New Wii Please Help!!

I'm not new to modding game consoles but I am new to soft modding the Wii.
I just got a wii today and I was looking to soft mod it. I searched the forums before I made this post. I tried these 2 links wiiguide.co.cc wiisoftmod.co.cc from the soft modding for dummies thread. The links did not work. I currently have a Wii version 4.0u and my serial number is LU71**********. Do I need to downgrade my firmware or upgrade? Where do I start? Please help me so I can help future MaxConsole members.

I'm in the same boat as you. Just got a new WII and tried to softmod it using an application (not sure if I can put the name on this list). I got HomeBrew to work but can't get the USB backup loader to work. I want to make back ups of the games I purchased on a USB but this seems to be a difficult task to get information on.

Im in the same boat, I bought my console in the USA but using it in OZ. serial number is LU65 something.
How do i tell what version software i have?
