The OptiContrastTM panel reduces reflections and provides clearer viewing, even in bright sunlight, and creates a seamlessly black surface when the phone is turned off.

Last week we talked about the rumors that Google was going to move more into the 'Gaming World', with some thinking it might even be their own 'console', but now the truth is almost out there, as the new APK that rolling out ahead of their big 'Google I/O' conference has been ripped apart by 'AndroidPolice' and they detail all the features that the new 'Google Play Games' will be having, minus of course what 'Games' might be offered with this new online app/store from Google geared towards the 'mobile Gaming world':

Synced Game Saves

Icon Badges

Matchmaking And Invites

Achievements

Scoring and Leaderboards

So it looks like for sure, besides the 'Cloud Saves', that Google is aiming to have alot of 'features' found first on Xbox Live, with 'matchmaking', 'achievements' and 'leaderboards', and now we just have to wait until Google I/O arrives to see what else is planned.

From the makers of the Bluestacks App, comes a new way to enjoy mobile gaming on your big screen TV

Not much is known about GamePop yet, but it seems to be an type of OUYA clone, but also a 'streaming service' to access many mobile apps on your big screen TV for $6.99 per month.

Here comes another yet console looking for a share of the hot 2013 marketplace, this one will be called 'GamePop' and is from the makers of BlueStacks, which is an app designed to run games like 'Angry Birds' on your Mac or Windows PC in fullscreen, have just announced they will be releasing their own special streaming version of an Android Gaming Console called GamePop.

Unlike OUYA, they are giving away their $100 Console+Controller for the month of May, but have you locking into a $6.99 monthly deal to access over library normally 'mobile-only' games on their new streaming service, which the video claims you will be able to play smoothly and in alot of cases with even better graphics on your big screen TV, plus you can use your own smartphone as another controller if you so wish.

Quote:

The company says it will have about 500 games when the device launches in June, and you can pre-order the console now. GamePop says its service costs $6.99 per month, but you're actually required to pay for a full year up front if you pre-order, meaning it'll cost you almost $84 to get the console. If you buy the console after it launches, you'll have to return it to the company if you cancel your subscription within the first year.

GamePop hasn't released a list of all its game titles, but in an interview, BlueStacks CEO Rosen Sharma said his company is working with Google to add the Google Play Android app store console to the device, which would allow you to download just about any game. (That could be a bit of a challenge though, since developers have to follow a certain set of guidelines if they want to add Play to their devices. Google typically only allows Play to run on smartphones and tablets that can access other Google services like Google Maps.)

But GamePop does have partnerships with some recognizable Android game developers like Glu Mobile, which makes the popular "Gun Bros." games, and Intellijoy, which makes children's apps. The company will announce more titles and developer partners before the console launches.

Overall, GamePop is an interesting approach. There's definitely an opening to bring casual mobile gaming to the living room, especially since many of those games have resolutions so high that they look great on big-screen HD TVs. (Watch the video below to see that for yourself.) And moving forward, Sharma said he'd like to make it so you can play a game on the console and pick up where you left off on your smartphone. That's the ultimate dream, but we're still a long way off from it.

The whole concept is in its infancy, and no one has truly nailed it yet. GamePop is a big bet that people will want to pay a subscription fee for a limited selection of games instead of paying for individual titles.

GamePop's biggest competitor Ouya has gotten a lot of negative reviews for having poor build quality and the fact that most Android games aren't built for regular video game console controllers. GamePop will have such a controller, but you'll also be able to download an Android or iPhone app if you want to control the action with your phone.

Not much else is known at the moment about their upcoming device and its specs, so for now check out their promo video below:

Recent developments within the Google Camp and their upcoming I/O conference, points towards something big happening in regard to Gaming and Google

Recently, Google hired Noah Falstein as their Chief Game Designer, and whom is famous for various Arcade Classics and the series of Indiana Jones games back in days of DOS.

Then the upcoming Google I/O conference has an event titled "New Developments in Mobile Gaming."

And to add even more fuel to the rumor mill, Android Police have ripped apart some recent Google development apps, and it appears they are planning a "Multiplayer Gaming Service" for their Android platform, that might work similar to Xbox Live or at least Apple's Game Center app.

All these facts, and causing a whirlwind of rumors that Google is planning something big in the Gaming world, maybe even a Google Console???

Quote:

 Possible: More Offbeat Gaming Endeavors

Google already dabbles in game design, occasionally releasing games in the form of Google Doodles, such as Zamboni and Soccer, and running the augmented-reality game Ingress through its Niantic Labs studio. Google could be bringing Falstein on board just to make better games. Or, given the data-mining potential of Ingress, perhaps Falstein's job will be to find new ways to influence user behavior through gaming. (One of his main interests, according to TechCrunch, is the field of "serious games," which attempt to teach or persuade rather than simply entertain.)

One thing to note, though: Google tried hiring a high-profile game executive before, bringing on former Sony manager Mark DeLoura in 2010 to serve as game-developer evangelist. He left the company four months later, saying it wasn't a perfect fit.

Likely: New Gaming Platform, Hopefully Not Just Android

Android has plenty of games, but it doesn't have an overarching experience similar to Xbox Live or iOS Game Center. There are no achievements, no friends lists and no standard multiplayer features. That could change soon, given the leaked details posted by Android Police.

But hopefully the effort doesn't stop with Android. Last year, Google+ product manager Punit Soni promised a more unified gaming platform for Android, Chrome and Google+. "By next year, we will not be here talking about Google+ Games, Chrome Web Store games, Games for Native Client and Android games. We will be talking about Google games," Soni said, according to VentureBeat. Google has a tendency to make empty promises, but I'd like to be surprised by a gaming platform that isn't siloed on Android.

A Google Game Console: Too Soon?

Given the paucity of rumors on this topic, it seems unlikely that Google is getting ready to announce a game console of its own. But it's not a crazy idea. Smaller companies like Ouya and GameStick are prepping their own consoles based on Android, and Nvidia is working on an Android gaming handheld. There's plenty of buzz around these devices, and Google hasn't enjoyed much set-top-box success with Google TV, so a Nexus console could provide a better path into the living room. Google could start by coming up with its own standard for physical game controls in Android, with a clear way for users to find supported games, but I have no idea whether that's something we'll see at Google I/O.

With nearly 5 million games played already, Blendoku is set to become the next mobile craze, entertaining audiences and educating players around the world about colors

Interesing PR we have just received, it is about a new puzzle game for iOS and Android devices called Blendoku, a mix of crosswords, colors and sudoku. Check it out:

Quote:

Blendoku, a new game released this month by Lonely Few, is taking the world by storm. Based on a simple premise, the game challenges the player to complete a crossword-like board of colors. Like other highly addictive puzzle games, Blendoku's design is effortlessly simple but has a level of depth and challenge that's keeping players hooked. Unlike other puzzle games, however, it is also educational, teaching players advanced color comprehension taught only in the finest art schools.

Based purely on the principles of colors and how they blend, the gameplay is highly accessible for all ages and cultural backgrounds. While enjoying the game’s 475 levels, the player is indirectly learning the core fundamentals of color theory and color-blending techniques.

Blendoku is so effective at teaching color that multiple institutions are now using it as actual in-class exercises. The developers were even asked to address a community of art teachers about how Blendoku can be used broadly to teach color theory.

Usually, a game that's as effective at teaching will unfortunately lack enough gameplay to keep most players interested. Blendoku, however, was designed as a real game, and as such, it has no problem keeping players entertained. In the short time since its launch, Blendoku has earned a staggering amount of positive user reviews and was prominently featured by Apple in the App Store.

After thousands of reviews earning an average user score of 96%, Blendoku's cementing itself as the next big thing in mobile gaming. Blendoku is now available on Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store as free downloads.
The Ouya was benchmarked, and well, it failed to impress...

According to benchmark tests done by Futuremark (and performed on the beta/preview unit currently available), the Ouya is *currently* the 86th most powerful Android device on the market.

Scoring a 3887 on the site's metric, the console is -unsurprisingly- well behind devices like Samsung's Galaxy S III (5075), the HTC One XL (6206), and Google's Nexus 4 (10194)...

Quote:

The results came from James Coote, developer of the upcoming OUYA game called Executive Star, and although we did not expect much from the OUYA since it is based on Nvidia's Tegra 3 SoC paired up with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage it is still quite dissapointing to see it take 73rd and 71st place in the 3DMark Ice Storm and Ice Storm Extreme where it gets outperformed by many tablets and smartphones.

In case you missed it the Ice Storm test is aimed at Android smartphone or tablet devices and includes two graphics tests that should put some strain on GPU and a physics test that will measure the CPU performance. Ice Storm Extreme is quite similar but raises the resolution to 1080p and uses higher quality textures and post-processing effects. Ice Storm Extreme will also soon be available in the Windows version as well, which should allow for direct comparison of Windows and Android based tablets.

Is worth noting that the $99 Ouya is a fraction of the cost of a Galaxy S IV or HTC One. However, the current Hardware seems to be outdated already. Perhaps we should wait for the "Ouya 2" to come out?

If you want to check out the full and current results, take a look at Futuremark's OUYA Console Dev Kit Review and the Android phones/tablets benchmark ranking.
Foxconn has agreed to license patents that Microsoft holds relating to Android and Chrome OS...

Microsoft has inked a deal with Foxconn (and its parent company "Hon Hai") that allows the Taiwan-based firm to produce devices (smartphones, tablets, and TVs) that include technology covered by Microsoft's patents for Android and Chrome OS.

So now, the manufacturing giant -which makes over 40% of the world's consumer electronics devices— will be paying Microsoft royalties on its devices that run either Google OS...

Microsoft holds patents relating to navigation and how websites display content; technology used on the Android and Chrome platforms. Terms of the Foxconn deal were not released, but the company will pay Microsoft a royalty for the Android- and Chrome OS-based devices it produces.

"We are pleased that the list of companies benefitting from Microsoft's Android licensing program now includes the world's largest contract manufacturer, Hon Hai," Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of the Intellectual Property Group at Microsoft, said in a statement. "By licensing both brand name companies and their contract manufacturers, we have successfully increased the overall effectiveness and global reach of the program."

"We recognize and respect the importance of international efforts that seek to protect intellectual property," said Samuel Fu, director of the Intellectual Property Department at Hon Hai. "The licensing agreement with Microsoft represents those efforts and our continued support of international trade agreements that facilitate implementation of effective patent protection."

Fu said Hon Hai has more than 54,000 patents of its own.

With the Foxconn deal, "nearly all manufacturers in the Android ecosystem have taken an IP license," Gutierrez tweeted last night.

Microsoft's patent licensing program dates back to Dec. 2003. The company has previously signed patent licensing deals with companies like HTC, Samsung, Suanta, Copal Electronics, Wistron, LG, and Pegatron.
Taiwan's FTC is investigating Samsung for defaming HTC on local online forums.

Samsung is under investigation by Taiwanese authorities over allegations that it used deceptive advertising practices in the country.

Apparently, the tech giant hired students to tout Samsung smartphones while posting negative comments about HTC devices.

Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission could punish Samsung for up to NT$25 million (US$835,000) if it is found to be in violation of fair trade rules.

Here's the report:

Quote:

The investigation occurs after a local site, called TaiwanSamsungLeaks, accused the South Korean company of "evil marketing" for covertly criticizing rival products through anonymous Internet users. As evidence, the site published documents allegedly from Samsung's hired marketing firm cataloguing the different forum posts it made last year on local gadget sites.

The topics covered included a user complaining that his girlfriend's HTC One X phone was constantly crashing, and how Samsung's Galaxy Note phone was superior to HTC's Sensation XL handset.

Benchmark reviews were also posted, claiming that Samsung's Galaxy S3 outperformed the HTC One X in battery life and graphics. In addition, some of the comments tried to praise Samsung, and asked if the company's handsets had helped local users earn job promotions.

Samsung said it has as yet to receive a notice from Taiwan's FTC on the investigation. But the "unfortunate incident" did occur, the company admitted.

"Samsung Electronics Taiwan (SET) has ceased all marketing activities that involve the posting of anonymous comments," it said on Tuesday in a statement. The company adheres to "transparent and honest communications with consumers," and is working to prevent the problem from occurring again.

HTC, however, said in a statement it won't rule out "taking appropriate action" to protect the company and its consumers. Taiwan is HTC's home market.

The 6.3-inch model comes with a 720p display (Samsung lists it only as "HD," but uses "Full HD" to indicate a 1080p display), a 1.7GHz dual-core processor from an unnamed manufacturer, 1.5GB of RAM, and 8 or 16GB of storage. The 5.8-inch model steps down to a 960×540 display, a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, and only 8GB of storage. Both include Android 4.2, the latest version of Android.

Given the specifications, they could be a bit cheaper than handsets like the Galaxy S4.
Samsung Introduces the GALAXY Mega

New GALAXY Mega offers the latest smartphone features with an extensive viewing experience.

SEOUL, Korea, April 11, 2013 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, today announced the Samsung GALAXY Mega, a device that combines the portability and convenience of a smartphone with the power, multitasking capabilities and extensive viewing experience of a tablet. The newest addition to the GALAXY family balances an optimal viewing experience on a 6.3-inch HD screen, yet is ultra-thin and portable enough to put into a pocket or hold in one hand. The GALAXY Mega offers a mix of popular smartphone and tablet features such as an effortless user experience, a split screen, multitasking between video and other apps and more.

"We are aware of a great potential in the bigger screen for extensive viewing multimedia, web browsing, and more," said JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Business, Samsung Electronics. "We are excited to provide another choice to meet our consumers' varying lifestyles, all while maintaining the high-quality features of the award-winning GALAXY series."

Best of Both Worlds

The GALAXY Mega is an ideal choice for customers who want to get the most out of one device that brings great quality at an even greater value. With a 6.3-inch HD LCD screen with landscape mode support, the GALAXY Mega enables an exceptional widescreen view for various applications including web browsing, video, and SNS.

The GALAXY Mega is also light and thin for incredible portability and easy, convenient mobile phone use. Customers can stay connected with a variety of new phone features including:

· 'Group Play': Enables easy content sharing for up to 8 devices on the same Wi-Fi network.
· 'Samsung WatchON': Transforms into an IR remote controller for a richer TV experience. Connect the device to your home entertainment system, and it will provide program recommendations, schedules, and even remotely control your TV.
· 'Samsung Link': Easily streams photos, videos, notes, or music to your television, tablet or computer.
· 'S Translator': Say or text what you need translated into the GALAXY Mega, and it will provide instant translation, using text or voice translation on applications including email, and ChatON.
· 'ChatON': Share what's on your screen with friends to stay more connected.

Productivity and Multimedia for the Multi-Tasker

GALAXY Mega users will accomplish more with the rich, interactive experience and increased usability of the widescreen mode. Split screen capability for a variety of applications including email, messages, 'MyFiles,' 'S Memo,' 'S Planner', and more, makes for increased efficiency. With the popular 'Air View' feature, customers can preview information in emails, photos in Gallery, and speed dial contacts.
The GALAXY Mega is equipped with an enhanced 8 megapixel rear-facing camera with a 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera, along with a variety of camera modes including 'Drama Shot' (merging continuous shots of a moving object), 'Sound & Shot' (captures 9 seconds of sound and voice together as the picture is taken to capture moments), 'Rich tone,' 'Sports' and more. The device also packs various newly-introduced features for endless entertainment, including:

· 'S Travel': Provides trip information, local guides and resources and more

· 'Story Album': Allows customers to create albums of daily events, keep special moments in one place using a timeline, geo-tag information and publish digital albums in hard copy

For users seeking the same great tablet features with even more portability, Samsung is introducing the GALAXY Mega 5.8. This more compact version features a 5.8-inch screen.

Both GALAXY Mega 6.3 and 5.8 run on the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean experience, and feature Dual Core Processor, spacious internal storage along with up to 64GB of expandable memory to store favorite apps, music, videos, photos and more. The devices' advanced software also facilitates more efficient processor use for improved battery life, meaning users can enjoy longer talk time and multimedia use.

The GALAXY Mega will be available globally beginning May from Europe and Russia. The product availability varies by market and will be rolled out gradually.

The Android/iOS game funded by Ontario taxpayers is causing a firestorm of controversy in Canada for depicting pipeline bombings...

An Android/iOS game funded by Ontario taxpayers is drawing controversy across Canada for depicting pipeline bombings.

Called “Pipe Trouble”, it was released by TV Ontario, the province’s public broadcaster. TVO recently removed the game from its website after critics charged that it depicts eco-terrorist activities. The broadcaster said the game will be independently reviewed...

Here's the report:

Quote:

The game is described on a TVO blog as a “companion ethical game” to a documentary called “Trouble in the Peace,” which addresses local opposition to pipelines and the bombing of pipelines in Peace River, B.C.

The object of the game is to build a money-making pipeline without harming the environment or angering local farmers. Its introductory video appears to depict protesting activists and a pipeline blowing up.

Politicians in B.C. say the game is a tasteless reminder of the issue at the heart of the documentary.

Beginning in 2008, a series of explosions targeting Encana pipelines rocked northern B.C., leaving residents shaken. Activist Wiebo Ludwig, previously convicted in Alberta oilpatch bombings, was arrested, but never charged. He died last year.

Mike Bernier, the mayor of Dawson Creek, said the incident should not be taken lightly.

“It wasn’t a laughing matter and to have somebody really try to take away from the devastating experience that we had by putting it into a video game -- it’s just absolutely disturbing,” Bernier said.

The video game has also garnered strong criticism in Alberta, where Premier Alison Redford said in a statement that she found it “disappointing to see a taxpayer-funded game and organization depict the blowing up of pipelines.

“It’s the exact opposite of Canada’s interests given all of Canada benefits from a strong and diverse energy sector.”

For its part, TVO said the game does not take sides in the debate over pipelines.

The broadcaster also denied suggestions the game has any links to the controversial Keystone XL pipeline project, as neither the documentary nor the game makes any mention of it.

The proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would ship crude from Alberta’s oilsands to refineries in Texas, is facing major opposition from environmentalists who do not want to see the line constructed.

Following the backlash, TVO pulled the game from its website, pending an independent review “in the context of TVO’s programming standards.”

A report is to be delivered to TVO’s board of directors by the end of April.

Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives also slammed the game, saying it is a “flagrant misuse” of taxpayers’ money, and that it threatens to paint Ontario as anti-pipeline and anti-Western Canada.

TVO spent approximately $100,000 on both the game and the documentary.

After being released on Steam, XBLA and Playstation Network last year, Shoot Many Robots has arrived to Android devices, via Google Play. The game will be released for iOS also “in the near future.”
"It's called "Shoot Many Robots" – do we really need to explain more? Ok…

This endless runner (and gunner) has you playing as P. Walter Tugnut, the hapless hillbilly who loves nothing more than killing robots. Jettisoned from his RV, Walter barrels through farmlands and oil fields, shooting every chainsaw-wielding toaster that gets in his way. And there are LOTS of robots in his way.

Full of explosive, robot-crushing action, Shoot Many Robots skips the fluff and delivers the gruff. Did we mention you’ll be shooting a bazillion robots?"
