This is the first major Vita update, as it adds 'video recording' to the camera, and a fully feature set 'map app' to use the GPS, along with online network changes from PSN to SEN

Sony has a substantial update for PlayStation Vita planned on February 8th, which is right before the system’s Western launch, and must likely will the firmware that will be shipping on the launch models in North America and Europe regions when it launches on February 22th.

The v1.6 firmware is major one, as it improves the camera functions to add 'video recording', and finally the GPS will have a 'map app'.

Vita users will be able to use the map app to ask for directions and see where they are in the world using the system’s GPS sensor. The map app also can show satellite images and has a bookmark feature to save locations.

Minor changes are also planned by Sony like changing the Home button so it glows blue when your system is plugged into an outlet, and of course the online network name changes from PSN to SEN.

No information available let from 'homebrew' developers if this update will include 'security' fixes to finally block the PSP emulator exploits that have been discovered since the launch of PS Vita in Japan and were still available on the current v1.52 firmware.

Cool!

I was wondering about the lack of a Maps application even though you need to accept some Google maps terms and conditions agreement!

Sadly, the WiFi version lack the GPS reciever :( only with the 3G version you will get it!

Video recording would be nice too, hope they add the option of recording 120FPS videos (slow-motion) as I read somewhere that the Vita supports this mode!

And I truly hope they open the US/Euro stores, its getting boring...

And sadly some countries like Canada (my own home country) are not getting the 3G version as no 'cell provider' has agreed to it yet.

I can see it using wifi to locate you too but that will need a wifi hotspot. We will see on Wednesday what it brings not sure I need maps on it but maybe in future AR titles it could be a feature. I did wonder what I was accepting terms for a non feature I could find on mine.

You can always import! ;)

But really, sometimes I regret not getting the 3G version , I wouldve totally used the PS Vita for navigation!

Yeah that was weird at first, but I was able so see some maps in Near application, maps were fitched from the servers!

I was never into wifi hotspot before, atleast here!
You almost ALWAYS have to log-in with something or pay to use the hotspot, i rarely find free hotspots (unless I find some unsecured wifi connection ), but in general, i prefer 3G or GPS reciever over hotspots!
