Nintendo 3DS continued its strong year with another first: The platform was the best-selling video game hardware platform in the United States in May. The launch of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D on May 23 and another strong month for Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon helped Nintendo 3DS software sales in stores increase by more than 60 percent over the same time last year.Nintendo 3DS also had two of the top three best-selling software SKUs for the month, with Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D at No. 2 and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon at No. 3.

At the recently concluded E3 trade show in Los Angeles, Nintendo defined its proposition for the holiday season by showcasing a cavalcade of great games coming for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems in 2013. Starting in August and continuing through the end of the year, Wii U will launch one major game a month, including Pikmin 3 (Aug. 4), The Wonderful 101 (Sept. 15), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (October), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (November) and Super Mario 3D World (December). Nintendo 3DS will build on its momentum with the successive launches of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (Aug. 11), Pokémon X and Pokémon Y (Oct. 12) Mario Party for Nintendo 3DS (name not final, November) and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (November).

The series - known as Boss Fight Books - will feature five books based on historic and groundbreaking video games - two of which are on a Nintendo system: Earthbound and Super Mario Bros. 2. The other three are Galaga, ZZT and Jagged Alliance 2, all of which have helped shape video gaming history.

Each book takes a critical and historical look at the game in question, with each author also adding their own personal experience to the text.

According to the Kickstarter page each book will focus on something different, be it history, level design, story or music. It's not clear what the books based on Earthbound and Super Mario Bros. 2 will focus on, but either way we're sure they'll be an interesting read!

The gates of Animal Crossing: New Leaf will open when the game launches for the Nintendo 3DS system on June 9, inviting residents to move in and, in a series first, become mayors of their own personalized towns. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is based on the real-world calendar - no two days in the game are the same - and includes features new to the series like customizing specific pieces of furniture, visiting a tropical island, swimming in the ocean and even sharing personalized homes with friends.

"Residents of Animal Crossing have never had it so good," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "With a host of new features and a game that changes every day, players will find themselves visiting Animal Crossing: New Leaf for a long, long time."

A Mayor's Life

As mayors of their towns, players make decisions that will directly affect how their towns grow and function. Players can set ordinances, such as keeping their shops open later if they find themselves playing the game mostly at night, and also select public works projects to build, including bridges, benches, streetlamps and clocks. In addition to being mayor, players are also residents, and can earn money to spend at local businesses on Main Street, get to know their neighbors and collect myriad items like insects, fish, fossils and fruit, some of which can be donated to the town museum for visitors to admire.

Once players get accustomed to their new life in the town, Tortimer, the town's former mayor, will visit and invite them to the tropical island where he now lives. The tropical island is a new feature in Animal Crossing: New Leaf that lets players search for unique items and take mini-vacations with up to three other friends who also own the game. While visiting the island, they can participate in a tour featuring a fun mini-game. They can even rent a wetsuit and dive into the ocean to catch underwater creatures or just leisurely swim around and enjoy the sights.

More to Customize, More to Share, More to Discover

Animal Crossing: New Leaf expands on the remarkably deep customization that fans love. Like previous Animal Crossing games, players can customize almost everything in the game, including their homes' interior design and clothes, as well as patterns for clothing, wallpaper and carpets. But in this game, players can also adjust the specific look of thousands of individual pieces of furniture, including new types of wall items like clocks, shelves and lamps, and decorate the exterior of their houses with new mailboxes, doors, façades and stepping stones. Players can even create custom fashion designs at the Able Sisters' Tailor that can be turned into QR Code patterns to be shared with others. The amount of customizable options is nearly endless.

Players can play locally with other Animal Crossing: New Leaf fans who also own the game, share Friend Codes to travel to other players' towns, go on a tropical island tour via a wireless broadband Internet connection with friends or up to three other random players from all over the world, or tag fellow players using the StreetPass feature to add their personalized houses to the Happy Home Showcase.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is constantly evolving and changing. Certain items can only be found at a certain time of day, and certain events can only be experienced during special in-game holidays on the calendar. There's something new to do every day in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

Also releasing on June 9 is a special Nintendo 3DS XL system featuring designs from Animal Crossing: New Leaf that comes pre-installed with the new game, which is perfect for players who want to check on their bustling towns without having to carry around a Game Card. Players all over the world fell in love with many memorable, adventure-filled moments in the well-received Donkey Kong Country Returns game for Wii: jumping around the game's lush and colorful side-scrolling levels; clinging to the side of a swinging platform; riding on a speeding mine cart; and leaping from barrel to barrel between foreground and background.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, launching May 24 for the Nintendo 3DS system, includes all these great moments, but also offers players a host of new features that were not available in the original Wii game and a beautiful new 3D makeover that makes the graphics look more impressive than ever before.

These items include portable "DK Barrels," which players can use at any time to have access to Diddy Kong; "Green Balloons," used to protect Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong from falling off a cliff or ledge; and "Crash Guards," which make players temporarily invincible in rocket barrel or mine cart areas. Fans can also play in "Original Mode" to experience the game as it was originally designed.

Exclusive to Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D are eight new, challenging levels located on a cloud that can only be reached by going through the Golden Temple after players complete the main game. Two players that both own a copy of the game can also connect via local wireless to team up as Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong for some barrel-blasting, rail-riding, ground-pounding multiplayer action.

To celebrate the launch of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D for Nintendo 3DS on May 24, Nintendo is partnering with the Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens on Memorial Day weekend (May 24-27) to host an event on the L.A. Zoo grounds. The four-day event will feature fun activities for all members of the family, including an interactive experience at the Campo Gorilla Reserve, various demo stations where attendees can play the Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D game and coupon giveaways for $5 off the game at participating GameStop retail stores. For the weekend, the gorilla area will be temporarily renamed the "Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D at Campo Gorilla Reserve."

"Fans will get a chance to spend time with Donkey Kong and some of his friends from the animal kingdom at the L.A. Zoo this Memorial Day weekend," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "They'll be able to experience a fun day with Nintendo at the zoo and play Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D."

One of the weekend's main events, a "Donkey Kong Interactive Experience," allows visitors to watch L.A. Zoo staff feed the real-life gorillas from giant cardboard barrels that are inspired by the barrels featured in the video game. This friendly, educational activity is a one-of-a-kind experience for families and a treat for the gorillas. In addition to the feeding, there will be opportunities for fans to take pictures with the costumed Donkey Kong character around the zoo.

"Our gorillas have never had a visit from a celebrity of Donkey Kong's stature," said John R. Lewis, director of the Los Angeles Zoo. "All the planned activities for the weekend fit perfectly in line with the family-friendly environment of the zoo, as well as bring awareness to the animals in the gorilla reserve."

The original Donkey Kong Country Returns game has been rebuilt from the ground up for ease-of-play on Nintendo 3DS. Players control iconic character Donkey Kong as he runs, jumps, blasts, rides and pounds his way through a series of beautiful, challenging, side-scrolling levels. The upcoming game is optimized for portable play and features a new mode, eight additional levels and stunning 3D graphics.

A strong launch for LEGO® City Undercover: The Chase Begins helped Nintendo 3DS^TM maintain its torrid pace in 2013.

Through the first four months of the year, Nintendo has already sold more than 2.1 million units of first-party Nintendo 3DS software in the U.S. alone, an increase of 52 percent over the same time period last year.

In 2012, it took 30 weeks for Nintendo 3DS to sell 2 million units of first-party software. In 2013, the platform accomplished that same feat in 18 weeks.

With the peak holiday selling season still ahead and a strong lineup of upcoming games that includes Donkey Kong Country^TM Returns 3D on May 24, Animal Crossing^TM: New Leaf on June 9, Mario and Luigi^TM: Dream Team on Aug. 11, as well as new titles in the Pokémon^TM, Mario Golf^TM and Legend of Zelda^TM franchises, Nintendo 3DS is poised to have the strongest year of sales in its history.

Some notable sales numbers* achieved by Nintendo in April include:

• LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins sold nearly 94,000 combined physical and digital copies after launching on April 24.
• Luigi's Mansion^TM: Dark Moon sold more than 140,000 combined physical and digital units in April and has now sold more than 530,000 total units to date.
• In its sixth month on the market, New Super Mario Bros.^TM U for the Wii U^TM system increased its lifetime sales total to nearly 770,000 combined physical and digital units.

During the next several months, a cavalcade of fan-favorite franchises will launch for Wii U. This includes Game & Wario^TM on June 23, Pikmin^TM 3 on Aug. 4, Disney's Planes from Disney Interactive on Aug. 6 and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell® Blacklist^TM from Ubisoft on Aug. 20. At the upcoming E3 trade show in June in Los Angeles, Nintendo expects to show attendees upcoming Wii U games from the Mario Kart^TM, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Super Smash Bros.^TM franchises.

Nintendo is reportedly issuing "content ID match" claims on Let's Play videos featuring their game franchises, according to prolific YouTuber Zack Scott, who is currently playing Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.

Scott noted that Nintendo made content ID matches against a number of his videos, thus preventing him from monetizing those videos on YouTube.

Players of the recently released game have begun reporting a bug that allows male characters to marry each other, go on honeymoons and even have and raise children. That bug, however, is totally misogynistic as the same rights are not available for female characters.

According to Kotaku, users are "thrilled" by the bug, posting photos of their characters in domestic bliss - including taking baths together - and spawning the hashtag, "homokore" or "homo collection." This continues Japan's current obsession with all things gay-male-sex-related.

To wit, there's a new meme in the form of a four-legged crawler who goes around saying "Homoo..." or "Gimme Homoo" in its quest for gay men. Also known as a Saturday night among the Queerty staff.

Nintendo has neither confirmed nor denied that this in indeed a bug, though after a user contacted their customer service, he was told the game needs to be patched. However, the gay marriage bug - which as we all know, is spreading - has become an all new reason to pick up Tomodachi Collection. Because who doesn't love some virtual man-on-man bath time?

You begin by tapping the Internet icon on the 3DS Home menu. This opens up the 3DS browser, from which you can navigate to the https://i.nintendo.net website. Once there, you’ll be given the option to log into Twitter or Tumblr. After you log in, you’ll be able to select an image from the Nintendo 3DS Camera App—which is where all 3DS images are accessed—and add comments and hashtags to it. Once you’re done, you’ll be able to post it directly to your Twitter or Tumblr account.

Nintendo’s new website isn’t the only way to share 3DS screenshots via Twitter. You can also do it by accessing Twitpic or other sites from the 3DS browser, but Nintendo’s new solution is certainly the most simple and quickest… provided you use it with Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Tomodachi Collection. Thus far, those are the only two games supported for some odd reason, despite the fact that there are other 3DS games that let you take in-game screenshots as well.
