Download Moonshell DS V1.1: <a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=gotodownload&downloadid=1458" target="_Blank">Here</a>
Download Moonshell 1.0 DPG Tools: <a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=gotodownload&downloadid=1518" target="_blank">Here</a>

Introduction

For this guide I used Moonshell v1.1, Supercard SD, a regular DS (not a DS Lite) flashed with Flashme v5 and a Windows XP PC.

Before we begin I will explain first off what Moonshell is for any users who may not have heard of Moonshell. Moonshell is a multimedia player for the Nintendo DS. It is capable of playing music files (wav, mp3, ogg), displaying text files, displaying pictures (jpg, bmp) and playing video (to play video in moonshell you must first encode the video files using Moonshell dpg tools). Moonshell will transform your Nintendo DS into a universal multimedia player. With that out of the way let’s begin.

Part1

The first step is to download the two files you will need. The first file is Moonshell itself and the second file is Moonshell 1.0 dpgtools. Dpgtools is the video encoder you will need to encode your videos for playback in Moonshell. Once you have downloaded the files first extract the moonshell zip. Once extracted you will have a folder that looks like this:

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_1.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="119" width="200" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_1.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

Make sure you have your SD or CF card connected to your pc and click on the “Setup.exe” file.

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_2.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="119" width="200" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_2.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

This will give you a pop up box that will first ask you where you want to extract the Moonshell files. Use the drop down box to point to the location of your SD or CF card where you want to save Moonshell to.

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_3.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="119" width="121" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_3.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

After this you will have a window with a few options to choose from before transferring the files to your SD or CF card. The top section of the window has four check boxes, make sure all four are checked. The middle section has a drop down menu for you to choose your font and language. The bottom section is for you to choose what type of rom image you want to create. If your using a Super card make sure the there is a check box next to Supercard, if your using an M3 card make sure there is a check in the box next to M3SD. After you have checked the proper boxes click on the “Setup” button to extract the files to your SD or CF card.

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_4.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="119" width="121" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_4.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

After the files have been transferred you will get a confirmation box that says “The Setup Was Completed”, just hit ok to close this box. You now have all the files you need to use Moonshell on your SD or CF card. If you view the contents on your SD or CF card you should see a folder called “Shell” and a file called _BOOT_MP_SC.nds (mine says _Boot_MP_SC.nds because im using a Supercard, if your not using a Supercard it wont have SC at the end of the file name)

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_5.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="119" width="200" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_5.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

Part 2

Now that you have all the files you will need for Moonshell on your SD or CF card you will now need to add some media files to be played. For files such as .mp3, .ogg, .txt, .jpg, and .bmp you can simply transfer the files to the root of your SD or CF card (you know your in the root of the card is when you can see the folder “Shell” and the
file “_Boot_MP_SC.nds”).

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_6.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="119" width="200" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_6.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

To playback video files you will need to first convert the video files using Moonshell dpgtools. To do this extract the zip file called Moonshell10_dpgtools that you should have downloaded earlier. Once extracted click on the folder and execute the file called 'dpgenc.exe'.

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_7.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="119" width="200" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_7.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

Once executed you will get a pop up box asking you what video file you want to convert. First thing you will want to do for this box is to choose your language.

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_12a.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="119" width="200" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_12a.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

Click the “select” button to the right of the data entry box and point to the video file you want to convert (files have to be either a .mpg, .mpeg, .avi, or .wmv).

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_8a.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="50" width="200" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_8a.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

Once you have chosen the video you want to convert click on the “start” button with the green check mark.

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_9a.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="50" width="200" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_9a.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

After that you will get another pop up box asking where you want to save the file and what you want to name it. Make your decision and then hit save. This will start the video encoding process.

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_10.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="200" width="150" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_10.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

Once the encoding process is complete you will receive a pop up telling you that the encoding is complete, just hit the “ok” button.

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_11.jpg" target="_blank"><img height="119" width="113" src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/mc_mshell_guide_11.jpg" border="0"></center></a>

You will now have a video file with the extension .dpg. Drop this file in the root of your SD or CF card and your set.

Part 3:

Now insert you SD or CF card into your Supercard and turn it on. You will have two files listed, shell and _BOOT_MP_SC.nds. Choose _BOOT_MP_SC.nds and hit A. This will launch Moonshell. Once launched the top screen will display the following:

Shell/
_BOOT_MP_SC.nds
All media files you added yourself

The bottom screen will tell you basic control buttons you can use in Moonshell, the date and time, and information about the version of Moonshell that you’re using. Use the the D pad on the DS to select the media file you want to launch and then hit the A button to launch that media file. That’s all there is to it.

Closing

This ends the first draft of the Moonshell v1 Guide. I will update this guide periodically when new features are added to Moonshell and to add things I may have over looked. Enjoy.

Nice guide! Not that Moonshell was difficult to figure out or anything ...

How about part 2 - creating backgrounds?

How about part 2 - creating backgrounds?

It is pretty hard to figure out if you have no idea what it is or new to the DS scene, everyone has to start somewhere not everyone is a techno wizz like yourself ;). Why don't you help to create content for the guide also! Actions speak louder than word haha ;).

I get an an error saying that mp3 ext is not supported. The older version always worked for me fine. Did they remove mp3 playback on the newer versions?

The older versions had all the plugins built-in to the DOL file, now they are all seperate, and placed in the shell folder. The shell folder only appears if you do as the guide says, and use the setup feature.

Yes there is...

The 1.2 beta has a setup feature, and the additional beta(b2, b3, etc) you just replace the moonshell file.

That might be something that should be added to the tutorial. Anyone who downloads the latest beta would have no idea why things aren't working.

This is no user guide, this is Captain Obvious showing you what you already did on your own with no guidance.

If you want something that qualifies as a guide, try making a guide on how to skin it and edit the config file's more advanced options.

REMEMBER ME CAPTAIN OBVIOUS !!!! ? Har Har
Here we go ............ part 1.5

I was having a play with Moonshell the other day, heres what I found out ;)

Wallpaper needs to be 256x192 dimensions in size.
Wallpaper needs to be in BMP format.
An easy way to do this with no special software except M$Paint :p is as follows :

1. I took a 800 x 600 wallpaper that i found on the net and opened it up in M$Paint.

2. Press Ctrl and W together to bring up the Stretch and skew menu.

3. Stretch Vertical and horizontal by 32 x 32, DONT Skew the image.

4. Save it as 24 bit BMP with the filename desktop.BMP

5. put it onto ur SD/CF in the shell folder, and enjoy ur new wallpaper

Heres a few i did yesterday so you get an idea (note filename NEEDS to be desktop)
6404

6405

As for the global.ini, you just put your nice wallpaper on the bottom screen right, but the windows are covering it up, open up the global.ini and find (CTRL+F)
Change it to look like this ;)
[Boot]

; Show/Hide windows. (0=Show, 1=Hide)
; Ý’肳‚ꂽ*eƒEƒBƒ“ƒhƒE‚ð ñ•\ަ‚É‚µ‚Ü‚·B

hiddenAboutWindow=1
hiddenHelpWindow=1
hiddenDateTimeWindow=1

I also wanted to get it to boot a random music track off my mSD, just underneath the ^above^ you will find this :

; Startup Jingle (0=Off, 1=shell/startup.mp3 2=Auto start)
; ‹N“®ŽžƒTƒEƒ“ƒh‚ðÄ¶‚·‚é ‚©‚Ç‚¤‚©‚̐ݒè‚Å‚·B
; 2‚ÅStartPath‚ÅŽw’肳‚ꂽƒtƒH ‹ƒ_“*‚̉¹*yƒtƒ@ƒCƒ‹‚ðÄ ¶‚µ‚Ü‚·B

StartupSound=1

So Logic says that you change this to 2, LoL does anyone know what the Startpath is at all ?

Hope I have helped, Its all straightforward really ;)

Thankyou for such a Brilliant MediaPlayer for my NDS :D
(Now we need a Full-on NDS Filemanager LoL)

BTW no issues converting videos here :P

the odd time DPGEnc cannot detect the playtime length of the original file, if that happens make sure ur comp has lots of codecs for different files and rename the .EXT to something else (that DPGenc supports) then try again ;)

its worked for me.

Guys, I encoded my video with dpgtools and it runs okay.
The problem is, when I watch it on my DS, the length of the video is not the same as the original video, it's like, only a quarter of the length is run.

I have been able to change my videos into .nds files, but dpgenc only seems to change the first 1-3 minutes of these full-lenght movies. When I go to play them back on the NDS-Lite they look great and I'd like to know how to translate the rest of the ~1 1/2 hours of the movies. What am I doing wrong?
TIA, hjb

I had the same problem, it seems the problem is in the codec. Anyways, try batchdpg tool instead

does converting the files make them smaller?
it's mostly smaller because of thelow resolution, but afaik it's not very hardly compressed

since i've installed flashmev7 on my ds lite i can't boot the moonshell direktly from supercard menu. It worked - and still works without any problems whit my passcard3 (holding select while booting the ds) and it also works by starting with DSOrganize.

I recieved my Supercard Lite today. I think moonshell is ace (in fact I'm giving serious thought to selling my mp3 player) but unfortunately almost all my music is saved as WMA. Does anyone know if WMA support is likely anytime soon, or should I just convert it all to another format?

Just convert it. In fact, convert it to ogg, it provides best quality compare to mp3s and wmas

I have a G6 Lite and I can't get Moonshell 1.4 to work. I got 1.3 to work before, but I don't remember exactly how i did it. I remember that the file extension should be .gba and the only way to get that seems to be by using EXSF, but when I run the file I can only get access to some internal file system that seems to exist inside the .gba file. I don't remember using exfs when i got moonshell 1.3 to work. Anyone knows what settings i should use?

Yeah, there are plenty of programs about, even iTunes will turn unprotected WMAs into MP3s. I've got Advanced WMA Workshop, which can batch convert all the popular audio formats from one to another. However I used it to turn a few WMAs to OGGs, all at 64 kbps, and they came out as slightly larger files.
The annoying thing about converting everything is that it takes a long time, so if a WMA plugin is likely, then I'll hold off.

Moonshell 1.4 cannot work on G6 Lite. The only reason 1.3c works is because of custom fat tables built into the program or so I'm told.

I also want to try BatchDPG because the default encoder (dpgenc) produces blocky videos.

But the problem is, this weird tool works in the first instance but if i add a video and want to start the conversion ... it will have a file named mscorree.dll.

Ok i downloaded the file and put them in the BatchDPG folder ... but :( it won't work either ... it claim that i need the damn .NET framework.
But i wont install any Microsoft product further because of the high spying potential and also i don't install a nearly 100MB tool to get a 5MB-Tool working.

So...is there any workaround or other tool?

moonshell 1.41 stable fu-- fudged up my existing v1.1 moonshell that i've used ever since i bought the thing... I've also noticed something extremely strange: v1.1 has far smoother and more powerful video playback than v4.1... why is this? and was i suppose to delete moonshell v1.1 alltogether before i tried to install v4.1? It's just jacked up.

What especially won't work ... moonshell or reading ebooks?

1st: moonshell should work fine
-setup.exe
-select the drive of your memory card
-deselect all cards that you don't have
-..and proceed...

moonshell & ebooks: This means nothing else as reading/opening a text based file, if you expect (as i did it in the past) to open pdf's ... this isn't implemented in moonshell, and i would think never will be because the complex pdf structure and maybe some copyrights.

Firstly I downloaded the whole bundle of Moonshell all 11.7 meg.
I had to remove a few of my games from my 1gig SD card as the moonshell programe would not fit.
I did 'setup.exe' and placed it into my card.
Next I took one of my ebooks that I had to place into 'Word' So I saved it as word.txt file. This I placed into the shell folder on the card as instructed.
When I tried to open it in the DSL, Nothing.
So what have I done wrong?
Was it the word.txt file?
At the present I read my ebooks with my Ipaq 3870. (got 28 books on that at present). That is fine but I would like to beable to use the DSL so I could read books or play games as my mood takes me.

Edit 18 oct. I got it working. but the font size is small. I shall experiment. Also it does not save the place. Any ideas on this anyone?

Having a few problems with the dpgtools11 that came with the latest version of moonshell. I know that BatchDPG > dpgtools but I cant seem to convert videos from Youtube to dpg with Batch, however, dpgtools can.

Ive already converted videos from Youtube to DPG successfully using dpgtools. But this other video I downloaded from Youtube gives an error saying that "error func DirectEncodeMP2_MEncoder" Yet my all previous ones were able to convert.. Im confused

Or if theres no other way around this, can anyone tell me another converter to convert youtube videos to another format - maybe ill just have to double convert youtube --> something else --> .dpg

You don't have to put the whole ~12MB moonshell thingy on you card (moonshell is approx. 2.55MB on the memory card).
Extract the archive somewhere on your harddrive and then:
-run the setup.exe
-select your drive letter that matches your plugged in memory card
-deselect all Supercard/M3... that you don't have and only have selected the owned Supercard (attachment)
-then click on the setup button
-and a nds file (for SCLite it is '_BOOT_MP_SCMS_SuperCard_MicroSD.nds') and shell folder will be created on your memory card
-the optional editing of that ini file is not necessary

and if it will help you (if you own a SCLite): take my posted moonshell from another thread >> http://forums.maxconsole.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=8593

word.txt file issue: are you sure you have selected the file format in the winword save dialog, if not you would have a file named word.txt.doc and if your windows is hiding extensions for known filetypes you won't see the doc extension.
So it's not enough to name the file *.txt in winword! You have to select 'TEXT ONLY' as save type!

Or if theres no other way around this, can anyone tell me another converter to convert youtube videos to another format - maybe ill just have to double convert youtube --> something else --> .dpg
Try VirtualDub ... maybe this tool can open the youtube files wich should be divx and then reencode them to MJPEG, HUFFYUV or RGB.

Hey all, I hope your global knowledges will help me here.
I installed moonshell and it seems to work fine.
The goal here was to listen to movies on my ds, but there's a step that doesn't work. When i try to convert a movier, it tells me it can't detect the total play time. "Oh, fine, but there's another tool available that's better"
Yeah, BatchDPG seems better, but then the error isn't the same, that's all :P
It tells me there's an error and to run the file on a player to check the error it gives and blah blah blah. If it could help, I could edit this post to have the error message included, but I think this should be enough.

So guys? any Idea of what to do in my case?
(I installed avisynth with batchDPG don;t worry, I'm not that stoopid)
Thanks alot!

Boot up your DS holding Select and start, into the default DS menu

Click the Options (Middle-Bottom)
Second one across, Up one, then Right onto the clock
Set the correct time :)

Here is a tutorial I updated and added to on scdev.org which will answer many of the questions I have read on this thread that are missing in the tutorial

MoonShell Tutorial: install, customize, and more (Updated) (http://scdev.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6760)

It covers the latest moonshell, batchdpg, dpgtools and has premade moonshell versions for all carts.

Would be cool if they (the developers) added a function to flip the videos upsidedown. I was imagining having DS's upsidedown on the ceiling of a car or van, then just flip down for TV. Mmm, that would be so cool.

I think there is a part in the Moonshell.ini file that has a part that has something about rotating it. I'm not sure where it is, and I don't have the .ini file with my, so you'll have to find it yourself or have someone else find it...

Here's exactly what I do to prevent lag but keep the quality good. Just simply change the quality/encode time to "High Quality, Slow Encode Time" in DPGTools. It works good for me...maybe a bit of lag in a couple of places. I didn't watch all of the videos I had.

EDIT: Sorry, you said BatchDPG. I can't ever get that to work...

I would actually like to ask a question about that.

I've been able to get a .flv file from youtube (of Naruto actually) and the flv file plays alright and dpgenc even said that it was converted fine. But when I tried to play it on my DS Lite, it said that there was an error. Can someone help?

It would also be great if someone can tell me where they get their .flv file from. I'm using kissyoutube right now, but it doesn't work for other sites. I wanted to try using the addon in firefox since it can download from a lot of sites like dailymotion, youtube etc. but it seems to only be able to get a small part of the video file.

well one thing you could do is record the game (through the headset port) of the "mario" and "bye" and then rename them as "startup.mp3" and "shutdown.mp3" respectively. replace the old startup and shutdown sounds with the new ones and moonshell will play them when you start it up.

Alright I can get moonshell v0.6 and v1.1 to run on my DS lite (totally stock accept for a max media dock and a max media player passme) and v0.6 will play the startup.mp3 and v1.1 won't in the shell folder, but neither will detect my CF card (inside the MMD), with my music on it. Maybe I downgrade the firmware on my Max Media dock?

I followed some advice on gbatemp that worked with my G6 Lite. You use the Moonshell setup and choose M3 SD as the cart. Then patch with the G6 DLDI. I haven't tried doing this any other way but I know that this way works. My only problem is that soft reset within Moonshell freezes everything, and it says:

shellpath: /moonshl
filepath: /
filealias: system
unicodefilename: system/
go to firmware menu. [g6fl]
not support adapter type.

@above: It will work on DS Lite, as long as you have a flash cart that works with DS Lite.

And no, it doesn't need to be flashed, you just need some kind of flash cart.

One option is to use the SUPER converter program. It can handle pretty much anything you throw at it. However, to help debug your specific problem, does the video file play correctly in Windows Media Player before converting?

I don't use WMP to watch them, I use BS Player or VLC Media player and they works fine.
I tried opening one of the files in WMP and the sound worked fine but there was no picture. Do you think there's a connection?

Also, can you give me a link to the SUPER converter you're referring to? :D

DanTheManMS

The point is that Windows Media player uses the same codecs for playing media as BatchDPG does for converting it. If the file runs in WMP, it'll convert with BatchDPG, while if WMP can't play it then chances are BatchDPG will fail. Download and install the GSpot program, then drag and drop the media file onto it to see what video and audio codecs are used for the video. Install the specific codec to your computer so you can play it in WMP, then try again in BatchDPG. Also make sure you've got AVISynth installed.

If you want to give SUPER a try, the homepage is http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html but be warned that it's VERY difficult to find the download link. They purposely make it hard to find, and you'll need to click through several pages to find it. It's a free program, just frustrating to download.

Here's how I got to it. From that page, scroll to the bottom and click the download link. From that page, click "download and use" near the top of the screen. From there, scroll to the bottom and left-click "Download SUPER © setup file" at which point it will finally begin downloading.

I too use VLC for most media playback, just for the record. Awesome program.

Just, what's the recommended Frame rate for my videos? I use default and they get stuck a lot.

It really depends on the bit rate, as well as the quality of the video itself, I would say you should put approximently 25 if you have a half descent video size. A good example for you to base things on is a flash (cartoon) game, that has good FPS is about 13 so you should be looking for around 15-25 if you can. As for your problem, it most likely is the file itself, not the FPS, good luck though! :D

DanTheManMS
08-10-2008, 10:33 PM
I usually suggest a framerate of 20-22 max at fullscreen, a bit more if you have a smaller video. This is with a bitrate of 386, 512 max.

Hey guys, i'm really stuck and would appreciate your help greatly!

I've used batch dpg to convert some movie files so I can play them on my ds but whenever i go to select them in moonshell, they won't play. There is one movie on their that I put ages ago and that works fine (that wasn't ripped off a dvd though, it was downloaded straight off the computer) If i try and select a movie, it automatically starts playing the only one that works.
I used a mixture of programs to get the dvd on the computer (dvd dycryptor) then i used TMPGEnc, BeLight and Batch DPG to get a proper movie file and convert it to dpg format.
Can anyone help me figure out WHY the movies won't play?

Thanks

What happens when you select the movie file? Does the entire program freeze? If not, press Start to see if there are any error messages.

Make sure you're using Moonshell 1.6 or later. Also try using the "DPGplay" program to play back the files on your PC. If they run in DPGplay they should run in Moonshell fine.

I followed these instructions, using a DS Lite and R4DS, and can't get it to work. Here is what I tried.

Tried playing a converted movie using the Moonshell that comes with the R4DS. It says - this type of file cannot be played, or something along those lines.

When I install Moonshell (using the Unicode setting) on a blank 2GB SD card and boot, I get this error:

_DS_MENU.DAT not found

When I add this file from the R4 system, along with _DS_MENU.SYS, the R4DS boots. I see the _BOOT_MP.NDS, but I don't see any of my media files.

When I start _BOOT_MP.NDS, I see the 4 file system options. None shows me any of my media files. The debug log shows a couple of ominous errors among some other log messages, such as:

- not found plugin
- not found mp3 plugin
- MediaType: Could not find a working IO interface

The DS and the R4DS were all purchased recently. The R4DS seems to work otherwise, and my son uses it a lot. Any ideas?

_DS_MENU.DAT not found is a very serious error...just kidding. Redownload the right kernel r4ds.cn and extract ALL the files. The files have _system_, which are needed to run the R4 properly (hardware can't run with no software...like a empty computer)

Yeah is it not a sticky? In which case nobody gives a damn if you bumped it, seeing as how it is always bumped. Otherwise, nobody cares anyway, so.......

Never mind Moonshell. I found DSVideo and it works like a charm.

I'm suprised you guys didn't help this guy.
Tried playing a converted movie using the Moonshell: Try converting the movie at www.media-convert.com.
_DS_MENU.DAT not found is a very serious error...just kidding. Redownload the right kernel r4ds.cn and extract ALL the files. The files have _system_, which are needed to run the R4 properly (hardware can't run with no software...like a empty computer)

slightly off topic i suppose...

SUPER encoder issue
hey, ive seen this issue before somewhere googling around, but i cant seem to find it now. i have just downloaded the SUPER encoder and encoded'd about 10 episodes of mr. show, and a few brak shows (AT THE SAME TIME), and put it on my ds on an r4 III with 4gb sdhc (yah yah yah i'm going cyclods very soon so sue me). well, it will only play for a few seconds and then skips to the next video on my cart. it does this with every episode using SUPER, to which this issue never happened using the dpgtools software.

settings:

VIDEO: 24 FPS, 576KBPS BITRATE OPTIONS: HIGH QUALITY AND 48K CHECKED
AUDIO: 192 KBPS

ALL OTHER OPTIONS ARE AUTOMATICALLY CHECKED OR NO BRAINERS.

any suggestions or solutions?

ok, i've followed the thread and am able to convert to dpg from avi, great...

but, i just realized that the ORIGINAL avi file needed to be played with VLC player instead of WMP to get both audio/video to work (in wmp all i get is audio, and thus on my ds all i get is aduio)

so i downloaded GSpot, per above to see any codecs on my avi file, none detected..

so i move onto SUPER, downloaded that, and will convert the original avi file into .mov file, with h.264/avc as output codec..now i assume once done, this will let me play the avi file on my WMP (both audiot & video), at which point i convert that new file to dpg??

am i missing something, or is it possible to just stick VLC player onto my DS so it can play the original converted avi to dpg files? please help.. thanks much, appreciate it.

The DS is nothing like a Windows/Linux computer, so you can't just stick VLC on it. The DS will have no clue what to do with a .exe file. You have to compile programs specifically for the DS, and so far nobody has made any applications that play more that one type of video file. The DS is too underpowered to playback files that aren't converted specifically for it anyway.

Hi

I've followed the instructions in this post and I can't get it working. I'm using the card above.

When I switch on I select games and scroll through all the games I've got to _BOOT_MP.NDS. I get version 1.1 and details in the bottom screen but the top half has //0 files
IMFS/ ImplantFileSystem ver0.3
EXFS/ ExtendedFileSystem ver0.3
MPCF/ GMAMP/AdMovie/M3 CFI/0
GBFS/ GBFS Flashcard

There are mp3 and dpg files in the root directory?

help!!!

It looks like you're using an extremely outdated version of Moonshell (I think they stopped supporting EXFS after 1.5). Get Moonshell. 1.7x and go from there. If you go to the SCDev forums and go to the FAQ/Tutorials section, the stickied Moonshell tutorial is very helpful.

Of course, don't confuse this with the menu files needed to make your R4 boot in the first place.

to install, yes of course, just download the latest version from the cyclo website, unpack it and copy the moonshl folder and the .nds file onto the root of your sdhc card.

Moonshell is just a DS program just like any other DS homebrew application. It won't help you "format" your SD card or anything like that. I assume you're referring to the slot-2 M3 Perfect or M3 Pro, right? You must have a slot-1 NoPass device in order to boot that into DS mode before you can do anything with DS homebrew, otherwise you're stuck to GBA stuff.

There is none. It's not physically possible to boot your M3 in DS mode without some sort of additional hardware, namely a slot-1 NoPass device like a PassCard 3 or Superkey or something like that.

Yes it is....
I finally found the software, but I can't post websites because of my post count. Anyways, it's called M3 Game Manager.

Good luck using the Game Manager to load DS games on your M3. Yeah, it'll copy them over, but unless your DS has FlashMe installed or you're using a slot-1 NoPass device, then you won't be able to launch them.

If it does work for you, then you have FlashMe installed and you should have stated that from the beginning.

M3 has it's own firmware. It's strictly a slot 2 device, and does not need to have anything on it. You format/copy the games with Game Manger onto an SD card, and launch them through the M3 GUI. There is no FlashMe, NoPass, or any slot-1. You should research before giving people incorrect advice.

You are asking about Moonshell, which is a DS program. As the M3 is a slot-2 device as you said yourself, there is no way to boot it into DS mode with just the Game Manager software. The DS itself will not allow you to boot it into DS mode, unless the DS's firmware is flashed with FlashMe (note that I never said anything about the M3's firmware). Nothing I said so far has been false, though it may have been interpreted as such.

So here's the question: can you or can you not boot Moonshell on your DS using your slot-2 M3 device? If you can, then your DS has FlashMe installed, either by you or someone else who had physical access to your DS. If you cannot, then you will need a slot-1 NoPass device to make it happen.

Please scroll up and look at your original "answer" to my question. Minus anything said before.
I asked:
"I have a slot2 series M3 player.
Just want some software that can format a .nds to play on my M3 player. "
You responded:

You may have misunderstood my question, and I may have misunderstood your answer. But regardless. There IS software that can format a .nds to play on my M3 player. That was what I asked, and you responded to. Of that, you were incorrect. I really am not familiar with all the current devices, although I am much more so now since I looked so hard.
Anyways...

As you did not specify if you had the means of booting it in DS mode or not, I assumed your question was "Is there software to make DS games playable on my slot-2 M3 alone?" in which case my answer was correct since the Game Manager cannot overcome the hardware limitation. However, it appears that was not what you intended to ask, so I apologize for the confusion.

EDIT: To clarify, if you had at any point stated that you did indeed have the means of booting the M3 in DS mode, then I would have mentioned the Game Manager right off the bat. However, all you said was "when I drag and drop the games onto the card they don't work" which could be taken multiple ways. My interpretation ended up being the wrong one, and again for that I apologize, but please be more specific in the future to help avoid similar incidents.

I installed R4 firmware on my Simply, and I'm having problems running Moonshell on it.

I've downloaded the moonshell 1.71 from the R4 site. I renamed the file into _DS_MSHL.nds so it can be booted with the middle icon on the first menu.

But it doesn't load.

If I don't rename the file, but select it from the second menu (just like picking a game) it loads, but it's an older version...

Anyway, please answer.. and if someone has any links for dowlnoading working Moonshell (hopefully with working soft reset) for M3 simply with R4 firmware, I would be vary grateful

Has anyone got Moonshell version 2.00 working properly? mine wont let me go anywhere, been patched with the DLDI for supercard lite and everything and copied the directory, just curious if its a programmers bug or my own mistake

I have bought a supercard mini sd - in order for my kids to be able to watch movies on their NDS. I tried the manufacturer's instructions but got stuck on poor instructions and an error occuring in the PC installation programme. But the followed your instructions carefully - releived to find something that I could understand. Unfortunately, on booting the NDS with the card inserted, .nds files on the card do not appear on my file list on the NDS screen.

I should add that I never worked with NDS or this kind of thing before, but that I am an able PC user, working with programming on a daily basis. Probably some basis thing that I missed and that I do not manage to understand from the material at hand.

Hope somebody can help.

Best regards

Here's the issue - the DS normally does not allow you to boot a slot-2 device in DS mode. Right now, you're stuck with just GBA mode. To fix this, you'll need some sort of slot-1 device that tricks the DS into booting the Supercard in DS mode. Popular options include the Superkey, PassCard 3, Max Media Launcher, among others. If you really want to get it working now rather than buying something online, look for an Action Replay DS, which will function as a passthrough device if you hold Select upon bootup.

Once you get the Supercard booted in DS mode at least once, you can choose to install FlashMe if you wish. FlashMe is a replacement firmware for the DS that, among other functions, removes the need for a slot-1 passthrough device. There are some minor risks involved with FlashMe installation, but as long as you follow instructions there's very little chance of something going wrong (for instance, the very first thing FlashMe installs is the emergency recovery code, so unless you turn your DS off before 2-3% of the process is completed, you'll be fine). It's an option at least, and I would recommend looking into it.

In the meantime, there are a couple of ways you can view movies in GBA mode, but they're not nearly as good in terms of quality. The first is to use the Meteo software, but the major limitation here is that you must make sure the output *.gba file is under 32 MB. At the lowest quality, this means 25 minutes of video max, while at the highest quality you only get 5 minutes. The other option is to use the GBA Media Player software which can view longer video files, and I believe this is what you've already tried. Better instructions for this are available at http://wiki.pocketheaven.com/Supercard#Music_and_Movies

It is pretty hard to figure out if you have no idea what it is or new to the DS scene, everyone has to start somewhere not everyone is a techno wizz like yourself ;). Why don't you help to create content for the guide also! Actions speak louder than word haha ;).

i totally agree, i had no idea what moonshell was even though ive heard about it, i would have had no idea how to use it, so thank you for the guide :)
