As soon as I read that the Qoob background could be changed I just had to go and customize my own. Here is a quick and simple one that I produced in Paint Shop Pro. The only time consuming part was finding out where the black text bars were overlayed over the picture.

Nice, how do you use them on the qoob?

Use the 1.3 flash software, and select file type "Bootlogo (*.MVI, *.MPG, *.M1V)" and your background, and then flash it to an empty slot.

Heres one that I did testing the converter, it's from an old mockup that someone did of the Revolution. It's not very cool, but I thought that I would upload it anyways.

Heres what it looks like on the TV(sorry about the bad picture, and the purple bar on the bottom is from the lines that show up when you are looking at a TV through a camera)

These .m1v files can be renamed to .mpg so you can view thumbnails in a folder.

Hi,
I've put the background mpg into a free slot but my bios is still the orignal bios screen.
What am I doing wrong ?
Thanx.

With the flashing program, did you select background as the file type, or did you select all files? You are supposed to select background.

If you have an image that is being stretched vertically when it's on the Gamecube here's how to fix it, and it's easy. In photoshop (or another photo editor) resize the image to 90% height, then resize the canvas back to the correct size (640x480).

Hi, i made another version of your Background for me. But now there are so many white pixels and i cant get them away. gan you tell me why? The white pixels are mostly on "Siedlungsshow", "goes" and the qoob-sign.
I added my Background, so you can download it and see, whats wrong with it :) Please help me.
JohnnyTwoHats
05-17-2005, 12:07 PM
I couldn't actually find the white pixels you were talking about. Did they only appear once you encoded the picture to MPEG-1?
In any case, I re-made your picture using the original graphics and encoded the M1V. I also tested it just to make sure it didn't have those white pixels, even though they did not appear when I encoded the background that you posted.
Hope this helps.

i made a lil cheap bg
http://www.die-webtools.de/bildhosting/mai05/377815e7b06f19fdc889984456bb65d2.jpg
oh i noticed it isnt displayed in colour on my gc hm im tryin to fix that
-sry i dunno how to fix that problem but my cube doesnt display the colours on the picture, anybody know how to fix that ?
JohnnyTwoHats
05-20-2005, 12:24 AM
It sounds most likely to be a NTSC/PAL problem. I tested out your backround on my cube and it displayed perfectly in colour (cube is PAL and TV is PAL/NTSC). The only thing I can think of trying is changing the qoob video mode in the configuration menu to see if that fixes it.
snafro
05-20-2005, 07:15 AM
umm im gonna try that, its strange cause i have same setup as you (pal cube + pal\ntsc tv)
edit: tried every video mode, nothing works
edit2: i fixed it by plugging the three lil cables (red white yellow) into a scart adapter. i had the gc connected to the side-av port.

I just realised that all my background links were dead. For some reason, it seems my freefilebin account folder decided to pack up and depart the server. All the links have now been changed to a new file host and hopefully will remain in working order.

The thing is though, you can only attach one file, which is very annoying. If you could add 2-3 attachments to one post, it would be used a lot more, rather then us hosting our own files.

Here is a relatively straightforward step-by-step tutorial...
Download TMPGEnc 2.524 (free version)
Official Site (http://download.pegasys-inc.com/download_files/TMPGEnc-2.524.63.181-Free.zip)
Alternate Site (http://www.uni-weimar.de/~richte10/progs/dvd/TMPGEnc-2.524.63.181-Free.zip)
Download my Qoob background template
http://www.myfilestash.com/userfiles/JohnnyTwoHats/QoobBackground.zip
Unzip TMPGEnc to an appropriate directory (it doesn't require installing) and then copy the template, QoobBackground.mcf, to the TMPGEnc Template directory.
---Making and encoding the background---
- Make your background using any number of image editors (Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Paint, ...). Ensure that the size of the image is 640 x 480 and in either bitmap (*.bmp) or jpeg (*.jpg) format.
- Start up TMPGEnc
- If you haven't run TMPGEnc before, a dialog box will initially come up. Select the "Do not show this dialog again at start up." checkbox and click ok.
- You will initially be faced with the project wizard. Cancel this to get to the main interface. If it asks you whether you want to reset the project, click ok.
- Click the ES (Video only) radio button.
- Click browse next to the "Video source" text box and select your *.bmp or *.jpg background file.
- Now click the "Load" button in the bottom right corner and select the QoobBackground.mcf template.
- If you wish, you can change the output file name and directory path, but this is not necessary (by default it just uses the path and filename of the image file and appends the extension m1v).
- Click the top left "Start" button and your *.m1v file will be encoded.
- Flash it to the Qoob.
- Enjoy!

Thank you Johnny for the BIG help!
I have one question though, is it possible to remove the black background around the qoob texts and instead let the white text lay over the picture?
And i´m sorry for my bad english. I hope you understand my question.

No, you can't. Though I must agree that it would be a lot nicer if just the text could be overlaid over the backgrounds.

Is there any way to do an m1v file with more than 1 frame, to make it animated. To have like rotating or moving logos, or color fades.
Like Evox has in Xbox
JohnnyTwoHats
06-02-2005, 12:19 PM
I haven't tried it, but I doubt that it would work. I think the background implementation is fairly simplistic at the moment (not that I am complaining, it makes it a lot easier for a basic photoshop user like myself to make backgrounds).
EDIT: I just tried a m1v with 5 frames and it only converts the first frame to use as the background.
pixelhub
06-02-2005, 01:18 PM
That’s a shame, it would have been cool if the backgrounds could be animated,
but creating your own background is better than having a standard one :D.

The Qoob SX does not support backgrounds, or cheats. It is VERY unlikely that it ever will, because the flash size is so small.

I don't know if someone said it already but the backgrounds don't have to have 3 spaces without a picture in version 1.3 for qoob pro you can hide the text of the first and the second space so then you have only 1 spot with text and that text contains the no medium text.

I'm not good with paintshop and such so I'll just place a request here.
Now that we've got 1.3b3 backgrounds can be made even more beautiful since the text blocks are transparent AND the will swap on boot!
So if anybody would like to make some new backgrounds....I'd really like to see some great retro-game-backgrounds. Games like , zelda (nes or snes), super mario kart, Mario Bros, Metroid (nes), final fantasy 6 etc etc
(yeah I know there are a few here already)
I'd also like (sorry for asking so much :) )some more backgrounds in the same anime/rpg-ish style as the "may kopie" posted by SDragon on the third page of this topic.
Thanks in advance!
Ow and thanks for the ones already here! Great stuff!!

JohnyTwoHats - Due to your quality and number of releases I've given you your own gallery over at my Mod That Cube -FAQ- (http://modthatcube.pxn-os.com). If you would be kind enough as to email me (mailto:brakken@ngcdev.com) any future artwork I'll have it put online right away.
Your artwork joins mine and other great artists in a collection with currently 80 different selections to chose from.
If you need another URL to reference to you can always use the location of your images in my FAQ as I know the host your using now is slow.

This background suppose to be used with Hide Texts ON and with a bios that supports transparency.
I attached two m1v: one that uses 1 slot and another that uses 2 slots, so you can choose between perfect quality and size.
I also noticed that the image gets better using Tmpgenc 2.5 instead of 3.0. So if you are going to do a background yourself I recommend Tmpgenc 2.5.

Hi there!
I see a lot of people made nice backgrounds and they seem to work quite nicely. I made two backgrounds for my GameCube, as well, but after converting them to M1V (using Sorenson Squeeze) and uploading them to the qoob flash ROM they showed up, but it looks like black (#000000) and white (#FFFFFF) are exchanged and there is flickering mess all over. Can anyone help me with this, maybe compressing the two PNGs to M1V for me so they work? Thanks in advance!
PS: Please write me at d_lippert(at)gmx.ch if you want to help me, then I will send you the PNG files.
JohnnyTwoHats

If you can, convert your PNGs to BMP and use TMPGEnc as per this guide (http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?s=&postid=58525#post58525).
Otherwise, you can always just attach your files to a post here and I will gladly encode them for you.
Oh yeah, thanks!
I don't have a PC, but I can run VirtualPC on my Mac and installed and used the TMPGEnc software and it seemed to work. Tomorrow I will flash it at a PC user friend's home and try if the problems are gone. While I'm at it I will also flash the 1.3b4 BIOS to the QOOB.
Thanks again! :)

I just made my first background. It must be used so it doesn't show any additional text so set "Hide Text" to on. (i don't know if this feature is available on other buils besides the beta version). But the background is build for the beta version.
Well, here goes nothing, hope someone likes it :D
ps. as i can't upload the extension .MV1 or .M1V (forgot what it was) but convert it with the TMPGEnc program. The program can be found in JohnnyTwoHats guide that is available here (http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?s=&postid=58525#post58525)

Another 1, this time Samus Aran takes place in the background
ps. If someone wants to experiment with moving backgrounds, just don't, I allready did and the Qoob Chip goes weird and all of your hard work is for nothing + the file takes to much memory (about 4/5 size, depending on size). Maybe some support for other file types in the future?

When I want that the image gets better I usually make the m1v bigger, like about 126k so it uses 2 slots. And a good encoder also helps (like the tmpgenc 2.5). But of course that on TV screen it will never have the same quality as on the monitor because the TV has way less resolution than a monitor, and usually is interlaced.

While I was testing a background that I was doing I confirmed one thing that I already was afraid that were true: the image was getting stretched. Then I figured out why: the output pixel aspect ratio should be set to "4:3 NTSC 525 lines" and the video arrange mode set to "fullscreen (keep aspect ratio)". But doing that using a 640x480 source image the .m1v would have black bars (although the bars would not been seen in most TVs).
So I made some tests and figured out that using that configuration, if I did not want to have any black bars in the .m1v the SOURCE image should be 640x540 (the source image not the output .m1v that still must to be 640x480). But 640x480 is enough so no black bars are show in most TVs (well, at least on mine using 640x480 a very small black bar would appear on top of the image, so I decided to use 640x500 as the minimal size).
But of course, these .mv1 cannot be used with PAL output because the image would be really stretched and the black bars problably visible. And it would be too much work to make the backgrounds for both modes, and beside that I would not be able to test them since my TV does not support PAL... But, hey! Look at me talking like someone cares.
But anyway, if you are curious about what resolution should have the source image when using "4:3 PAL 625 lines" pixel aspect ratio so that no black bars are show, then you will like to know that it should 684x480.
So the bottom line is that the next backgrounds made by me should only be used for NTSC outputs.

Inspired by other people's works, I tried to make a mix of Gamecube logo with the Qoob logo. The result is very simple (since I pretty much only changed the color of the middle cube) but I really like it. So I made a few backgrounds using this new logo, and changed some old ones.
Just to remember, all my backgrounds should be used with bios that supports transparency, and with Hide Texts ON.

That is all (at least for now). I just hope someone like.
And just to remeber, all backgrounds have two diferents m1v files so that you can choose between size (1 slot) and perfect quality (2 slots).
I just moded my qoob sx and works perfectly fine. Thank you guys at qoob.!
Now, I heard that you can change/update the welcome screen that appears when you turn on your GC.
I followed the instructions to create an MV1 file and already have my own background that I like to use on my GC.
Could somebody HELP ME PLEASE???????
Thanks!

This definitively is not the right thread for this. Beside that already there is info on that matter in this forum, you just need to look for it.

The Qoob SX do not have support for custom background (it does not have any free memory for it), only Qoob Pro does (Qoob SX has 128KB while Qoob Pro has 2MB).

You also can find your answer here: http://modthatcube.pxn-os.com/content/backup.htm. The Qoob also has a built-in ripper but is way slower. So that is the best solution.

As I said, read some and you will find out what you are doing wrong:
From the third post of this thread: "Use the 1.3 flash software, and select file type "Bootlogo (*.MVI, *.MPG, *.M1V)" and your background, and then flash it to an empty slot."
From a post on the 5th page (post #64): Link to the 1.3 bios and flasher (http://forums.maxconsole.net/attachment.php?s=&postid=54882)
If you are too lazy to figure this out, then you have no business advertising that you sell and offer installation support for the Qoob.

The best program (at least in my opnion) to generate the MPEG file is the TMPGEnc 2.5. I attached two project files for it, one where the m1v file is maximized for 1 slot and another that is maximized for 2 slots.
You can find the free edition of the TMPGEnc 2.5 at this site: http://www.tmpgenc.net/.
If you want to use the TMPGEnc project files attached to generate a 2 slots m1v, but the source image is 640x480 and not 640x540 like my template, be sure to change the Aspect Ratio to "1:1 (VGA)" at the "Video" tab in the "MPEG Setting", unless you want the image to have the correct aspect ratio (although most people do not seen to care or noticed it).
I explain a little more about the source image sizes at this post: http://forums.maxconsole.net/showpost.php?p=112140&postcount=168
I also attached a psd (Photoshop) file that have guidelines (guidelines are not part of the final file) and some layers that indicate the areas and its function. The psd also have the logos that I use on my backgrounds (who know, some one might be interested).
I also attached a JPEG showing the layers and the guidelines in case you do not use Photoshop.
But this template do not show the area used when Show Text is on (I never use them so I do not know exactly where they are).
Both the TMPGEnc project files and the template images are set to generate a m1v with NTSC Pixel Aspect Ratio. All or most the other background are made using VGA Pixel Aspect Ratio, but I stopped making backgrounds that way because the image get stretched, specially with NTSC outputs. So this (image) template is no good if you are using a PAL output.
JohnnyTwoHats made a template (and a guide) for VGA Pixel Aspect Ratio, and you can find it at this post: http://forums.maxconsole.net/showpost.php?p=58525&postcount=57. There you also can find the link to the TMPGEnc 2.5.
When using the TMPGEnc project files, if you use the "Browse" button to select the source image, be sure to click the "Setting" button and change the "Frame Rate" back to "25 fps" although it would work anyway, but the image would be slightly worse because I calculated the bitrate using "25 fps" and not "30 fps".
But if you do use the "Browse" button to change the source image, you MUST change the Aspect Ratio back to "4:3 525 lines (NTSC)" (just the Aspect Ratio and not the Source Aspect Ratio). Unless of course you are making a VGA Pixel Aspect Ratio m1v.
Because the source is a image and the m1v has only one frame I'm not sure if it would change anything, but just to be sure, if you do use the "Browse" button to change the source image, you should also change the "Video source type" to "Non-interlace (progressive)", it the "Advanced" tab at the MPEG Setting (again click the "Setting" to see the "MPEG Settings).
So using my template (for NTSC outputs), the image shoud be at least 640x500 and 640x540 at most. The m1v will always be 640x480, so you should always use the TMPGEnc project attached at this post because they already are configured to output the m1v correctly. Using a 640x500 image, only the (dark) blue area of the template will be present (the rest will be filled with black), and using a 640x540 image, all will be filled by the image including the black area.
And you should save the JPEG (or whatever format you use to generate the m1v) at the maximum quality, so the loss of quality happens only when generating the m1v. Generating a 2 slots m1v file should have not loss of quality, while generating a 1 slot m1v should happen some loss of quality, although depending on the image very little loss of quality might happen even with only 1 slot.

It has been said a billion times: it is not possible to change the Qoob SX background (there is no space for a better background). The only space of the Qoob Sx is used for the bios.

I could not find the gamecube-scene at the site that you mentioned but I'm pretty sure it does not. They only used m1v because it was easier to implement than the jpeg. They say that at the readme of bios 1.3a if I'm not mistaken. If people put some animated m1v at the site that you mentioned I'm sure they did not test otherwise they would know it do not work.

Is there a preferred bios for using backgrounds? I tried the GCOS v1.5 and it had no option for loading a background file which I flashed to an empty slot on the qoob PRO via USB.
Found a v1.3 Qoob bios but still can't choose the skin. It just loaded one at random that I had on the chip. Also, where are the BIOS kept on this site?
I can't find any to try different versions...
like 1.3c and 1.3b4

Like you said, to be able to choose the bios you need to use the bios 1.3c or 1.3b4. GCOS is not exactly a bios since the qoob cannot turn on and load it first.
In this site the bios are posted at their own thread.
The bios 1.3c is at this thread:
