GCOS 1.x Beta release. This beta is released now because the other features being worked on have no apparant resolve for the time being. With that being said, all I can say furthermore is.. THE BETA IS HERE. GO NUTS. ENJOY.

Check below... for all the notes on this release.

Oh and of course please grab the file from the thread - and post feedback good or bad on these forums or gamecubeos.com's

GCOS in a nutshell-------------------------------
GCOS stands for [G]ame[C]ube [O]perating [S]ystem.
It's a homebrew application for the GC, which can be used as a softmod or as a bios replacement on modchips. It gives users the ability to run homebrew from DVD, play imports, originals, and legal backups. It stacks up pretty well to many of the modchip bioses, possibly even surpassing them in some one or more areas. And what's best of all, it's absolutely free, with sources provided for many more people to look at or improve. If you paid for it then you have been ripped off!

This release is a BETA, things are of course going to be broken or untested. Why is it out now? Because I am suddenly short on free time again! When will the final 1.x be out? When most of the features in the still being worked on list are done and when lots of user feedback is seen on this release. However, even considering it a beta, it's quite alot more stable compared to 1.5 in alot of ways.


Features-------------------------------
Features that are completed:
- Boots on many setups with the one .dol
- Automatic Disc type detection (iso/multiboot/original/backup/etc)
- Boot .iso/.gcm straight from ISO9660 DATA DVD-R
- Audio Fix (for games like starfox/waverace/zelda collectors)
- New Drivecode
- XenoGC supported (DuoQ untested)
- Re-wrote entire disc boot structure (checks for pre-patched/lidopen etc)
- Modchip detection (bit buggy)
- New GUI
- Disc ripper skips garbage
- Set the language of the original ipl
- Chose between 2 disc/In game reload(WIP)/disable
- Displaying the game banner
- QoobPro Flash Exploration
- Fixed Dol upload code once again
- Cheat Engine (thx Fuzziqer Software)
- Wave Bird issue fixed
- Reboot to qoob bios if you tap reset in GCOS

Features still being worked on:
- Force Progressive scan on games (+Better NTSC/PAL forcing)
- Bump up the speed on the disc dumper (almost done)
- VGCe Flash Exploration + QoobSX support
- Real Time Clock is buggy (time never advances after a reboot)
- IGR for qoob users (since it's the easiest)

Features questioned:
- FTPd (Might go in to replace all of httpd)

Features removed:
- Mp3 support (way too much space wasted)
- Incorporation of an actual AR .dol file to it


Requirements-------------------------------
- A Gamecube
and one or more of the following
- PSO+BBA
- Action Replay
- Action Replay + SD CARD
- Action Replay Max Drive PRO
- Modchip (Viper/Qoob/Ninja/Tmbinc/Ripper)


MODCHIP USERS-------------------------------
XenoGC + DUOQ users:
- To use GCOS please run it through UDOLREL (But don't apply the xeno disable flag as GCOS does this on it's own.. unless you really want to)

Qoob Pro users:
To Flash it as a main bios:
- Flash the .gcb for main bios in the first block to replace the qoob bios.
- Run the update.dol from dvd (as a data disc) if you want to update it that way
To Flash it as a DOL:
- Put the DOL release of GCOS onto your flash memory via USB to run it this way
To Run it from DVD:
- Burn the GCOS 1.x.dol release onto a DVD data disc and run it from Qoob if you don't intend to flash

Qoob SX users:
- The only way to run this now is:
To Run it from DVD:
- Burn the GCOS 1.x.dol release onto a DVD data disc and run it from Qoob if you don't intend to flash

ViperGC Users:
- Flash the .vgc (For either extreme or normal)
- To Run from DVD just burn the normal .dol on a normal data dvd.

NinjaMod Users:
- Not sure if supported - but just update bank1 with the .NJM and it might work


SOFTMOD USERS-------------------------------
MaxDrivePro Method:
- Put the softmod .dol onto your MDP and boot it via the MDP disc

AR Method:
- Please look up samsons loader or the guide at www.gamecubeos.com

PSO:
- psoloadv2 or PSUL should work just fine (use the softmod .dol)

SDLOAD:
- use the softmod .dol and it should work fine


CHEAT ENGINE-------------------------------
The Cheat engine is courtesy of Fuzziqer_Software

NOTES:
Currently cheats must be added using a very dodgy interface but hey atleast they work.
A Cheat DB Loader is planned for next release, so until then, have fun inputting codes :P

Also, please note that cheats must be added one after the other, do not leave spaces or add them randomly

It does run from XenoGC and DuoQ, It has been tested on a system with a XenoGC but the boot method wouldn't matter, that will always work. What was tested was if the drivecode worked with the XenoGC...

After having to answer your questions atleast twice a day on if it was nearing release I have finally released a beta version to get some feedback and this is the thanks I get.. How about you go and do something for a change.. like get udolrel and run it under cygwin.

Worked on GCoS briefly tonight and now XenoGC is supported (DuoQ untested).

I've been thinking about how to do this whole cheat system and one way i've thought of will require a few days to code (then that's if i'm succesful).

The problem about making a release now and one later is that it takes time to make every specific build..time that could be spent coding.. cause there's a few builds that will be released:
- Xeno DVD build
- Qoob/tmbinc modchip bios build
- ViperGC/ViperGCE (both the same build)
- Everything else will just use a simple DOL

On another note.. qoobSX users.. I will need someone to possibly "sacrifice" a qoobSX for the good of GCoS if you ever want to see it supported. What i mean by sacrifice is to run a program that will write over the main flash with GCoS which is risky but in theory SHOULD work.


I See "it takes time to make every specific build.." yes, but I agree that XenoGC/DuoQ specific Build was not take you a lot of time ... FUNNY ! (XENO DVD build ..... What a JOKE !)

If you read before talking, you will undersatnd that for XenoGC/DuoQ users, we have to patch the DOL file with a program nammed UDOLREL ...

UDOLREL is a LINUX appl ! As 90% of users , I run under Windows and don't know a whole s**** about LINUX !

And so .... Im' not a noob in computers ...

Good god, I find the new beta is released and instead of a thread full of undieing thanks to emu_kidid I find it full of bile from an ungrateful idiot because they have to do a tiny bit of work to get it onto their modchip. This program is FREE, he gets nothing for spending hours and hours on it, but without it the majority of us would be screwed at running backups.

Criticism is one thing, but what I see above isn't criticism. It's unnecessary to keep going on and on like a baby. You know the answer to getting it to work on your setup, so but your energies into that rather than having a pop at the ONLY person that works on GCOS.

I for one am delighted to see the new beta emu_kidid, I am sure 99.9% of the other GCOS users are. It's a pity this ungrateful bellend got to the thread first.....

If you know someone able to patch and do a release, let me know ... because I don't think I will find this tomorrow : there are only a few XenoGC/DuoQ users comparate to Viper for example ! (I want to says XenoGC/DuoQ users represent a little pourcentage of GCOS users)

And for QoobSX : Emu_kidid was still working on the way to flash GCOS when he's says having personnal problems, so he don't have finish yet .

My bad, that was copy pasted as i wrote the whole notes.txt in a real hurry and that was meant for qoob pro users. QoobSX users I'm still waiting on word back from the Qoob team regarding SX and flashing files to it.

2. Audio stream fix work well
3. I tried to change game during play, because I believed it was possible with this release, but it does not work for me. I tried the 2 dvd method '2 disc' and 'in game reload', and I believed that the second one allow to change backup game during play, is that true ? because it does not work for me, but I read that second option is WIP, so it's maybe normal. what should happen normally when changing backup game in drive ?
4. Multi game disk detection work well
5. Forcing to PAL 60 freezes bomberman generation
6. I have a lot of dre with 'in game reload' option

1.) It would seem that happens.. but rest assured if you have a Modchip it should detect it :P
3.) Yes reloading is still work-in-progress and it will only work once per reboot (even then still buggy).
5.) Ok.. yep still working on that.

The 2 Disc is for any backups to be able to resume after the lid has been opened and 2 disc games like MGSTS.
Shagkur helped with the Drivecode. There's nothing SD to be tested in the beta sadly.
As for In game Reload, yes I should have mentioned it will not work for multigame, and for now there's only good compat for games from the same region.

I see you've noticed what a task it is for yourself to learn something like udolrel.. or to set it up.

I know how easy udolrel is to use, but I have no time to bother with it. Someone WILL make a disc for Xeno but I know you are diminishing all hope for that and people will want to keep it to themselves.

You know how easy UDOLREL is to use, for someone who knows LINUX OS and co., don't forget that users of your program are not all great coders or profesionnals computers ! (Majority don't know much about Windows so Linux ... no comment)

the only thing you need is the terminal it works like if you type "cmd" in the Start->Run application.

I don't run even linux and I haven't even had it ever installed on any computer I own.. and to show to what extent I went to in order to get udolrel running, I took an old computer out of the cupboard and started to build it only to notice i was short a HDD.. that computer was going to have linux on it for me to be able to use udolrel. I was prepared to learn how to use linux+udolrel and waste possibly an entire day of my time for nothing..

I don't understand why you would expect me to do that.. It's not as if I get paid for supporting XenoGC etc.. So why should I go the extra step myself when the available tools are out there only you are too blind to search?

I don't undersant : I've installed CYGWIN, adding what contains the package to it, and when I go in the udolrel directory, there are only two files : makefile (without extension) and udolrel.c, so I go to the page from GC-Linux site to see the command that I need to use .... udolrel -h seems to be the command that show the options ...

just tried the new beta, the new interface is fine but it's not like i can tell much more about it

pretty much all my backup are on DVD+R and seems like GCOS doesn't like them at all while they works fine with Cobra bios :(
when i boot a backup the drive try to spin (i say try because you can barely hear the drive spinning for a second or so, it doesn't even come close to full speed) 3 times and then GCOS go back to tha main menu

with a couple of DVD-R backups it seems to work just fine

oh, and my standard Viper GC is being identified as "Qoob/Extreme", don't know if this have something to do with my DVD+R problem but it seems unlikely

anyway GCOS seems to be on the right way, it keeps getting better and better :D

Udolrel is in the cubetoolz-verNr.tar bz what ever archive from GC-Linux
sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=98581&package_id=174991

The Makefile contains the information which are need to build cubetoolz. Linux uses the command make, which should do everything you need. I do not know if cygwin works as well cause i've never tried.
The udolrel.c file contains the source code so you'll be able to compile it with gcc. It's usual in the Linux society to distribute sourcecode not binaries. So ./udolrel will not work until you build it
Your problem might be.
1st you do not have make
2nd you do not have gcc installed
As far as I know it might be easier to use Knoppix since former versions should include everything you need, but I'm not sure if they still contain the tools .

Here's sdre.bin which only took me about 5mins to get the dev environment setup on my winblows pc to get that compiled.. nothing is impossible.

gcos boots and i select boot backup.
brings up the text

well I think this happens if the Backup can't be read. I have one disc (burned on a CMC MAG.AF1 DVD-r) which happens to make problems booting and GCOS 1.x shows this kind of behaviour.

All my other backups work just fine

Moreover, I test to launch emus with DVD explorer and it works very well.

Can someone confirm me that I can't flash my normal Viper with this GCOS through DVD explorer (cobra 1.6) and then back to cobra through flashing with an explorer under gcos ?

However i have a few things ;) (I know it's a beta, it's more like i give some feedback ;) )

- Starting up a disc takes way longer then on QoobPro or Viper Extreme bios

- disc compatibility is lesser then the qoobpro
(i have a few games the qoobpro bios boots fine, gcos doesn't even boot, BUT the same games also don't run on Viper extreme bios, so it's not that bad :D )

To say, all games that run fine on Viper Extreme do run the same on Gcos, while game that used to run on my Qoob only now don't work anymore, BUT i have to say those games that don't work anymore where burned on cheap lesser quality media.

* A smaller prob, dunno if it's fixibale for PAL users!:

- PAL games (that support 60Hz) screen is messed up when you choose PAL60
So you have to choose PAL or AUTO and then the game asks if you want 60Hz ;).
Somehow a PAL game booting in PAL on a PAL Cube also gives the 2cm black border on the left. I don't have this when booting the same game on my Viper Extreme or when i flashed back the Qoob Pro bios or on original games.

So a Descent screen calibration in Gcos would be nice for us PAL users :D (ok not that it's that worse ;), but better not :D )

I thought it should boot the game but it doesn't. Fortunetly it boots after selecting 'boot a dvd' (it takes bout two spins to happen). I also tried an ISO with roms and emus that worked flawless on the qoob bios but this time even selecting 'boot a dvd' didn't help. The disc contiunesly spinned and stopped.

I have a qoob pro ofcourse. I'm not a dev or something but maybe it has something in common with that shagkur helped you with the drive code - genesis plus ver. 2006-10-12 gave me some probs with my discs on qoob pro and it was entirely based on the newest libogc.

Mario baseball doesn't have streaming audio, perhaps you have shrunk the image and the files cannot be found.

Is there really a beta ??? I don't think so ! This realease is, as emu_kidid says, more stable in most ways than 1.5 ! This is a beta one, because there was little things to do (not important for me) that it's not completed !

(Then the DVD was booting on GCOM and I was able to select and run GCOS)
What I want to know : there are no reason GCOS won't boot if it's named as bootldr.dol ?!

Some things I've noticed on my Qoob Pro

-DVD+R's definitely do not work (All my games are on DVD+R's:(:()
-The bottom textbox which reads in the qoobpro demonstration video "PAL Bios Revision 1.0 etc, etc etc" is cut off on my NTSC Sony Wega

And to everyone else, thanks for the constructive feedback. One thing I've obviously noticed is that DVD+R isn't working and this needs to be looked at. I can see how it was missed considering I only have -r to test with.

as i wrote before my standard Viper GC is been identified as "Qoob/Extreme", it's definitely not a big deal but maybe you can give it a look after you're done with everything else

If you don't have a programmer you won't be able to flash the cobra bios to it with the addes support to flash from DVD ;)

So you get a programmer or you let it program somewher to latest Cobra, then flash gcos from dvd-r.

I thought today is a good day to patch, even my server @ home works again (windows repair-install). Here are two patch-versions for our friend Kyo13. Filenames should be selfexplaining:

gcos_1x_udolrel_patched.dol -> without any option
gcos_1x_udolrel_patched_with_-x_option.dol -> with -x option

And today is another good one for me cause i get a crossover cable so I can test the new gcos myself too :D

sorry to read, no dvd+r support as I have several of these too :( but well it's beta and that's what they are here for. I love bugfixing.

I've burned the last DVD included a maximum of differents DOL :

-Gcos 1.x Udolrel patched without XenoGC disabled (not yours from the other XenoGC user) -----> Blackscreen (on XenoGC and DuoQ)
-Gcos 1.x Udolrel patched by you ---> Black screen too !
-Gcos 1.x Udolrel With XenoGC Disabled by you ----> Don't launch ! (I don't know if it's because I give him a too long name or if it doesn't work, named I give Him : "GCOS 1.x Udolrel (XenoGC Disabled).dol" all others have similars long name but it's the most long one !
-Gcos 1.x Softmod ---> Just the release not patched --> boot and freeze after drive routine (normal).

So ... can't test anymore, I'm gonna share the files with others XenoGC/DuoQ users that want to test but I don't think that will work !

PS : To not have blackscreen issue on boot DVD, I've used Gcom 2.4 as bootldr.dol then add all others Gcos dol !

To resume HOPEFULLY this is a very easy patch to do ! looool

And naturally this time this is a real bad feedback using the described method !

the actual apploader in the cubetools project should load any dol file, als long as it resides over 0x80000000 and under 0x81200000 where the aploader itself resides.
So the question is: did any one actually test it with the original GCOS on a DVD or did everybody rely on the documentation for the cube boot tools, which need not necessarily correspond with the actual source.

The modification that made emu_kidid on GCOS aren't make it work without patch, when GCOS need to inject drive code, always the same ... freeze

So emu_kidid you want to say that the actual Gcos will in any way be succesfully patched with Udolrel if I understand !.... Don't want to say one more word ...

LibOGC 2 Disc Beta Booted my DVD+R's fine, As well as GCOS 1.5

1.x Doesn't seem to boot any of my DVD+R's which kinda sucks for me due to the fact that all of my backup's are burnt on +R's... :(

It just seems like a different Boot Sequence than the LibOGC 2 Disc Beta, that tried the disc and the laser moved around until it read, with 1.x it just seems like the DVD Motor doesn't even get up to full speed before imeadiatly giving up. I hope this helps some debugging issues...

Hi all.

First of all, thanks emu_kidid for releasing a beta, I know how much you hate to make several releases.

I use XenoGC but load the dols trough SDLOADER.

1_ I can't load games, tried:
a -R, no banner shows, a green screen appears and hangs.

another -R, banner shows, game name is garbashed, green screen appears but loads, after a few seconds GC hangs.

AR 1.08 disc, correct banner, but appears "NHL HITZ" as description, green screen and hangs.

2_ Strange "Drive 20020402 Ok!" legend appears when reading disc
I have a model 04 Drive.

3_ Chip detection seems to not work, it says (Qoob/Extreme) instead of XenoGC
modchipPrint() only has "Modchip: (VGC/Tmb/None)" and "Modchip: (Qoob/Extreme)" so I guess this is ok.

4_ Loaded klaus40400's UDOLREL patched DOLS through SDLOADER; both makes a RED SCREEN with "Gamecube Exception" message appear.
(I´m guessing this is SDLOADER doing, cause it lets retry loading a dol after pressing A)


Hope this helps at all.

You always flash a modchip, not the GC !
So, if you flash your Viper with GCOS, you won't have access to Cobra bios anymore, unless you re-flash your Viper through the parallel pc port.

The only method to access the Cobvra bios is to launch GCOS like a .DOL homebrew ;)

you can flash GCOS to your Viper GC but once you do this you won't be able to switch back to Cobra neither to update GCOS with a newer version!

without the programmer you have to rely on the ability of the installed (installed on the modchip) bios to flash the chip's memory.
Cobra bios can load a new bios from DVD and flash it to the chip memory (basically self-overwriting).
GCOS doesn't have this feature yet!
so if you use the standard bios (i guess it's the bios that can only flash the chip and not boot backups, this one (http://www.viper-chip.com/gfx/fscreen1x.jpg)) that come with the Viper GC to flash GCOS, once you do this you won't be able to flash any other bios... being it Cobra, a new version of GCOS, whatever (without using the programmer, of course)

if you ask me, in your position, i'll flash the latest Cobra bios or i'll get the programmer, in case of a bad flash you'll need it anyway

PEtiton : Well , i have a little petition. I use the SD+AR system. I will apreciate a utility to copy de GCOS.DOL to the second Memory slot (Where i place my normal memory card). Im sure the people with broadband adapter have ease to do this, but i don have one and my sd adapter is homemade and sometimes fails.

If i can copy the GCOS dol to my memory i will put it in the slot 1 to boot an to save the games.

NOTE : I have note some dvd+r have booted. I think is because nero has changed the code of the media. If this posible ?

I can't flash my viper anymore since the last gcos. That stupid adapter that came with the chip to hook up to the pc died after it's 1st use. no doubt that horrible silver cable it came with. GCOS is looking nice though! My +r's aren't working so well now but hell, I'll go get a spindle of -r's and copy those titles over, no big deal. Now I'll sit back and wait for someone to code my viper's sorry ass an app that will let me flash it again. Basically a .dol of cobra would do the trick or whatever, but i'm no coder :D WTF do I know :D

You need dolLZ 3.0 and name it d0lz and have it in the same dir as the makefile.

Thanks for this. The new menu looks nice.

So i dug out the gamecube (pal revision 1 drive model 6 if i remember) and tried this using pso and.... nothing. Every single one of the disks i have just returns to the main menu after pressing A. Various types of minidvd, most of which have booted and worked fine before; also tried pal, ntsc us and ntsc jap games all to no avail, and tried various region settings too. Sorry, always thought gcos was great but for me this is just a pretty menu at the moment!

I am curious as to whether you will still be able to use the pso hack on the wii since it has full gc compatibility......

Well..i used the new GCOS a few days, and its the best out so far.
It also detects disks in no time. Previous GCOS were slow or didnt detect disk at all sometimes except for GCOS 1.4.

- The Cheat engine works too as i tried that for fun on both PAL and NTS games.
- Force 480p works nice for both PAL and NTSC.
- Multigame discs have nicer menu now.

I dont remember much else i tried so far.

I would say that this new version is a good improvent and is by far the best GCOS out yet.

Well..i used the new GCOS a few days, and its the best out so far.
It also detects disks in no time. Previous GCOS were slow or didnt detect disk at all sometimes except for GCOS 1.4.

- The Cheat engine works too as i tried that for fun on both PAL and NTS games.
- Force 480p works nice for both PAL and NTSC.
- Multigame discs have nicer menu now.

I dont remember much else i tried so far.

I would say that this new version is a good improvent and is by far the best GCOS out yet.

So 480p Works? Are you sure? because that was left untested.

Let me learn you something : as I've said before, this is not my vision of hack, I'm not a coder, but know a little about modding, I've helped many people who don't understand nothing about this, and NEVER get a cent for this ! For example at the beginning of PSP hacking, I've helped people that were totally NOOBS on the question, downgrading their PSP from MSN !!!!

For explain : at the star I went and talk to emu_kidid about XenoGC/DuoQ problems, tell him that I saw on the net, that a program named Udolrel can patch his program to make it work for XenoGC modchips, unfornutally (as I tell him), this is a Linux appl and I don't know anything about Linux (so don't run under). The next day, emu_kidid said something like that : "I've worked on XenoGC support and now it works !".

I've thanks him and I was pressing to test it ! But emu_kidid has another things to do so I've do like everybody just wait.
At the release day, I exult, downloading the beta release to see "XenoGC/DuoQ users patch file with Udolrel before burn" ...

I did some testing and with my PAL cube it (still) does not work.... it shows a very garbled green screen with Sonic, and another one tries to give a signal, but it just is not enough to let it show anything on my monitor. So I would be very surprised (as well, I presume and guess).

You're using DVD+R most likely. This is a known bug.

I've tested Gcos 1.x and there is my reply after 1h of testing many games:)
1- nice new skin.
2- some bugs on boot.(green screen)
3- some games don't boot (return to menu) but on 1.5 work good.
4- 2 disc work good (3 games - MGS , Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos 1)
I dont use anything else like bba (ip and others ) and cheats than I will not write about it.
but I think that gcos 1.5 was better to read some worst media of course dvd-r.
I will check new gcos and I will reply another opinion:)

Good release, WaveBird works without pressing any key on power up console.
Faster loading, ....etc.

BUT.
LegoStarWars II (PAL) does not work (on loading I get down-right letter "ISI") and than system stop responding, .... other games works but with green splash for 1 sec beafore load actually is done.

I checked my LegoStarWars II, ... works great with GCOS 1.5, I also try to fstfix image, burn on another media but no luck. All other games I try works good on same media I use (Verbatim, Memorex and Dysan all Mini-DVD-r).

I now have few copyes of LSW II, so if you Emu_Kidid wonna try to fix that PM me and give me your adress so I'll send you my extra copies.

Pal GameCube with Viper Extreme, Drive 08, POT is set to 175 ohms.

just some things I wanted to ask and report...
I've got a 20020402 PAL cube with SDload

1. I can't seem to find the option to switch games or "disable" the function
2. When I check the status it always reads "Disc swap" enabled before and after I've applied the 2-disc setting
3. At least on the 10 games or so I've tried 1.5 or the previous 2 disc beta work much better (unless I apply 2 disc). with 1.x most games freeze or dre maybe 5 times more than with the others. (note: these are games that are very load heavy [streaming stuff constantly e.g Rouge Leader] that dre on all softmod OS:s). On "working" games with 2 disc enabled it is more or less the same.

4. just some small gfx stuff with the gui that you probably already know about.
a) long names of games wrap around the screen begining "outside the box" to the left.
b) multi-game discs: during selection black bars appear to the right of names that are not selected
c) as noted by others: I get a moment of green-screen after starting a game

probably were a couple of other things as well but I've forgotten it by now...

anyway, I really appreciate all your hard work. Its nice to see someone doing some work on cube software these days.

Well no it's about the Xeno issue again.
I tried GCOS out on my xeno (not udolreld, loaded via SD, AR+Memcard and via GCOM) And i always had the same result. GCOS boots, but freezes on the welcome screen. My guess is it tries to mount the current DVD but fails.
When leaving the lid open GCOS reboots to the original IPL (very cool indeed, but not quite what I hoped for)
Well my question is: in what way should the XenoGC support work. When should gcos normally disable the Xeno, and what the heck am I doing wrong (and no I did not want to audit the whole the source code, thank you).

udolrel'ing should only be needed when creating a boot DVD, right? Or am I missing something here? (except a brain, thank you)

I hope to see Xeno support in GCOS, despite other people attempts to make it sour.

well after playing around with the source code of GCOS (and I mean playing around quite literally, as I have no idea what I am doing) I found out, that commenting out

line 160 in main.c: request_irq(IRQ_RSW, reset_switch, 0) // RESET SWITCH

actually allows GCOS to boot on my xeno via above methods, and even lets it start a couple of my backups (I only tested 3).
So uhm? wth? Oh and it seems to disable my xeno correctly, because it looks realy disabled (no red or green LED on)

I have the same problem of macchinmi but this method don't work for me. The drive spinning without message on screen. If I try to open the lid, gcos returns in the root menu.
My games work on gcos 1.5.

I'm using max drive and dvd-r ritek G05 full size burned with nero 6 at 4x speed.

Well just one sugestion ... include in release GCOS 1.5 boot method (and/or drive code) like in 1.5 release with 1.4 boot method .... so torublesome games will work without reflashing Cube.

Gcos 1.X doesn't boot dvd+r and games on cheap media. 1.5 can boot those, but that is not a problem 4 me:) it's only review:).
another thing is ISI message on the right-down corner when I boot Rainbow Six: Lockdown and gcos freaze.
splinter cell 2 works bad on 2 of 3 boot's (some bugs in bottom of the screen (like in commodore 64 loading :) ) and game works veeery slow...I don't k'now whats the matter:)
another bad thing is that green screen after boot and other colors (like in commodore 64 on loading the game :) :) ) thats not good 4 me, sometimes it freaze for 4-10 sec.
and that screen where You boot game.everythink is almost all right, but sometimes name and label of the game goes out of the screen. maybe if someone will change the size of text (to smaller) that will erase the problem.:)
and that's all 4 now:)

I have been trying to program Ninjamod Bios 2 with GCOS 1.x, but it won't work... Any ideas what can be happening? I burnt it the same way I burnt Ninja updates with no luck -ISO dvd, just the update .njm file-.

ok keeping the lid open when selecting 'boot dvd' did the trick in booting my ritek g04 mini-dvd-r discs again... it asks to close the lid and off they go...

...but i still can't witch discs in tales of symphonia... the disc just sits there unaware of any lid activity...

so no way to switch discs with my viper unless i change the wiring then right? or is there another way? not looking forward to opening it up ;)

Just installed qoob pro and flashed it with gcos 1.x, everything running fine when i load up a burnt game, but then when you've been in a game for a while and usually when its loading the next part of the game, the laser starts clicking and then the game stops playing and it says theres somethign wrong with my gamecube...

I'm using TDK DVD-R's, but i don't see how the games would only work half the time, either it would read it or not.

Is there a fix for this? I'm tryin to get this gamecube ready to give to my girlfriends little sisters for christmas so any help would be appreciated.

I use GCOS + PSO and dont notice any problems on any game.
It had been nice if Emu_kidid would put back support for DVD+R thou like it was in older GCOS releases.

Newest GCOS is awesome...and DVD+R support would make it perfect for me :)
My laser is correctly adjusted for most DVD-R and DVD+R. +R discs works great in GCOS 1.4..but i get DRE sometimes in that one. :(
I used 187ohm for over 1 year...it was originally 460ohm.

the link i showed does have a memory card included for the cube+SD media adapter to fit in your Cube's memory card slot. and a 1GB SD card + USB adapter for the wii console and the CD to boot on your gamecube/wii it supposedly works on the wii aswell... i did search on this website but the tutorial has been removed for some reason.

So, with that SD Media Launcher, u just put this gcos softmod version where u would put "homebrew" program in that sd card, then u can boot backup DVDs with that.
And about media, i just bought this:

And i have seen around that, ridisc G5 is the best, i have tried it myself too, and it works.
And some media works better many times when u adjust the only one potentiometer in dvd-drive's backside in range 150~350 Ohms.

i don't want to remove my gamecube case, i have found some mini DVDs they are SAMSUNG Pleomax Mini DVD 4x speed i am unable to find any other media because most websites don't sell ritek media in the UK (or don't sell mini DVD's at all!) so i am very restricted to what i can buy + they are expensive for even a few disc *gasp*. i have a gamecube version D0l 001 (first generation) will this work with my cube? I've read that this version of gamecube is very fussy with what media it likes, how is compatibility with the soft mod anyway, do games play at full speed similar to normal gamecube games?

Installed GCOS 1.x beta a few days ago. Looks much more stable than cobra.
Thank you emu_kidid for putting you effort in this.

Using Platinum mini 4x DVD-R RITEKG0401 (best),
Platinum mini 4x DVD-R CMC MAG. AF1,
and Traxdata 4x mini DVD-R RITEKG0401.

So far, after playing about two afternoons, I encounter only 2 freezes and one DRE. And that at points in the games that cobra was giving DRE's very frequent.

I hope you find some time to improve GCOS even more.
Or do we have to switch to WII to enjoy your coding in the future?

i am still trying to make games run from GCOS. the boot original DVD worked for originals but with backups I had no luck booting it from GCOS.(ver 1.5 btw). It always hangs at 'setting up 04 drive'.
other than that backups work normally on qoob SX -bios i.3c

Sorry, I'm a complete n00b to this thread, so hope there's no disturbance of any sort, and hope to catch up with what's going on....

First of all, I just wanted to thank emu_kidid for this bios, it's awesome!

I've had an NTSC BIOS Revision 1.2 Drive 08 machine chipped with the Qoob PRO for a while now, and since I don't have good quality blanks, or a broadband adaptor, I haven't been able to test backups I've downloaded on the machine yet - in the sense that, I haven't seen a backup run yet.. so I'm a little concerned, and am waiting for the blanks and bba, hoping to get them soon...

I was, in the mean time, trying to figure out how to get 2 disc games to work properly.. the Qoob Pro 1.3c bios states that it has multi-disc support, but didn't work at all... so I tried loading up this bios, which has a great amount of features (I've stopped using my Qoob Bios' altogether now)...

I tried my copy of Killer 7 as a test to see whether the Disc Swap feature worked in this BIOS... I tried loading disc 1, and then a save on disc 2, so I can easily reach a point in a game to test where you need to swap the disc... and I tested this both as an application on my chip, and as the main bios...

When I tried swapping discs at the swap point, as an application, and as the main bios, it just says "DISK COULD NOT BE READ. REFER TO GAMECUBE MANUAL FOR FURTHER ASSISTANCE." when I close the lid...
When I try the disc restart method, I just feel my pad vibrate once when I close the lid, then the game doesn't progress... from what I can predict, the disc looks like it's spinning, and the lens mechanism is moving, but the lens doesn't switch on red...

I was just wondering if someone could help me fix this issue... perhaps I might be doing something wrong... or maybe a cable might not be soldered on the board properly, and this could be a symptom...

** EDIT: Was testing the real time clock... the clock works on the first boot.. and then every time you reboot from that point on, the clock is set to the time of the initial boot of the first time... The clock at the top of the screen doesn't move, and in the system info, it moves... oh, and if you go into the original IPL to set the time, when you load up GCOS the next time, it uses the new time you set.. so if you want a constant clock, you have to go into the original IPL each time you boot to adjust the clock... just wanted to post that, in case it might help with discovering the issue... **

Well, I haven't gotten GCOS to restart any disc I close the lid with.. but I managed to get the Qoob Pro 1.3c Bios to do it... I turned off "Disc Swap" in the menu, and now, when I open and close the lid, it works just like the original IPL... I tested with an original, haven't tested with a backup yet...

Someone else commented on the laser optimization but I elected just to leave my gamecube on for an hour prior to use. Drastically increase success but still not perfect.

if not then I could put the sdload AR code in with the game codes that I want to use, and load them both under one "game heading" in the AR list maybe, very maybe.

Thanks these boards are a lot of help, and if your having trouble after getting GCOS to load then try a different gamecube and make sure to retry 3-5 times on the boot dvd option. But Nintendo knew the laser limitations necassary to boot DVD-r (harder than pressed DVD) so this is why NGC disk are so touchy (worse than DC discs).

just did the laser optimization, and now things are running better than ever. Some people are keeping tabs on the potentiometer readings so here are mine. When I first hooked up the POT to my MULTIMETER it read 250 now it reads like 187. HUGE difference in playability. Still a dre at least once every 24 hours but for what it is I am happy with these results.

The guide I found makes little reference in how to take the NGC apart but if you can't figure it out then you probably shouldn't be doing this. all I needed to know was where the POT was. I had it apart and back together in under an hour.

I had to order the CASE BIT off ebay for like 3 dollars american.

any updates for a new GCOS? Everything is perfect, but better cheat code support would be a great help to me, and memory save archiving (as of now I am not sure there is a way without the AR max media. Other than that GCOS 1.x is fine.

About the laser, since the pot "lives" little, it needs little tweaking sometimes, so u could replace the pot with resistor with same resistance. It would be a permanent solution.
