Is there anything that the PSP actually needs MagicGate for? That is, will anything not work if MagicGate isn't available either because of damage to the MagicGate idstorage keys or using a memory stick that doesn't have MagicGate?

Its said magicgate is required for service mode but other than that not that i know of, Sony have pretty much dumped magicgate in favour of other DRM scemes.
I took that from the MagicGate Wiki you can use the information as you wish, Maybe it was originally designed that way or maybe the Wiki was created by a group of monkeyshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MagicGate
I have never seen anything that requires MagicGate even the content it was meant to protect does not use it.
I've not heard about service mode requiring magic gate, i seem to remember a thread (a long time ago) where someone had a fake memory stick (Non-MagicGate) and they managed to install DC5 on it.
I could be wrong though, it has been known... lol
I think the statement "PlayStation Portable – The PlayStation Portable in service mode will only boot to Memory Sticks with MagicGate enabled" is just incorrect, i can completely fry my IDS (MagicGate keys and all) and DC will still boot. DC cannot (or will not lol...) regenerate MagicGate keys.
Not sure on this one, we would need someone who has a fake memory stick to confirm.
Edit: I can add that i have a 512mb M2:
Which i use with a converter, it's pre-DC7, and has DC5 installed along with the best IDS recovery tools at the time (ChillyWilly's Key Cleaner, IDSManager, MacFixer, Homebrew enabler... yadda yadda...), I don't think it's MagicGate (But again... i could be wrong, it's been a long time since I've needed DC5 and any of the tools on that card)

Okay for the next question, i know all game content on PSN works without magicgate and the wiki tells us they dumped the scheme in favour of windows DRM for video have you tested that max?
Maybe they've abandoned it due to the PS2?![]()
No i haven't tested video, i don't use my PSP for video much.
But i dumped all of my video UMD's to ISO's after watching them then the other night i was a bit bored so decided to watch one, i couldn't get it to play... apparently you have to have a UMD in the drive (Go figure).
The only things I could think of that might need MagicGate would be the PSN store (mabye for videos purchased from the store?) or the Digital Copy feature of some Blu-Ray discs.
I only can create a perfect MMS with a MS with magic gate. Didn't tried many MS's, but 1 generic MS and 1 MagicGate, only the magic gate worked.
