00r 4 for iOS 4), a cleverly developed package that allows you to install iOS 5 on your old iDevices including the original iPhone and iPod Touch, iPhone 3G and iPhone 2G, all those devices that Apple officially bannned to get iOS 5. With this, you can enjoy multitasking, carrier unlock with no extra software, video recording and much more.

Whited00r is similar to Android's CyanogenMod and it is basically a custom-firmware (.ipsw file) to install trough iTunes using the "Restore" feature. Albeit it runs very well, there are some services that doen'st run at all, including iCloud and the App Store app, but don't panic, you can install all that brand-new games and apps that requires iOS 5 syncing via iTunes ;).

Download and full features are located at their's website: http://www.whited00r.com/download/

And, yeah, we know, it's seems that today is the "iPhone news day" but we love all those good news! so... enjoy it!

As far as I know, whited00r 5 doesn't actually install iOS5 on your old iDevice (or iOS4 for whited00r 4). What it does is install a heavily modified iOS 3.1.3 (which is the last version that installs on the iPhone 2G), possibly on the iPhone 3G it uses iOS 4.2.1 as a base. The firmware is modded with some unlocks of features that already were present but locked and extend it with Cydia apps that add functionality which strongly resembles that of iOS5 parts. Furthermore, the version number is patched to allow iOS5+ apps to be installed and synced.

Still, these guys are doing an excellent job. And it is the closest as you can get to iOS5 as you can come on these old devices. It wouldn't even be smart to install the real iOS4 or 5 on these old devices. Apple disallowed it for a reason, these devices would be far too slow to use comfortably.
