High Definition DS with motion sensor in the works

According to reports, the president of Nintendo has revealed that a high definition version of the DS is in development. However that's not all, the device will also have a motion sensor.

The Asahi Shimbun has an interview with Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo, where he comments on a successor to the Nintendo DS. Iwata tells the paper the future handheld will be able to output high resolution graphics and have a motion sensor.

While Nintendo is developing the machine, Iwata did not set a release date. Instead, he mentioned DS sales in North America reached an all time high in 2009.

So now.. Its not bad enough people look like idiots playing some wii games flailing around... Now we get to see people in public, on planes, subways.... Randomly jumping around or god knows what else for some of the japanese games.

Now, to be able to play all your favorite ds games, You need a DS lite, a Dsi and the Ds-hd-overboard-POS

Dont trade your games to gamestop for crap

Don't forget the DS-XL for that extra large screen.

Everybody is a frakking critic. This is actually good news for the DS and should ensure that it stays competitive. If you do not like the Wii, then don't buy it. Why keep bitching about how sh*tty it is?

Or they could just release a Nintendo DS 2, doesn't that sound like a good idea?

uh huh... it's so crazy and stupid that microsoft has something that requires nothing but a special camera and sony has an ice cream cone wand so people can flail around and jump all over the place.

    Are they serious?

The first ever HD Nintendo console... as the successor of the DS...

    Why??

First off, with a screen that small you're hardly going to notice the difference.

Second, they're going to have to serisously bump up the GPU power on the little critter, not even the original DS has graphics on par with the Playstation 1, for you tech-heads the DS barely scrapes 700Kbytes of Video Memory.

Third of all, game sizes are going to be increased if they're going to go with the supposed "HD DS", which could cause some problems because the higher the game size, the slower the game will boot.

Very serious GT-RRR, This is the DS2 not another revision of the DS. The screen could be larger up up to PSP size. Judging by HD video on the PSP it is possible to get better out of these screens.

It is said Nintendo is going with Nvidia using a tegra GPU, Looking at the specs for the 600mhz model it can handle HD video and well as HDMI/TV-Out and fairly high resolutions (for a handheld) the Zune is using the model above that.

Iwata is meant to have said "[It will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing." again translation and intentional interpretation (Iwata says the Wii failed anyone?), This can be achieved without going for 1080p

Nintendo handhelds have always been pickup and play devices that is Nintendo's main edge. Nintendo are unlikely to go for a 15gb mini-holographic disc that takes five minutes to load a game. Others have managed to squeeze 16gb of storage into their handhelds can run games from mainstream flash memory cards which only get cheaper and larger, why couldn't nintendo?

    Ofc that's all speculation

Umm I think your reading way too much into that...the Ipod Touch and Iphone have motion sensing (tilt and gyration) and I dont see anyone flailing away with those.

But the iPhone is just a simple Tilt, Shake and maybe Flick movements, which is perfectly fine for say the train journey or something, where-as the Wii involves mostly your whole body.

The Wii only involves your hand(s). Whether or not you move your whole body is up to how you decide to play it. You don't have to actually stand up and box with someone to play Wii Boxing. Wii Fit is the only full body accessory.
