The company is accepting pre-orders for it right now

This is not a prank. The hoverboard is being produced and expected to be released on 2012 Holidays. It will not fly but glide.

Believe it or not but after Nike's released the MAG Shoes, Mattle's will release the Hoverboard that Marty McFly rides in Back to The Future Part II movie. The hoverboard is a 1:1 replica and it doesn't fly, just glide, but emits cool sounds like in the movies.
But for now, it is on pre-order basis only until March 20th and the final product will be released around November/December 2012.

Mattle's press release says this:

Back to the Future Hover Board: Finally!

This totally awesome 1:1 replica of the hover board from the BTTF 2 and BTTF 3 films includes multiple whooshing sounds and will glide over most surfaces (does not actually “hover” – check back in 2015 for that feature).

We’ll be taking orders for it March 1 – March 20, 2012, and the final product will be shipped around November/December 2012. Because this is such a high-cost item, there will be a minimum number of orders required to go into production. If we don’t receive the minimum orders, won’t go into production and customers will not be charged.

The price will be announced later this month. (Note: Hover board does not work on water.)

And remember, it doesn't work on water!!! You have been warned.

If the school children from the 80s ever met the school children of today... they would get bullied by today's children for being so nerdy and lame.

The colour schemes of the 80s were so uniquely stupid... neon pink, neon green with a bunch of lame generic graphics and designs.

The hoover board looks like a very very crappy & outdated snowboard you could only buy from a thrift store. The only thing that was cool about it was that it hovered...... in the movie... lol

sorry but i must disagree, todays schoolchildren are pampered beyond reason, not allowed out and everything they do has to have a professional risk assessment by the health and safety brigade, a far higher number of them are classed as obese and lets be honest, neon colours are much brighter and more cheerful than todays grey / black hoodies, black hat and white trainers.

Have to agree, todays kids don't even know what a paddle is.... Getting into fights after school or in school or before school, sometimes all three! Those where the days lol

That and half the toys we had when we where kids, lol they wouldn't even allow them today. Lawn Darts FTW!

Do you realize that the hoverboard in the movie was a girl one? Child to say more. Are you saying that today's little girls toys didnt come in that range of colors? Not so sure...
