Sony's new mobile uses Google Android OS

Sony Ericsson is the latest mobile handset maker to run with Google's new Android OS and run it on a new smartphone. The new device is due out during the first quarter of next year.

The latest handset maker to pick up Google's Android OS and run with it is Sony Ericsson. The company has unveiled its Xperia X10 smartphone, the first of a planned range of Android handsets from the company.

It's due out in Q1 next year, and runs Android 1.6 - a puzzling decision, given that the first handset running Android 2.0 - Motorola's Droid - goes on sale this week.

What are they supposed to use? Windows mobile? lol, The Iphone os??

Android is the best phone OS out right now in terms of...... everything.
Its open source so anyone can make changes to it or apps for it.

Mameo 5 could be a serious competitor to Android If Nokia do it right.

Not used either OS but I have my eye on the N900 which will be the first device running the new Mameo 5 OS.

Did you actually read the article? Its not questioning the use of android its questioning the use of 1.6 when 2.0 is already available. Its kind of like introducing a new laptop but shipping it with the previous OS rather than the current one, it makes it seem gimped in comparison off the bat whether it really is or not.

If only they wouldn't price it ridiculously high, but this is sony we are talking about. Well in all honesty the mobile division isn't as bad as others. I really want to get rid of this t-mobile mytouch HTC have just pissed me the hell off with their 3 android phones that have basically the exact same hardware configuration. They have some pretty neat ideas as far as software goes, but FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE UPGRADE THAT DAMN CPU ALREADY!

Anyways, first and last time I rely on t-mobiles messed up phone decisions. I have no problems with the service, or with my plan, but God Almighty do they have some craptastic phones.

Only with some business class which added the option for downgrade rights (which was due to corporates not upgrading) and netbooks which were underpowered, with consumer grade stuff it was hard to find anything with XP after vista was released that was actually new hardware...in this case it makes it appear that the phone probably cant handle 2.0.

Android 1.5, eh? Sounds like it's going to have junk specs to run 1.5.

count me in for maemo I've pre-ordered the N900 too if only it would hurry up and release already it's been delayed till about Nov 12th. two things that I hate about the n900 though is the lack of a magnetometer and the other is the loss of the USB host controller which they changed right at the last minute. the specs on the X10 are good (new Snapdragon processor) but I just don't know about its features and I do like physical keyboards on my business phones.

in the uk a lot of new consumer laptops released with xp but had a "vista compatible" sticker on them. I doubt this can't handle Android 2 it's got the latest chip around (the Snapdragon, same one in the HTC HD2) one of the fastest mobile processors if not the fastest on the market today.

Here the "vista capable" started showing up before vista shipped on machines that had upgrade offers. After vista went retail new stock had vista pre-installed but some lines mainly those with Vista Business like the Dell Latitude, Toshiba Tecra, Satellite Pro and Vaio's came with downgrade rights and XP restore media.

I know the phone should be able to handle 2.0 thats why I said it was a questionable decision to ship it with 1.6 after 2 is on the shelf...makes it seem less capable than it really is.

we were probably getting late tech as usual here.
I see, perhaps android 2 isn't on it because they've customized the UI heavily using 1.6 so switching to 2 during development would have been a bad idea just in case it breaks something.

I've never used Android are upgrades fuss free, can you even upgrade to 2 from a 1.6 custom UI device?
I'm thinking of somehow installing android on the N900 if OVI is poorly supported. maybe even using VMWare.
