Revealed during a Nintendo investor's meeting

During its third quarter financial results meeting, Nintendo confirms that Nintendo Network is on the way. Also we will get a new 2D Mario game for 3DS by next year

Nintendo has finally confirmed its online service called Nintendo Network during an investor program today. Satoru Iwata confirmed the online infrastructure is already in place for the service.

They have the following plans:
Personal Accounts for Wii U. Allowing now personalized accounts for its next home console. They will allow multiple accounts per console. "We will also be able to construct and offer the [personal account system] by combining a variety of different services and content," Iwata said. So, no more system based online profiles.

Digitally Distributed Packaged Software. They are exploring the idea to release full retail titles on both the 3DS and Wii U.

Paid Downloadable Content. We already knew this. The first game to offer paid DLC it will be Square's Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.

Iwata wrapped the Nintendo Network segment of his investor presentation with the following statement: "Whether it's our first-party titles or third parties' titles, for a number of games, we will actively attempt to achieve compatibility so that our consumers can enjoy our online services that we will deploy under the name of the Nintendo Network."

In addition to the above, Iwata also said they are already working on a Mario 2D title for 3DS, expected to be launched next year (2013).

We intend to release these various titles without any extreme interruptions. In addition to what you can see here, a number of titles unannounced from third-party developers will be available. Although there is no logo here, we are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year.

With the fulfillment of software, we are confident that we will be able to make the Nintendo 3DS active for the full year as the mainstream platform in the video game market.

Pretty interesting news. Expect to see more at this year E3 in June, and who knows, perhaps even before!

WOW, they are playing catch up. Only 6 years behind.

Behind or not, lets hope they do this right this time.

Behind or not, lets hope they do this right this time.

Shouldn't be too hard for them, all they have to do is not make the same mistakes everyone else made. Add some cool features that maybe the other's don't have and its done.

They better do it right though, everyone already has high expectations...
